DESCRIPTION : MATHEWS DESCRIBES THIS WORK AS THE FIRST DETAILED GEOLOGICAL MAP OF THE ENTIRE STATE OF MARYLAND AND SAYS ITS REPRESENTATION OF THE GEOLOGICAL FORMATIONS IS BY FAR THE MOST COMPLETE ATTEMPTED UP TO THAT TIME. IT IS A MARKED IMPROVEMENT OVER ALL PREEXISTING ATTEMPTS AT SHOWING THE GEOLOGY OF THE STATE AND IS SUCH A GREAT INCREASE IN KNOWLEDGE THAT IT REMAINED THE BEST AUTHORITY ON THE TERRITORY FOR THE NEXT 30 YEARS. SUBSEQUENT GEOLOGICAL MAPS OF THE STATE HAVE UTILIZED THE MORE ACCURATE PORTIONS OF TYSON'S MAP FOR FURTHER REFINEMENT.

THE MAP IS 37 X 64.8 CM. AND USES AS A BASE A MAP COMPILED BY AUGUST FAUL. THE LITHOGRAPH WAS DONE BY A. HOEN & CO. OF BALTIMORE. IT EMPLOYS TWENTY FOUR COLORS AND PATTERNS, PRINTED FROM STONE, TO REPRESENT THE GEOLOGICAL FORMATIONS OF THE STATE. THE RIVERS AND STREAMS, WHILE CLEARLY DRAWN, ARE NOT ALWAYS TOTALLY ACCURATE. THE MAP CONTAINS THREE PROFILE INSETS SHOWING THE GEOGRAPHICAL STRUCTURE OF THE AREAS DEPICTED.

THIS MAP WAS ACTUALLY PUBLISHED IN 1860 TO ACCOMPANY THE FIRST REPORT BY TYSON, AGRICULTURAL-CHEMIST OF THE STATE OF MARYLAND. A COPY IS IN THE PEABODY IN BALTIMORE.

DATA IS FROM E.B. MATHEWS.

EDITION & STATE INFO : WRITER KNOWS OF TWO EDITIONS OF THIS MAP AND THERE ARE PROBABLY OTHERS.

1ST ED. - (1859) - THIS IS THE MAP DESCRIBED HEREIN.

ANOTHER ED. - (1873) - THIS MAP IS ENTITLED "MAP OF MARYLAND AND THE DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA, COLORED TO ILLUSTRATE THE GEOLOGICAL FORMATIONS BY PHILIP T. TYSON". IT APPEARED ON PAGES 14 AND 15 OF MARTENET, WALLING AND GRAY'S NEW TOPOGRAPHICAL ATLAS OF THE STATE OF MARYLAND AND THE DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA..., BALTIMORE: STEDMAN, BROWN, & LYON, 1873. THE BASIC TYSON DATA HAS BEEN SUPERIMPOSED ON A DIFFERENT BASE MAP. THIS MAP HAS A HEADING "EXPLANATION OF COLORS" OVER THE COLOR KEYS IN THE BLANK DELAWARE AREA. THE SCALE OF MILES BELOW THE COLOR KEYS HAS BEEN DELETED. SEE MAP # 373T5.

HFC OWNERSHIP DATA : THE HUNTINGFIELD COLLECTION HAS AN 80% OF FULL SIZE PHOTOCOPY OF THE LIBRARY OF CONGRESS COPY. THE REPRODUCTION IN THE COLLECTION IS IN BLACK AND WHITE, WHEREAS THE ORIGINAL WAS IN COLOR AND COLOR CODED TO THE GEOLOGICAL TABLE. IT HAS A MDHR # OF MSA SC1399-354 (REPRO). THE COLLECTION ALSO HAS A GOOD COLORED COPY OF THE 1873 EDITION, BOUND IN THE ATLAS, WITH AN ACQ. # OF BB023-HFNQ* AND A MDHR # OF MSA SC1399-672.
