DESCRIPTION : IN ITS VARIOUS STATES AND EDITIONS, THIS IS ONE OF THE MOST WIDELY PUBLISHED MAPS OF MARYLAND IN THE SECOND HALF OF THE NINETEENTH CENTURY. IT IS A LATER STATE OF THE MAP, WHICH FIRST APPEARED IN 1855, PUBLISHED BY J.H. COLTON & Co. AND LATER BY JOHNSON & BROWNING, JOHNSON AND WARD, A.J. JOHNSON AND O.W. GRAY. THE MAP COVERS ONLY THE STATES OF DELAWARE AND MARYLAND, WITH SURROUNDING AREAS FILLED IN WITH INSET PICTURES. OTHER THAN ADDED AND CHANGED INSETS, THIS MAP APPEARS SIMILAR TO THE COLTON MAPS OF 1855 (SEE MAPS # 355C2 AND 355C3). IT SHOWS ROADS, RAILROADS, COUNTIES AND COUNTY SEATS, CITIES AND TOWNS. NO SOUNDINGS OR OTHER HYDROGRAPHIC DATA IS SHOWN. THE CHESAPEAKE BAY AND DELAWARE BAY AND RIVER AND THE CLOSE OCEAN AREAS ARE SHOWN BY COAST CONFORMING PARALLEL LINES. THE REVERSE SIDE IS BLANK. THE MAP IS BELIEVED TO HAVE BEEN MADE BY ENGRAVING A STEEL PLATE AND THEN TRANSFERRING TO A LITHOGRAPHIC STONE FOR REPRODUCTION.

THIS MAP COULD NOT BE POSITIVELY IDENTIFIED IN PHILLIPS. JOHNSON & BROWNING SUCCEEDED J.H. COLTON & Co. IN 1860 AND MANY OF THE PLATES IN THE FAMILY ATLAS, PUBLISHED FROM 1860 TO 1885, WERE FROM COLTON'S GENERAL ATLAS. THIS PARTICULAR MAP APPEARED IN SOMEWHAT DIFFERENT FORM AT LEAST AS EARLY AS 1855. THE 1862 EDITION OF THE FAMILY ATLAS IN PHILLIPS SHOWS THAT THIS MAP HAS THE INSET OF D.C. SINCE JOHNSON AND WARD SUCCEEDED TO THE BUSINESS OF JOHNSON & BROWNING IN 1862, A c1861 DATE SEEMS REASONABLE FOR THE MAP.

DATA IS FROM PHILLIPS AND FROM OBSERVATION OF THE VARIOUS STATES OF THE MAP IN THE HUNTINGFIELD COLLECTION.

EDITION & STATE INFO : WE HAVE IDENTIFIED SEVERAL STATES/EDITIONS OF THE MAP. WE NEED PHOTOS OF THE ITEMS IN THE LIBRARY OF CONGRESS. A NUMBER OF OTHER EDITIONS AND/OR STATES ARE LISTED IN PHILLIPS, BUT WE HAVEN'T YET SEEN THEM.
