DESCRIPTION : THIS MAP IS INTERESTING IN THAT IT IS ONE OF THE FEW THAT APPEARED IN AN ATLAS DURING THE CIVIL WAR THAT ACTUALLY CONTAINS INFORMATION ON THE WAR. THE MAP COVERS THE AREA FROM PIANKATANK RIVER IN THE NORTH TO SOUTH OF THE JAMES RIVER. COUNTIES ARE SHOWN IN COLOR, WITH COUNTY COURT HOUSES NOTED. IT SHOWS THE LINES OF ADVANCE AND RETREAT FOR THE OPPOSING ARMIES AND LOCATES THE MAJOR BATTLES OF THE PENINSULAR CAMPAIGN. THOSE BATTLES ARE DATED ON THE MAP AND MARKED BY CROSSED SWORD SYMBOLS. THE ROADS AND RAILROADS OF THE AREA ARE SHOWN. BLUFFS ARE PORTRAYED BY SYMBOLS AS ARE THE MILITARY BATTERIES. BRIDGES, FERRIES, CANALS, LIGHT HOUSES, FORTS, MILITARY CAMPS AND NAVAL YARDS AND HOSPITALS ARE INDICATED. SOUNDINGS IN FEET ARE SHOWN FOR THE JAMES AND YORK RIVERS. THE SHIP CHANNEL IS GIVEN IN THE HAMPTON ROADS AREA. SEVERAL SHOALS ARE INDICATED BY DOTTED LINES. THE WATER AREAS ARE FILLED WITH SHORE-CONFORMING PARALLEL LINES.

JOHNSON'S MAP IS A SLIGHTLY CROPPED VERSION OF THE ORIGINAL MAP ENTITLED "HARE'S MAP OF THE VICINITY OF RICHMOND, AND PENINSULAR CAMPAIGN IN VIRGINIA .... NEW YORK, W. REID GOULD, 1862." THE HARE'S MAP HAD A DIFFERENT BORDER AND AN INSET OF "A GENERAL MAP OF THE SEAT OF WAR" (COVERING EASTERN VIRGINIA, MARYLAND AND NORTH CAROLINA, 17.8 X 15.2 CM., SCALE 1-2,800,000). IT WAS 50.8 X 83.8 CM. TO FIT THE MAP INTO THE JOHNSON FAMILY ATLASES, THE HARE MAP WAS CUT DOWN, A SIMPLER BORDER PUT ON AND THE MARGINS WERE MADE VERY SMALL. THE RESULT OF THE CROPPING IS SEEN IN THE BOTTOM RIGHT CORNER, WHERE THE "WA" IN SWAMP WAS DELETED, BUT STILL SHOWS THROUGH, AND A PERIOD PUT AFTER THE "S". OTHER WORDS ARE CUT OFF ON BOTH THE RIGHT AND LEFT. HOWEVER, THE 1870 STATE HAS THE CROPPED WORDS AT THE EDGE OF THE MAP NOT AS WELL DELETED AS THE 1864 STATE.

THE FIRST STATE OF THE HARE MAP WAS COPYRIGHTED ON JANUARY 22, 1863 AND THE COPYRIGHT COPY IS IN THE LIBRARY OF CONGRESS. THE "ENTERED" STATEMENT REMAINED THE SAME THROUGHOUT THE PUBLICATION SERIES, WHICH BEGAN WITH RICHARD S. FISHER'S A CHRONOLOGICAL HISTORY OF THE CIVIL WAR IN AMERICA, NEW YORK: JOHNSON AND WARD, 1863 AND CONTINUED IN JOHNSON'S FAMILY ATLAS FROM 1864 THROUGH 1885. THE 1863 EDITION DOES NOT CONTAIN THE MAP.

AS WE UNDERSTAND THE SEQUENCE OF PUBLISHERS, IN 1860 JOHNSON & BROWNING WERE SUCCESSORS TO J.H. COLTON & CO. IN 1862, JOHNSON AND WARD SUCCEEDED JOHNSON & BROWNING. IN 1866, A.J. JOHNSON TOOK OVER FROM JOHNSON AND WARD.

DATA IS PRIMARILY FROM A TELEPHONE CONVERSATION WITH DICK STEPHENSON. THE MAP IS NUMBERED 602.6 IN HIS CIVIL WAR MAPS. PHILLIPS ATLASES WAS ALSO HELPFUL.
