DESCRIPTION : THIS COLORED COUNTY MAP FOCUSES ON PENNSYLVANIA AND NEW JERSEY. MARYLAND AND DELAWARE ARE ALSO SHOWN, BUT ARE RELATIVELY SMALL IN SIZE. A BETTER, LARGER SCALE REPRESENTATION OF MARYLAND IS GAMBLE'S COUNTY MAP OF MARYLAND AND DELAWARE, WHICH APPEARED IN THE SAME ATLAS, S. AUGUSTUS MITCHELL JR'S NEW GENERAL ATLAS... THE MAP DESCRIBED HEREIN WAS # 21 IN THAT ATLAS AND HAS INSETS OF PHILADELPHIA AND BALTIMORE, NUMBERED 22 AND 23 RESPECTIVELY. THIS MAP IS SIMILAR TO THE ONES THAT APPEARED IN MITCHELL'S NEW GENERAL ATLAS... FROM 1860 AND CONTINUED BY THIS NAME UNTIL AROUND 1882, EXCEPT FOR THE CHANGES NOTED IN THE EDITION AND STATE SECTION. THIS MAP FIRST APPEARED IN MITCHELL'S NEW GENERAL ATLAS..., 43 MAPS, FOL., PHILADELPHIA: S.A. MITCHELL JR., 1860, AS MAP # 18, WITH THE INSET PLAN OF PHILADELPHIA AS MAP # 19 AND THE PLAN OF BALTIMORE AS MAP # 20. MITCHELL'S SON, S. AUGUSTUS MITCHELL JR. BY 1860 HAD REPLACED HIS RETIRED FATHER AS HEAD OF THEIR PUBLISHING BUSINESS, PUBLISHING MITCHELL'S NEW GENERAL ATLAS. ITS REPRODUCTION WAS BY LITHOGRAPHY AND THE COLORING WAS MANUALLY APPLIED. RISTOW INDICATES THAT EDITIONS OF THIS ATLAS WERE ISSUED ANNUALLY WITH AN INCREASE IN THE NUMBER OF MAP PLATES UNTIL 1887. MITCHELL WAS LISTED AS PUBLISHER UNTIL 1879, ALTHOUGH THE 1870 ISSUE WAS COPUBLISHED BY J. W. WILSON OF NEW YORK CITY. THE EDITIONS FROM 1880 TO 1887 WERE PUBLISHED BY BRADLEY & CO. OR WM. M. BRADLEY & BRO. OF PHILADELPHIA. THE LAST EDITION OF MITCHELL'S NEW GENERAL ATLAS WAS DATED 1893 WITH A DIFFERENT TITLE OF MITCHELL'S FAMILY ATLAS OF THE WORLD, SUBSCRIPTION EDITION.

THE MAP IS IN FULL COLOR FOR THE STATES SPECIFIED IN THE TITLE, WITH EACH COUNTY SEPARATELY COLORED. MAJOR ROADS AND CANALS ARE SHOWN. LONGITUDE IS WEST FROM GREENWICH IN THE TOP BORDER AND FROM WASHINGTON IN THE BOTTOM BORDER. WATER AREAS ARE DEPICTED BY SHORE-CONFORMING PARALLEL LINES. NO SOUNDINGS OR OTHER HYDROGRAPHIC DATA ARE INDICATED. MAJOR ROADS, RAILROADS AND CANALS ARE SHOWN. WATER AREAS ARE DEPICTED BY SHORE-CONFORMING PARALLEL LINES. NO SOUNDINGS OR HYDROGRAPHIC DATA ARE INCLUDED. THIS MAP MAY HAVE BEEN DRAWN AND ENGRAVED BY W. WILLIAMS. PHILLIPS NOTES THAT THE MAPS IN THE 1860 ATLAS WERE SO DRAWN AND ENGRAVED. KARPINSKI, HOWEVER, SAYS THAT ONLY SOME OF THEM WERE DONE BY WILLIAMS. THIS 1864 ISSUE HAD A SLIGHTLY DIFFERENT DECORATIVE BORDER THAN THE PRIOR ISSUES. BY THE TIME THE 1864 ISSUE WAS RELEASED, THE MAP HAD BECOME CROWDED AND SHOWED SIGNS OF MANY DIFFERENT ENGRAVERS WORK.

DATA IS FROM RISTOW, PHILLIPS ATLASES, FROM OBSERVATION OF THE COPIES OF THIS MAP FROM 1860-1865 FROM THE LIBRARY OF CONGRESS IN THE HUNTINGFIELD COLLECTION.
