DESCRIPTION : THIS SKETCH OF THE CHESAPEAKE BAY AREA WAS ISSUED AS SKETCH NO. 10 TO ILLUSTRATE THE REPORT OF THE SUPERINTENDENT OF THE COAST SURVEY, SHOWING THE PROGRESS OF THE SURVEY DURING THE YEAR 1861. IT GIVES THE MAJOR AND SECONDARY TRIANGULATION LINES FOR THE CHESAPEAKE BAY AND ITS RIVERS. THE SKETCH ALSO SHOWS BY DOTTED LINES THE AERIAL EXTENT OF MORE DETAILED SHEETS OF THE TOPOGRAPHY AND HYDROGRAPHY, WHICH WERE DONE IN MANUSCRIPT AND NEVER PUBLISHED OR ISSUED TO THE PUBLIC, TOGETHER WITH THEIR NUMBERS AND DATES OF EXECUTION. ASTRONOMICAL, MAGNETIC, TIDAL AND CURRENT STATIONS IN USE ARE NOTED.

THERE WERE SEVEN PARTIES AT WORK IN SECTION III DURING 1861. TWO WERE INVOLVED IN TRIANGULATION, TWO IN TOPOGRAPHY, ONE IN TOPOGRAPHICAL RECONNAISSANCE, ONE IN HYDROGRAPHY AND ONE IN TIDAL OBSERVATIONS. THE TRIANGULATION OF THE POTOMAC RIVER WAS EXTENDED UPWARDS FROM BLAKISTONE ISLAND, COMPLETING THE PRELIMINARY WORK TO THE VICINITY OF SWAN POINT. MINUTE TOPOGRAPHICAL SURVEYS WERE MADE OF THE ENVIRONS OF WASHINGTON CITY AND OF THE ADJOINING PARTS OF THE DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA, OF MONTGOMERY COUNTY, MD. AND OF FAIRFAX COUNTY, VA. THE SHORELINE OF THE POTOMAC WAS TRACED FROM PINEY POINT TO BLAKISTONE ISLAND, AND PLANE TABLE RECONNAISSANCES AND SOUNDINGS WERE MADE AT WHITE HOUSE POINT, MATHIAS POINT AND LOWER CEDAR POINT, IN ADDITION TO A GENERAL HYDROGRAPHIC RECONNAISSANCE OF THE POTOMAC BETWEEN BLAKISTONE ISLAND AND GEORGETOWN. THE SERIES OF TIDAL OBSERVATIONS UNDERTAKEN AT THE WASHINGTON NAVY YARD WAS COMPLETED AND THE CONTINUOUS SERIES AT OLD POINT COMFORT WERE KEPT UP REGULARLY.

PROGRESS WAS MADE IN THE DRAWING OF COAST CHARTS NO. 29, ATLANTIC COAST FROM ISLE OF WIGHT, DELAWARE TO CHINCOTEAGUE INLET, VIRGINIA; ALSO IN THE ENGRAVING OF THE FOLLOWING SHEETS OF THE CHESAPEAKE SERIES, VIZ: NO. 32 FROM MAGOTHY TO HUDSON RIVER, MD.; NO. 34 FROM THE POTOMAC RIVER TO POCOMOKE SOUND; NO. 35, FROM POCOMOKE SOUND TO YORK RIVER; NO. 36, FROM YORK RIVER TO THE ENTRANCE OF CHESAPEAKE BAY; AND ON THAT OF THE SHEET OF RAPPAHANNOCK RIVER FROM PUNCH BOWL TO OCCUPACIA CREEK. THE DRAWING, LITHOGRAPHY AND ENGRAVING OF THE UPPER SHEET OF PATUXENT RIVER FROM POINT JUDITH TO NOTTINGHAM; THE DRAWING AND ENGRAVING OF THE CHART OF ST. MARY'S, MARYLAND; AND THE ENGRAVING OF THE RAPPAHANNOCK SHEET FROM THE RIVER ENTRANCE TO PUNCH BOWL; OF COAST CHARTS NO. 31, CHESAPEAKE BAY FROM THE SUSQUEHANNA TO MAGOTHY RIVER; NO. 33, CHESAPEAKE BAY FROM THE HUDSON TO THE POTOMAC RIVER WERE COMPLETED AS ALSO THE PHOTOGRAPHING AND LITHOGRAPHING OF THE PRELIMINARY CHART OF JAMES RIVER.

DATA IS FROM THE 1861 USCS ANNUAL REPORT TO CONGRESS AND FROM OBSERVATION OF THE COPY IN THE HUNTINGFIELD COLLECTION.

EDITION & STATE INFO : INFORMAL REPORTS WERE MADE ANNUALLY BY THE SUPERINTENDENT OF THE COAST SURVEY FROM 1816 THROUGH 1850. THESE WERE PUBLISHED BY THE TREASURY DEPARTMENT AND WERE SENT TO CONGRESS. BEGINNING WITH 1851, THESE PROGRESS REPORTS BECAME MORE FORMAL. THEY WERE PRODUCED IN MUCH LARGER QUANTITY AND WERE MORE WIDELY DISTRIBUTED TO SCHOOLS AND OTHER INSTITUTIONS AND INDIVIDUALS IN ADDITION TO CONGRESS. THE U.S. COAST SURVEY BECAME THE PUBLISHER BEGINNING IN 1851. THE WIDER DISSEMINATION WAS AN ATTEMPT BY THE AGENCY TO BUILD A WIDER BASE OF SUPPORT FOR THE ACTIVITIES OF THE COAST SURVEY. BEGINNING IN 1844, THESE REPORTS DESCRIBED IN CONSIDERABLE DETAIL THE PROGRESS OF THE SURVEY INCLUDING IN SECTION III, WHICH PRIMARILY CONSISTED OF THE CHESAPEAKE BAY AND THE OCEAN FRONT OF DELAWARE, MARYLAND AND VIRGINIA. ANNUAL PROGRESS SKETCHES WERE APPENDED, SHOWING THE EXTENT OF THE TRIANGULATION, TOPOGRAPHY, HYDROGRAPHY AND OTHER WORK ACCOMPLISHED UP TO THAT TIME.

HFC OWNERSHIP DATA : THE HUNTINGFIELD COLLECTION HAS A COPY ON THIN PAPER WITH SOME BROWNING AT THE FOLDS. THERE IS A TEAR IN THE UPPER LEFT MARGIN, NOT EXTENDING BEYOND THE NEAT LINE. IT HAS AN ACQ. # OF C015-2U1 AND A MDHR # OF MSA SC1399-579.
