DESCRIPTION : THIS SKETCH OF THE CHESAPEAKE BAY AREA WAS ISSUED AS SKETCH NO. 8 TO ILLUSTRATE THE REPORT OF THE SUPERINTENDENT OF THE COAST SURVEY, SHOWING THE PROGRESS OF THE SURVEY DURING THE YEAR 1860. IT GIVES THE MAJOR AND SECONDARY TRIANGULATION LINES FOR THE CHESAPEAKE BAY AND ITS RIVERS. THE SKETCH ALSO SHOWS BY DOTTED LINES THE AERIAL EXTENT OF MORE DETAILED SHEETS OF THE TOPOGRAPHY AND HYDROGRAPHY, WHICH WERE DONE IN MANUSCRIPT AND NEVER PUBLISHED OR ISSUED TO THE PUBLIC, TOGETHER WITH THEIR NUMBERS AND DATES OF EXECUTION. ASTRONOMICAL, MAGNETIC, TIDAL AND CURRENT STATIONS IN USE ARE NOTED.

THE TRIANGULATION OF THE PATUXENT RIVER WAS COMPLETED; THAT OF THE POTOMAC WAS EXTENDED FROM PINEY POINT UP TO INCLUDE BRITTON'S BAY. THE STATIONS ON THE CHESAPEAKE WERE SECURED. THE TOPOGRAPHY OF THE CHESAPEAKE BAY AT THE MOUTH OF ELK RIVER WAS COMPLETED; OF THE PATUXENT TO THE HEAD OF TIDE; THAT OF ST. MARY'S WAS COMPLETED; THAT OF THE POTOMAC WAS CONTINUED WITHIN THE LIMITS OF TRIANGULATION; THAT OF THE NORTH AND WARE RIVERS IN MOBJACK BAY WERE IN PROGRESS; AND THAT ACROSS THE PENINSULA FROM CHINCOTEAGUE TO THE HEAD OF POCOMOKE SOUND WAS NEARLY COMPLETED. THE HYDROGRAPHY OF THE PATUXENT WAS COMPLETED AND THAT OF THE POTOMAC EXTENDED FROM THE ENTRANCE OF THE RIVER TO BLAKISTONE ISLAND. THE TIDAL STATIONS AT THE WASHINGTON NAVAL YARD AND AT OLD POINT COMFORT WERE KEPT UP. VIEWS OF CAPE HENRY WERE TAKEN FOR THE GENERAL COAST CHART. SPECIAL MAGNETIC OBSERVATIONS WERE MADE AT THE COAST SURVEY OFFICE IN WASHINGTON.

PROGRESS WAS MADE IN THE DRAWING AND ENGRAVING OF COAST CHART NO. 29 FROM ISLE OF WIGHT, DELAWARE TO LITTLE MACHIPONGO INLET, VIRGINIA; AND ON NOS. 31,33,35 AND 36, CHESAPEAKE BAY; IN THE ENGRAVING OF NO. 32, CHESAPEAKE BAY FROM MAGOTHY RIVER TO HUDSON RIVER, MD.; ON THE CHART OF THE RAPPAHANNOCK RIVER, AND IN THE DRAWING OF CHART NO. 30, FROM LITTLE MACHIPONGO TO GREAT MACHIPONGO INLET; ON THAT OF THE ENTRANCE TO JAMES RIVER, AND ON GENERAL COAST CHART NO. MARY'S RIVER, MARYLAND; AND THE ENGRAVING OF THE PRELIMINARY CHART OF THAT RIVER WAS CONTINUED. THE PLATE OF THE CHART OF THE YORK RIVER WAS COMPLETED AND ADDITIONS WERE MADE TO THE PROGRESS SKETCH.

DATA IS FROM THE 1860 USCS ANNUAL REPORT TO CONGRESS AND OBSERVATION OF THE COPY IN THE HUNTINGFIELD COLLECTION.

EDITION & STATE INFO : INFORMAL REPORTS WERE MADE ANNUALLY BY THE SUPERINTENDENT OF THE COAST SURVEY FROM 1816 THROUGH 1850. THESE WERE PUBLISHED BY THE TREASURY DEPARTMENT AND WERE SENT TO CONGRESS. BEGINNING WITH 1851, THESE PROGRESS REPORTS BECAME MORE FORMAL. THEY WERE PRODUCED IN MUCH LARGER QUANTITY AND WERE MORE WIDELY DISTRIBUTED TO SCHOOLS AND OTHER INSTITUTIONS AND INDIVIDUALS IN ADDITION TO CONGRESS. THE U.S. COAST SURVEY BECAME THE PUBLISHER BEGINNING IN 1851. THE WIDER DISSEMINATION WAS AN ATTEMPT BY THE AGENCY TO BUILD A WIDER BASE OF SUPPORT FOR THE ACTIVITIES OF THE COAST SURVEY. BEGINNING IN 1844, THESE REPORTS DESCRIBED IN CONSIDERABLE DETAIL THE PROGRESS OF THE SURVEY INCLUDING IN SECTION III, WHICH PRIMARILY CONSISTED OF THE CHESAPEAKE BAY AND THE OCEAN FRONT OF DELAWARE, MARYLAND AND VIRGINIA. ANNUAL PROGRESS SKETCHES WERE APPENDED, SHOWING THE EXTENT OF THE TRIANGULATION, TOPOGRAPHY, HYDROGRAPHY AND OTHER WORK ACCOMPLISHED UP TO THAT TIME.

HFC OWNERSHIP DATA : THE HUNTINGFIELD COLLECTION HAS A POOR COPY ON THIN PAPER. THE CHART IS SEPARATED AT THE TOP AND LEFT FOLD WITH LOSS OF DATA. THE SEPARATIONS ARE INEXPERTLY REPAIRED WITH TAPE AND MOLD HAS FORMED UNDER THE TAPE IN PLACES. IT HAS AN ACQ. # OF C015-2U1 AND A MDHR # OF MSA SC1399-583.
