DESCRIPTION : THIS SKETCH OF THE CHESAPEAKE BAY AREA WAS ISSUED AS SKETCH NO. 6 TO ILLUSTRATE THE REPORT OF THE SUPERINTENDENT OF THE UNITED STATES COAST SURVEY, SHOWING THE PROGRESS OF THE SURVEY DURING THE YEAR 1869. IT GIVES THE MAJOR AND SECONDARY TRIANGULATION LINES FOR THE CHESAPEAKE BAY AND ITS RIVERS. THE SKETCH ALSO SHOWS BY DOTTED LINES THE AERIAL EXTENT OF MORE DETAILED SHEETS OF THE TOPOGRAPHY AND HYDROGRAPHY, WHICH WERE DONE IN MANUSCRIPT AND NEVER PUBLISHED OR ISSUED TO THE PUBLIC, TOGETHER WITH THEIR NUMBERS AND DATES OF EXECUTION. ASTRONOMICAL, MAGNETIC, TIDAL AND CURRENT STATIONS IN USE ARE NOTED.

DURING 1869, A SPECIAL EXAMINATION WAS MADE OF THE LIGHT HOUSES, BEACONS, AND BUOYS IN CHESAPEAKE BAY, AS A SYSTEM OF AIDS FOR NAVIGATION. WORK WAS CONTINUED ON THE SURVEY OF THE LOWER ESTUARIES OF THE CHESAPEAKE AND ON THE MAIN TRIANGULATION NEAR WASHINGTON, D.C. AND IN THAT PASSING SOUTHWARD FROM CAPE HENRY, FOR WHICH ALSO A BASE LINE WAS MEASURED NEAR NORFOLK, VIRGINIA. ALL THE BRANCHES OF THE PATAPSCO RIVER WERE SOUNDED AND THE RESULTS WERE LATER ADDED TO THE CHART ALREADY PUBLISHED. IN DECEMBER, 1868, SOUNDINGS COMMENCED IN THE LITTLE ANNEMESSEX RIVER ON THE EASTERN SHORE OF VIRGINIA AND THEY WERE COMPLETED IN APRIL, 1869. THIS PARTY THEN SOUNDED IN THE VICINITY OF SMITH'S ISLAND, FOX ISLAND AND TANGIER ISLAND. BEGINNING IN JUNE, THE SHORE-LINE OF THE POCOMOKE RIVER WAS RUN AND THAT BRANCH OF THE CHESAPEAKE WAS SOUNDED OUT BY JULY. THEN THE SAME PARTY MOVED TO ESTUARIES IMMEDIATELY NORTH OF CAPE CHARLES AND BY OCTOBER THE TOPOGRAPHY AND HYDROGRAPHY OF THAT AREA WAS COMPLETED. THE WORK DONE ESSENTIALLY COMPLETED THE CHART OF CHESAPEAKE BAY, WHICH WAS FIRST ISSUED WITHOUT REPRESENTING THE NUMEROUS SMALL BRANCHES THAT INDENT ITS SHORES. TIDAL OBSERVATIONS WERE CONTINUED AT OLD POINT COMFORT, VIRGINIA.

ADDITIONS WERE MADE TO GENERAL COAST CHART NO. IV, CAPE MAY TO CAPE HENRY AND IN POTOMAC RIVER CHART 1, ENTRANCE TO PINEY POINT AND IN CHART 2, PINEY POINT TO LOWER CEDAR POINT. WORK CONTINUED ON COAST CHART NO. 30, CHESAPEAKE ENTRANCE ON A SCALE OF 1/80,000.

APPENDIX 6 OF THE USCS ANNUAL REPORT ALSO CONTAINED A STUDY OF THE CONNECTION OF THE PRIMARY BASE LINES ON KENT ISLAND, MARYLAND AND ON CRANEY ISLAND, VIRGINIA AND ON THE ACCURACY OF THE INTERVENING PRIMARY AND SUB-PRIMARY TRIANGULATION.

DATA IS FROM THE 1869 USCS ANNUAL REPORT TO CONGRESS AND FROM OBSERVATION OF THE COPY IN THE HUNTINGFIELD COLLECTION.

EDITION & STATE INFO : INFORMAL REPORTS WERE MADE ANNUALLY BY THE SUPERINTENDENT OF THE COAST SURVEY FROM 1816 THROUGH 1850. THESE WERE PUBLISHED BY THE TREASURY DEPARTMENT AND WERE SENT TO CONGRESS. BEGINNING WITH 1851, THESE PROGRESS REPORTS BECAME MORE FORMAL. THEY WERE PRODUCED IN MUCH LARGER QUANTITY AND WERE MORE WIDELY DISTRIBUTED TO SCHOOLS AND OTHER INSTITUTIONS AND INDIVIDUALS IN ADDITION TO CONGRESS. THE U.S. COAST SURVEY BECAME THE PUBLISHER BEGINNING IN 1851. THE WIDER DISSEMINATION WAS AN ATTEMPT BY THE AGENCY TO BUILD A WIDER BASE OF SUPPORT FOR THE ACTIVITIES OF THE COAST SURVEY. BEGINNING IN 1844, THESE REPORTS DESCRIBED IN CONSIDERABLE DETAIL THE PROGRESS OF THE SURVEY INCLUDING IN SECTION III, WHICH PRIMARILY CONSISTED OF THE CHESAPEAKE BAY AND THE OCEAN FRONT OF DELAWARE, MARYLAND AND VIRGINIA. ANNUAL PROGRESS SKETCHES WERE APPENDED, SHOWING THE EXTENT OF THE TRIANGULATION, TOPOGRAPHY, HYDROGRAPHY AND OTHER WORK ACCOMPLISHED UP TO THAT TIME.

HFC OWNERSHIP DATA : THE HUNTINGFIELD COLLECTION HAS A COPY ON THIN PAPER WITH SOME BROWNING AT THE FOLDS. THE CHART IS CLOSE CROPPED IN THE LEFT MARGIN, WITH SOME LOSS OF DATA IN THE PORTION THAT EXTENDS BEYOND THE NEAT LINE. IT HAS AN ACQ. # OF C015-2U1 AND A MDHR # OF MSA SC1399-573.
