DESCRIPTION : THIS MAP IN OUTLINE COLORING IS THE EASTERN HALF OF "MAP OF THE STATE OF VIRGINIA", COMPILED BY W. L. NICHOLSON OF THE U.S. COAST SURVEY IN 1862 (SEE MAP # 362U2), DONE ON THE SAME 1:887,040 SCALE. IT IS THOUGHT, HOWEVER, THAT THE EASTERN VIRGINIA MAP CAME FIRST BECAUSE OF THE ADDITION OF MANY PLACE NAMES IN SOUTHERN PENNSYLVANIA AND NORTHERN MARYLAND AND VIRGINIA ON THE STATE OF VIRGINIA MAP. IT SHOWS THE MAIN AREA OF FIGHTING DURING THE EARLY PART OF THE CIVIL WAR AND WAS OBVIOUSLY USED BY THE MILITARY. THE MAP HAS SIX CONCENTRIC 10 MILE CIRCLES AROUND RICHMOND. THE COMPLETE CHESAPEAKE-MARYLAND AREA IS INCLUDED, ALTHOUGH THE TOPOGRAPHIC INFORMATION IN EASTERN MARYLAND IS QUITE SKETCHY COMPARED TO THAT IN VIRGINIA. ALL THE MAJOR RAILROADS ARE SHOWN FOR BOTH STATES AND FOR SOUTHEASTERN PENNSYLVANIA. THERE IS ALSO COMPARATIVELY LITTLE TOPOGRAPHIC DETAIL IN PENNSYLVANIA VERSUS VIRGINIA.

IN THE REPORT OF THE SUPERINTENDENT OF THE COAST SURVEY SHOWING THE PROGRESS OF THE SURVEY DURING THE YEAR 1862, NICHOLSON REPORTS: "IN ADDITION TO THE PRINTING OF OUR CHARTS PROPER, A MAP REPRESENTING THE SEAT OF WAR IN VIRGINIA WAS, AT THE SUGGESTION OF THE SUPERINTENDENT, COMPILED BY MYSELF DURING THE PAST YEAR, AND PRINTED IN COLORS, PARTLY AS AN EXPERIMENT IN THAT CLASS OF WORK, AND PARTLY TO MEET THE POPULAR DEMAND FOR INFORMATION ON THE MOVEMENTS OF OUR ARMIES. THIS MAP HAS MET WITH UNEXPECTED SUCCESS, AND HAS BEEN MUCH CALLED FOR, AND COPIES QUITE FREELY DISTRIBUTED; BUT IN ORDER TO COVER THE EXPENSES OF ITS GETTING UP AND PRINTING, A NUMBER OF COPIES HAVE BEEN PLACED IN THE HANDS OF OUR SALE AGENTS, THE PROCEEDS OF WHICH HAVE MORE THAN COVERED EXPENSES; IN ALL, SOME FIVE THOUSAND FIVE HUNDRED COPLIES HAVE BEEN PRINTED, OVER TWENTY-FIVE HUNDRED SOLD, AND NEARLY THREE THOUSAND COPIES GRATUITOUSLY DISTRIBUTED." STEPHENSON NOTES SEVEN ISSUES OF THIS MAP DATED 1862, ONE IN 1863, AND ONE IN 1864 IN THE COLLECTION AT THE LIBRARY OF CONGRESS.

DATA IS FROM STEPHENSON, THE 1862 USCS ANNUAL REPORT TO CONGRESS, AND FROM OBSERVATION OF THE 1862 MAP AND THE PHOTOREPRODUCTION OF THE 1864 MAP FROM THE LIBRARY OF CONGRESS IN THE HUNTINGFIELD COLLECTION.

EDITION & STATE INFO : THIS MAP APPEARS TO BE THE EASTERN HALF OF A MAP ENTITLED "MAP OF THE STATE OF VIRGINIA", COMPILED BY W.L. NICHOLSON OF THE U.S. COAST SURVEY AND PUBLISHED BY W.H. & O.H. MORRISON. ISSUES OF THAT MAP ARE KNOWN FOR 1862 (MAP # 362U2), JULY 1863 (MAP 363U2), AUGUST 1863 (MAP 363U3). MAY 1864 (MAP 364U2), OCTOBER 1864 (MAP 364U3), AND 1865 (MAP 365U2). THE FIRST STATE OF THE "MAP OF EASTERN VIRGINIA" IS THE MAP DESCRIBED HEREIN. IT APPEARS THAT THE 1864 STATE OF THIS MAP IS TAKEN FROM THE MAY 1864 STATE OF THE "STATE OF VIRGINIA" MAP. THE PLACE NAMES ARE SIMILAR, WITH SOME ALTERATION TO ELIMINATE NAMES THAT WOULD ONLY PARTIALLY HAVE BEEN ON THE "MAP OF EASTERN VIRGINIA" AND WITH SOME RELOCATION OF RAILROAD NAMES. IT IS NOT KNOWN WHETHER THERE IS A "MAP OF EASTERN VIRGINIA" CORRESPONDING TO EACH REVISION OF THE "STATE OF VIRGINIA" MAP.

