DESCRIPTION : THIS MAP WAS FIRST INCLUDED IN MITCHELL'S NEW GENERAL ATLAS, CONTAINING MAPS OF THE VARIOUS COUNTRIES OF THE WORLD, PLANS OF CITIES, ETC..., FOLIO, PHILADELPHIA: S.A. MITCHELL, JR., 1860 AS MAP # 22. PHILLIPS INDICATES THAT THE MAPS FOR THIS ATLAS WERE DRAWN AND ENGRAVED BY W. WILLIAMS. S. AUGUSTUS MITCHELL RETIRED FROM THE DIRECTION OF HIS PUBLISHING BUSINESS BY 1860 AND HIS SON MITCHELL JR. ASSUMED THE LEADERSHIP. THE MITCHELL'S NEW GENERAL ATLAS WAS PUBLISHED IN 1860 TO REPLACE THE NEW UNIVERSAL ATLAS. THE MAPS IN THE NEW GENERAL ATLAS ALL HAVE DECORATIVE BORDERS AND THEIR REPRODUCTION WAS BY LITHOGRAPHY. ANY COLOR ON THE MAPS WAS APPLIED MANUALLY. EDITIONS OF THE NEW GENERAL ATLAS WERE ISSUED ANNUALLY TO 1887, BUT THE 1870 EDITION INCLUDES J. W. WILLSON OF NEW YORK CITY AS COPUBLISHER. THE EDITIONS FROM 1880 TO 1887 WERE PUBLISHED BY THE PHILADELPHIA FIRMS OF BRADLEY & COMPANY OR WM. M. BRADLEY & BRO. THE FINAL EDITION WAS DATED 1893 AND IT WAS PUBLISHED AND RETITLED MITCHELL'S FAMILY ATLAS OF THE WORLD, SUBSCRIPTION EDITION BY THE PHILADELPHIA FIRM OF A.R. KELLER COMPANY.
