DESCRIPTION : THIS VERY DETAILED PRELIMINARY CHART IS # 5 OF A 6 SHEET SERIES COVERING THE ENTIRE BAY. THIS SERIES REPRESENTS THE MOST COMPLETE CHARTING OF THE BAY IN TERMS OF HYDROGRAPHY AND TOPOGRAPHY DONE UP TO THE TIME OF ITS COMPLETION AND IS BASED ON EXTENSIVE TRIANGULATION OF THE WHOLE AREA, WHICH HAD NOT BEEN DONE BEFORE. IT GIVES TOPOGRAPHICAL DATA ON THE NECKS AND COASTAL LANDS ADJACENT TO THE CHESAPEAKE BAY FROM POCOMOKE SOUND IN THE NORTH TO THE MOUTH OF THE YORK RIVER. IT SHOWS LOCATION OF HOUSES AND BUILDINGS, TYPE TERRAIN, DIRECTION IN WHICH CROPS ARE PLANTED, FARM ROADS, RAILROADS, ETC. HYDROGRAPHIC INFORMATION INCLUDES SOUNDINGS IN FEET UP TO 18, THEN IN FATHOMS. IT HAS VERY WIDESPREAD INDICATIONS OF THE CONDITION OF THE BOTTOM AND HAS SHOALS MARKED BY DOTTED LINES. BUOYS AND CHANNEL COURSES ARE DRAWN. IN SHORT, THIS CHART SUMMARIZES THE VERY BEST DATA AVAILABLE FROM THE ONGOING COAST SURVEY. SEVERAL OF THE SEA AND ALL OF THE LAND AREAS ARE INCOMPLETE, WHICH SHOWS THAT THE SURVEY OF THE AREA HAD NOT BEEN FINISHED AT THE TIME OF THE PUBLICATION OF THIS SHEET. THERE ARE EXTENSIVE SAILING DIRECTIONS AND TABLES OF HYDROGRAPHIC AND OTHER INFORMATION.

THE CHART WAS CHART # 11 IN THE REPORT OF THE SUPERINTENDENT OF THE COAST SURVEY SHOWING THE PROGRESS OF THE SURVEY DURING THE YEAR 1859, WASHINGTON: U.S. HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES, 1860. THE NOAA CHART HISTORY CARDS LIST 4 EDITIONS OF THIS CHART BEFORE IT WAS REPLACED BY CHART 1223 IN 1913. THERE MUST HAVE BEEN HEAVY USE OF THE PLATES, SINCE A TOTAL OF SEVEN PLATES WERE USED.

DATA IS FROM THE USCS ANNUAL REPORT TO CONGRESS, THE NOAA CHART HISTORY CARDS AND OBSERVATION OF THE COPIES IN THE HUNTINGFIELD COLLECTION.

EDITION & STATE INFO : THE NOAA CHART HISTORY CARDS LIST 4 EDITIONS OF THIS CHART # 132 BEFORE IT WAS REPLACED BY CHART # 1223 AROUND JUNE, 1913, WHEN A PHOTOLITH WAS MADE.

ED. 1 - PRELIMINARY ED. - STATE 1 - (1859) - THIS IS THE CHART DESCRIBED HEREIN. IT WAS PUBLISHED AS CHART # 11 OF THE USCS ANNUAL REPORT TO CONGRESS FOR 1959 TO SHOW THE SURVEY'S PROGRESS. IT WAS PRELIMINARY IN THAT NEITHER THE TOPOGRAPHY NOR HYDROGRAPHY WERE COMPLETE AT THE TIME OF ITS PUBLICATION. THE PLATE NUMBER WAS 707.

- ANOTHER STATE - (1859) - THE HUNTINGFIELD COLLECTION HAS A PHOTOREPRODUCTION OF THE LIBRARY OF CONGRESS COPY OF THIS CHART, WHICH HAS THE SAILING DIRECTIONS BLOCK OF DATA AND TABLES IN THE TOP RIGHT CORNER AND HAS MORE OF THE TOPOGRAPHICAL DATA NORTH OF THE RAPPAHANNOCK RIVER FILLED IN. IT IS OBVIOUSLY A LATER, BUT STILL INCOMPLETE STATE.

