DESCRIPTION : THIS COLORED LITHOGRAPHIC MAP IS THE FOURTH OF FIVE IN BACON'S NEW SHILLING WAR MAP SERIES. EACH MAP IN THE SERIES IS CONSTRUCTED SO THAT IT REPRESENTS ONE-HALF OF THE AREA OF THE PRECEEDING ONE, ENLARGED TO DOUBLE THE SCALE. THE SERIES CONSISTED OF: NO. 1 - THE RAILWAY AND MILITARY MAP (SHOWING THE WHOLE COUNTRY FROM THE ATLANTIC TO PACIFIC OCEANS; NO. 2 - AMERICAN STATES, NORTH AND SOUTH (THE EASTERN HALF OF NO. 1); NO. 3 - SOUTHERN STATES (EMBRACING THE ENTIRE SEAT OF WAR); NO. 4 - THE MAP DESCRIBED HEREIN; NO. 5 - ARMY MAP OF THE POTOMAC. THE MAP DESCRIBED HEREIN COVERS FROM NORTH OF PHILADELPHIA TO THE VIRGINIA- NORTH CAROLINA LINE AND FROM THE DELAWARE BAY TO CUMBERLAND, MD. THE ENTIRE CHESAPEAKE BAY AREA IS SHOWN, DEPICTED BY SHORE-CONFORMING PARALLEL LINES. THERE ARE CONSIDERABLY MORE NAMES SHOWN IN VIRGINIA THAN IN MARYLAND OR LOWER PENNSYLVANIA.

THERE IS SOME QUESTION REGARDING THE DATE OF THIS MAP, ALTHOUGH 1862 IS NOTED IN THE TITLE DATA. THERE IS AN AD ON VERSO FOR AN 1863 COLTON STATISTICAL PUBLICATION, SO THIS PRINTING MUST HAVE OCCURRED IN THAT YEAR OR LATER. IT IS UNKNOWN WHETHER THERE IS MORE THAN ONE EDITION OF THE MAP.

DATA IS PRIMARILY FROM THE MAP CASE ADVERTISEMENT FOR THE SHILLING SERIES AND FROM OBSERVATION OF THE MAP IN THE HUNTINGFIELD COLLECTION.

EDITION & STATE INFO : IN ADDITION TO THE MAP DESCRIBED HEREIN IN THE HUNTINGFIELD COLLECTION, STEPHENSON CITES A COPY DATED 1864 IN THE LIBRARY OF CONGRESS. THE SIZE IS SHOWN AS 60 X 46 CM. AND THE SCALE AS CA. 1:804,000. "NO. 4" IS PRINTED IN THE BOTTOM MARGIN. THE LOCATION OF THE PUBLISHER IS LISTED BELOW THE TITLE AS "LONDON", RATHER THAN AS "PATERNOSTER ROW LONDON" AS IN THE 1862 ISSUE.

HFC OWNERSHIP DATA : THE HUNTINGFIELD COLLECTION HAS A POOR COLORED COPY THAT HAS NUMEROUS SEPARATIONS AND HOLES AND SOME BROWN SPOTTING. THE COLOR IS A LITTLE FADED, BUT THE IMPRESSION IS GOOD. IT HAS AN ACQ. # OF SW015-HLN AND A MDHR # OF MSA SC1399-548.