ONE STATE - (1862) - THE DATE 1862 APPEARS IN THE TITLE. RELATIVELY FEW PLACE NAMES ARE GIVEN IN SOUTHERN PENNSYLVANIA. THERE ARE NO CONCENTRIC 10 MILE CIRCLES AROUND WASHINGTON, ALTHOUGH 6 OF THEM DO APPEAR AROUND RICHMOND. THIS MAP SHOWS THE "BLAIRSVILLE BRANCH" RAILROAD, THE "DELAWARE R.R." EXTENDING TO SEAFORD, AND THE "MANASSAS GAP R.R." EXTENDING TO HARRISONBURG, VIRGINIA. THE LIBRARY OF CONGRESS # IS G3880 1862 .N54.

ANOTHER STATE - (1862) - THIS ONE IS SIMILAR TO THE PRIOR STATE EXCEPT THAT THE "DELAWARE R.R." EXTENDS NOW TO PRINCESS ANN AND THE "MANASSAS R.R." GOES TO MT. JACKSON. THE LIBRARY OF CONGRESS # IS G3880 1862 .N55.

ANOTHER STATE - (1862) - IN THIS STATE THE "BLAIRSVILLE BRANCH" RAILROAD HAS BEEN DROPPED. THE LIBRARY OF CONGRESS # IS G3880 1862 .N56.

ANOTHER STATE - (1862) - THIS STATE IS SIMILAR TO THE PRIOR ONE EXCEPT THAT "MECHANICSVILLE" HAS BEEN SUBSTITUTED FOR "COLD HARBOR". THE LIBRARY OF CONGRESS # IS G3880 1862 .N57.

ANOTHER STATE - (1862) - THIS STATE IS SIMILAR TO THE PRIOR ONE EXCEPT THAT THE LETTERING FOR "FAIR OAKS" AND "MANCHESTER" HAS BEEN CHANGED AND THE LETTERING FOR SOME RAILROADS HAS BEEN REPOSITIONED. THE "NEWC. & F. R.R." IN DELAWARE IS RELETTERED TO READ "NEWCASTLE & FRENCHTOWN R.R." THE LIBRARY OF CONGRESS # IS G3880 1862 .N58.

ANOTHER STATE - (1862) - THIS STATE IS SIMILAR TO THE PRIOR TWO STATES EXCEPT THAT THERE ARE BLUE CONCENTRIC CIRCLES AROUND WASHINGTON. THE LIBRARY OF CONGRESS # IS G3880 1862 .N59.

ANOTHER STATE - (1863) - THE TITLE IS ALTERED TO 1863 FROM 1862. "AUGUST" IS PRINTED IN BLUE IN THE BOTTOM RIGHT CORNER. THE CONCENTRIC CIRCLES AROUND RICHMOND AND THE RAILROADS ARE IN RED AND THE CIRCLES AROUND WASHINGTON AND THE WATER AREA ARE IN BLUE. THE LIBRARY OF CONGRESS # IS G3880 1863 .N5.

ANOTHER STATE - (1864) -THE TITLE IS ALTERED TO READ 1864 INSTEAD OF 1863. OTHERWISE IT APPEARS SIMILAR TO THE PRIOR STATE. THE LIBRARY OF CONGRESS # IS G3880 1864 .N5. SEE MAP # 364U5.

DATA IS PRIMARILY FROM FROM STEPHENSON, BUT ALSO FROM OBSERVATION OF THE 1862 STATE IN THE HUNTINGFIELD COLLECTION AND FROM THE LIBRARY OF CONGRESS PHOTOCOPY IN THE HUNTINGFIELD COLLECTION.

HFC OWNERSHIP DATA : THE HUNTINGFIELD COLLECTION HAS A COPY OF THE 1862 STATE WITH A LIBRARY OF CONGRESS # OF G3880 1862 .N59. IT HAS SOME TEARS IN THE FOLDS AND SOME BROWNING IN THE EASTERN QUARTER OF THE MAP. THE WATER IS COLORED BLUE AND THE CONCENTRIC CIRCLES AROUND RICHMOND AND THE RAILROAD LINES ARE IN AN ORANGE-RED COLOR. THE MAP IS ATTACHED TO A BLACK BOARD MAP CASE COVER 14.4 X 9.7 CM. WITH GOLD LETTERING ON THE FRONT COVER READING "MAP OF EASTERN VIRGINIA COMPILED IN THE OFFICE OF THE UNITED STATES COAST SURVEY. W.H. & O.H. MORRISON. WASHINGTON D.C." IN CONTEMPORARY SCRIPT ON THE INSIDE FRONT COVER IS "DR. J.A. FREEMAN 13 N.J.V. AUG 7th. 1863". IT HAS AN ACQ. # OF SW015-DFF AND A MDHR # OF MSA SC1399-539. THE COLLECTION ALSO HAS A PHOTOCOPY OF ONE OF THE 1862 COPIES IN THE LIBRARY OF CONGRESS OTHER THAN THE ONE DESCRIBED. IT HAS A MDHR # OF MSA SC1399-365 (REPRO). THE COLLECTION ALSO HAS A PHOTOCOPY OF THE 1864 STATE WITH A MDHR # OF MSA SC1399-373 (REPRO). THE LIBRARY OF CONGRESS REPRODUCTIONS ARE ON THE BASIS OF 80% OF THE ORIGINAL SIZE.
