DESCRIPTION : THIS LARGE SCALE MAP OF THE MILITARY CAMPAIGNS OF THE ARMY OF THE POTOMAC CONCENTRATES PRIMARILY ON VIRGINIA. HOWEVER, IT DOES SHOW THE STATE OF MARYLAND EAST TO THE EASTERN EDGE OF THE CHESAPEAKE AND MUCH OF THE BAY. THE MAP IS CUT INTO 24 SECTIONS AND MOUNTED ON LINEN. IT IS IN FULL COLOR, WITH COUNTY AND STATE BOUNDARIES SHADED IN DARKER RED THAN THE SURROUNDING AREA. THE SITES OF ALL THE MAJOR BATTLES UP THROUGH JUNE, 1864 ARE SHOWN IN ORANGE UNDERLINING, WITH MOST SUCH SITES HAVING A DATE OF THE CONFLICT. SEVERAL OF THE DATES APPEAR TO BE CAREFULLY PRINTED IN MANUSCRIPT OR ENGRAVED IN FREEHAND. SOME MARKED SITES HAVE NOTES SUCH AS "DISASTER OF 75th P.V. Rgt. 45 DROWNED" AND "LEES PONTOONS DESTROYED JULY 8th 1863".

ALL THE FORTS IN THE AREA ARE DRAWN IN. ROADS, RAILROADS, CITIES, TOWNS, CHURCHES, MINES, FERRY LANDINGS AND DETAILED NAMES OF MOUNTAINS ARE GIVEN. NO ROAD DISTANCES ARE SHOWN.

AS IS TRUE OF MANY CIVIL WAR "SEAT OF WAR" TYPE MAPS, THIS ONE APPEARS TO HAVE BEEN DONE WITH SOME HASTE TO RETAIN ITS CURRENCY AND CONSEQUENTLY PLACE NAMES ARE NOT ALWAYS ACCURATELY SPELLED. MANY STYLES OF PRINTING SUGGESTS THAT MORE THAN ONE ENGRAVER MAY HAVE WORKED ON THE MAP.

THE MAP IS FOLDED INTO A COVER MEASURING 22 X 26 X 1.5 cm. WITH A LABEL SIMILAR TO THE TITLE ON THE MAP, EXCEPT THAT IT INCLUDES THE INFORMATION THAT IT WAS PUBLISHED BY F. LEYPOLDT, 1323 CHESTNUT ST. PHILADELPHIA.

STEPHENSON NOTES COPIES IN THE LIBRARY OF CONGRESS WITH DATES OF 1864 AND 1865.

DATA IS FROM STEPHENSON AND FROM OBSERVATION OF THE COPY IN THE HUNTINGFIELD COLLECTION.

EDITION & STATE INFO : STEPHENSON NOTES COPIES IN THE LIBRARY OF CONGRESS WITH COPYRIGHT DATES OF 1864 AND 1865. THE COVER OF THE HUNTINGFIELD COLLECTION COPY OF THE 1864 MAP INDICATES THAT IT WAS PUBLISHED BY F. LEYPOLDT OF PHILADELPHIA. STEPHENSON LISTS H.H. LLOYD & CO. OF NEW YORK AS THE PUBLISHER OF THE 1865 RELEASE. NO DIFFERENCES IN THE MAP OTHER THAN THE COPYRIGHT DATE ARE SHOWN BY STEPHENSON EXCEPT THAT THE 1865 LIBRARY OF CONGRESS COPY IS 1 CM. NARROWER THAN THE 1864 COPY.

HFC OWNERSHIP DATA : THE HUNTINGFIELD COLLECTION HAS A BEAUTIFUL COLORED COPY IN THE ORIGINAL JACKET COVER. IT HAS AN ACQ. # OF A016-FIG AND A MDHR # OF MSA SC1399-490.
