DESCRIPTION : THIS PRELIMINARY USCS CHART COVERS THE COASTLINE FROM CAPE MAY, NEW JERSEY TO SOUTH OF CAPE HENRY, VIRGINIA. IT INCLUDES ALL THE MARYLAND AND DELAWARE OCEAN FRONT AND PART OF THE HAMPTON ROADS AREA. THERE IS LITTLE TOPOGRAPHICAL DETAIL. SOUNDINGS AND BOTTOM CONDITIONS ARE DENSELY NOTED FOR 15 NAUTICAL MILES FROM THE COAST, THEN ARE SCATTERED.

DATA IS FROM OBSERVATION OF THE COPY IN THE HUNTINGFIELD COLLECTION.

EDITION & STATE INFO : THE 1863 USCS ANNUAL REPORT INDICATES THAT THIS CHART IN PRELIMINARY FORM WAS BEING ENGRAVED IN THAT YEAR, SO THIS PRESUMABLY ALSO INDICATES THAT THIS 1862 RELEASE IS ALSO A PRINTING OF THE PRELIMINARY CHART.

HFC OWNERSHIP DATA : THE HUNTINGFIELD COLLECTION HAS A FAIR COPY ON THIN PAPER WITH SOME BROWNING AT THE FOLDS. THE INTERSECTIONS OF THE FOLDS HAVE BEEN STRENGTHENED. "14" IS STAMPED ON THE REVERSE SIDE. IT HAS AN ACQ. # OF C015-2U1 AND A MDHR # OF MSA SC1399-574.