ED. 2 - (1862) - TWO PLATES WERE USED DURING THE LIFE OF THIS EDITION, # 837 AND # 982.

ED. 3 - (1872) - THE DATA WAS REVISED AND UPDATED AND RELEASED ON PLATE # 717.

ED. 4 - STATE 1 -(1877) - THE DATA WAS REVISED AND UPDATED AND RELEASED ON PLATE 1211. THE TITLE READS "COAST CHART NO. 32 CHESAPEAKE BAY SHEET NO. 2 RAPPAHANNOCK ENTRANCE MOBJACK BAY CHERRYSTONE INLET." THE DATE 1863 IS IN THE TITLE. "ISSUED AUGUST 1877 CARLILE P. PATTERSON SUPERINTENDENT" (RIGHT OF TITLE DATA). DATE IS SHOWN IN THE BOTTOM MARGIN. IN THE CENTER TOP MARGIN IS "PLATE No. 1211". SAILING DIRECTIONS ARE IN THE TOP RIGHT CORNER. THE UNITED STATES COAST SURVEY SYMBOL IS ABOVE THE TITLE. SEE CHART # 377U6.

- LATER STATE - (1877) - TWO ADDITIONAL PLATES WERE USED SOMETIME AFTER 1886 BEFORE THE CHART WAS SUPERSEDED, PLATES # 1854 AND # 2840, IN 1913. THE COPY IN THE HUNTINGFIELD COLLECTION IS FROM PLATE # 2840. "COAST CHART NO. 32" IS DELETED FROM THE TITLE AND THE USCS SYMBOL IS REPLACED BY THE CIRCULAR SYMBOL OF THE DEPARTMENT OF COMMERCE AND LABOR. THE SAILING DIRECTIONS IN THE TOP RIGHT CORNER ARE DELETED. TO THE RIGHT OF THE TITLE DATA IT READS "PUBLISHED AT WASHINGTON, D.C. AUG. 1877; REISSUED MAY 1905 BY THE COAST AND GEODETIC SURVEY O.H. TITTMANN, SUPERINTENDENT. THE DATES FOR THE TOPOGRAPHY ARE NOW BETWEEN 1850 AND 1908 AND FOR THE HYDROGRAPHY BETWEEN 1851 AND 1906. "CORRECTIONS FROM SURVEYS BY CORPS. OF ENGRS, U.S.A. TO APRIL 1908." IS ADDED ABOVE THE SCALES. "PLATE No. 2840" IS IN THE CENTER TOP MARGIN. "11 DEC. 12 FEB" IS IN THE LEFT BOTTOM MARGIN. "(CHESAPEAKE BAY, YORK RIVER TO POKOMOKE SOUND) C. & G. S. 132" IS IN THE RIGHT BOTTOM MARGIN. THE WRITING IN THE PRIOR STATE IN THE BOTTOM MARGIN IS DELETED. SEVERAL NEW AIDS TO NAVIGATION ARE SHOWN IN THE CENTER OF THE BAY OFF WOLF TRAP. SEE CHART # 377U7.

CHART 132 WAS CANCELLED ON 3/14/13 AND REPLACED BY CHART # 1223, ENTITLED CHESAPEAKE BAY - WOLF TRAP TO SMITH POINT. CHART # 1223 ALSO INCLUDED DATA FROM SUPERSEDED CHART 133. THE NEW CHART WAS REISSUED IN MANY EDITIONS AT LEAST THROUGH 1977, THE LAST ENTRY ON THE CHART HISTORY CARD. ON JULY 1, 1974, THE CHART NUMBER WAS CHANGED TO # 12225 WHEN THE NATIONAL OCEAN SURVEY CONVERTED TO A NEW NUMBERING SYSTEM. THE DEC. 6, 1975 RELEASE OF THAT CHART CONTAINED LORAN "C" LINES OF POSITION FOR THE FIRST TIME.
