DESCRIPTION : THIS MAP IN ITS VARIOUS EDITIONS AND STATES WAS ONE OF THE MOST PUBLISHED MAPS OF MARYLAND IN THE SECOND HALF OF THE NINETEENTH CENTURY. IT IS A MORE RECENT VERSION OF THE COLTON MAP, WHICH FIRST APPEARED IN 1855, PUBLISHED BY J.H. COLTON & Co. AND LATER BY JOHNSON & BROWNING, JOHNSON AND WARD, AND A.J. JOHNSON. PHILLIPS ATLASES DOES NOT DETAIL THE MAPS IN GRAYS ATLASES, WHICH APPEARED FROM 1873 THROUGH 1886. WE HAVE ARBITRARILY GIVEN THIS MAP AN 1873 DATE UNTIL FURTHER WORK HAS BEEN DONE, BECAUSE IT DOES NOT SHOW THE CREATION OF GARRETT COUNTY, WHICH WAS ESTABLISHED OUT OF ALLEGHANY COUNTY IN DECEMBER, 1872. SOME EARLIER VERSIONS OF THIS MAP INCLUDE THE ELECTION DISTRICTS OF THE VARIOUS COUNTIES BUT THIS GRAY'S ATLAS DOES NOT. CONSEQUENTLY, GRAY MAY HAVE ACQUIRED THE RIGHTS TO THE OLDER PLATES.

THE MAP COVERS FROM SOUTHERN PENNSYLVANIA TO NORTHERN VIRGINIA AND FROM THE ATLANTIC TO THE WESTERN MARYLAND BORDER. IT SHOWS ROADS, RAILROADS, COUNTIES AND COUNTY SEATS, CANALS, CITIES AND TOWNS AND HAS AN INSET OF WASHINGTON D.C. WITH BUILDINGS AND OTHER POINTS OF INTEREST INDICATED. NO SOUNDINGS OR OTHER HYDROGRAPHIC DATA ARE GIVEN. THE CHESAPEAKE BAY, DELAWARE BAY AND RIVER AND CLOSE OCEAN AREAS ARE DEPICTED BY SHORE-CONFORMING PARALLEL LINES.

SEVERAL OTHER STATES AND/OR EDITIONS OF THIS MAP ARE KNOWN TO THE WRITER AT THIS TIME. SEE EDITION AND STATE INFORMATION SECTION FOR MAP REFERENCES.

DATA IS FROM PHILLIPS, ATLASES, RISTOW'S AMERICAN MAPS AND MAPMAKERS AND FROM OBSERVATION OF THE COPIES IN THE HUNTINGFIELD COLLECTION.

EDITION & STATE INFO : WE HAVE IDENTIFIED SEVERAL STATES/EDITIONS OF THE MAP. A NUMBER OF OTHER EDITIONS AND/OR STATES ARE LISTED IN PHILLIPS, BUT WE HAVEN'T YET SEEN THEM.

ONE STATE - (1855?) - ENTITLED DELAWARE AND MARYLAND PUBLISHED BY J.H. COLTON & CO. No. 172 WILLIAM ST. NEW YORK, THIS MAP HAS NO SCROLLWORK OUTSIDE THE HEAVY NEAT LINE AND THE PAGE NUMBER IS "24". SEE MAP # 355C2.

ANOTHER STATE - (1855?) - HAS THE SAME TITLE AS THE PRIOR STATE BUT WITH "No. 22" AS THE PAGE NUMBER. THIS STATE HAS CIRCULAR SCROLLWORK INSTEAD OF A HEAVY NEAT LINE. SEE MAP # 355C3.

ANOTHER STATE - (1856) - THIS MAP IS SIMILAR TO THE PRIOR STATE BUT WITH "NO. 22" OMITTED. THERE WAS NO PAGE NUMBER, SINCE THIS WAS ISSUED AS A SEPARATE BETWEEN TITLED MAP BOARDS. THE DATE 1856 IS IN THE TITLE. THE MAP BOARD IS RED AND MEASURES 12.7 X 8.7 CM. THE TITLE "MAP OF DELAWARE & MARYLAND J.H. COLTON" IS IN GOLD LEAF ON THE COVER. THIS VERSION OF THE MAP IS ON THIN PAPER. A COPY IS IN THE COLLECTION OF DR. LAURENCE CLAGGETT OF EASTON, MD. SEE MAP # 356C5.

ANOTHER STATE - (1863) - THE TITLE IS "JOHNSON'S DELAWARE AND MARYLAND BY JOHNSON AND WARD." THE VIEWS CONTINUE ACROSS THE TOP, BUT THE VIEW OF HARPER'S FERRY IS GONE AND THE CAPITOL IS REPLACED BY AN INSET OF WASHINGTON D.C. THE PAGE NUMBER IS "35." A SIMILAR STATE IS BELIEVED TO HAVE BEEN RELEASED IN JOHNSON'S ILLUSTRATED FAMILY ATLAS..., NEW YORK: JOHNSON & WARD, 1862. SEE MAP # 363J5.

ANOTHER STATE - (1865?) - THIS IS ENTITLED "JOHNSON'S DELAWARE AND MARYLAND BY JOHNSON AND WARD". IT HAS A PAGE NUMBER OF "38."
