DESCRIPTION : THIS PRELIMINARY CHART SHOWS THE UPPER REACHES OF THE YORK RIVER, CONTINUING A CHART FROM THE ENTRANCE TO THE RIVER TO KING'S CREEK DONE IN 1857 (SEE MAP # 357U9). THE TRIANGULATION AND HYDROGRAPHY APPEAR RELATIVELY COMPLETE, ALTHOUGH THE TOPOGRAPHY IS STILL SKETCHY. THIS PRELIMINARY CHART WAS USED TO ACCOMPANY THE REPORT OF THE SUPERINTENDENT OF THE COAST SURVEY SHOWING THE PROGRESS OF THE SURVEY DURING THE YEAR 1858, H.R. EXEC. DOC. NO. 33, 35TH CONGRESS, 2d SESSION, WASHINGTON: 1859 AS ILLUSTRATION No. 9.

THE ORIGINAL HAND ENGRAVED PLATE FOR THIS CHART WAS NUMBER 713. FROM THIS AN ALTO AND BASSO COPY WAS MADE AND THE BASSO WAS NUMBERED PLATE 775. PLATE 775 WAS FIRST PUBLISHED IN NOVEMBER, 1858 AND THE PLATE WAS FINISHED IN NOVEMBER, 1859. PLATE 775 WAS REISSUED WITH CHANGES AND CORRECTIONS IN AUGUST, 1877. NO OTHER EDITIONS WERE PUBLISHED. THE CHART WAS LAST SEEN IN A U.S. COAST & GEODETIC SURVEY CATALOG IN 1908.

DATA IS FROM THE NOAA CHART HISTORY CARD FOR CHART 399, FROM A TELEPHONE CONVERSATION WITH BOB HANSEN OF NOAA AND FROM OBSERVATION OF THE COPIES IN THE HUNTINGFIELD COLLECTION.

EDITION & STATE INFO : THE NOAA CHART HISTORY CARD FOR CHART 399 SHOWS THE PUBLICATION OF TWO STATES OF PLATE 775. ONE WAS IN 1858 AND ONE WAS IN AUGUST, 1877. WE LEARNED FROM BOB HANSEN OF NOAA IN A TELEPHONE CONVERSATION THAT THE ORIGINAL HAND ENGRAVED PLATE WAS NUMBER 713. AN ALTO AND A BASSO COPY WERE MADE AND THE BASSO BECAME PLATE 775. THE CHART CONTINUED TO APPEAR IN THE U.S. COAST & GEODETIC SURVEY CATALOGS THROUGH 1908, BUT NOT THEREAFTER.

ED. 1 - STATE 1 - (1858) - THIS IS THE CHART DESCRIBED HEREIN. IT WAS ON PLATE 775, WHICH WAS A BASSO COPY FROM THE ORIGINAL HAND ENGRAVED PLATE # 713.

- STATE 2 - (1877) - THIS WAS A REWORKED, REISSUED PLATE 775. WRITER HAS NOT SEEN THIS STATE, BUT PRESUMABLY IT WAS THE FINISHED STATE.

DATA IS FROM THE NOAA CHART HISTORY CARD FOR CHART 399.

HFC OWNERSHIP DATA : THE HUNTINGFIELD COLLECTION HAS FOUR COPIES OF THE 1858 PRELIMINARY EDITION. THREE ARE ON HEAVY PAPER IN GREENISH-BLUE INK. THEY HAVE EXTREMELY WIDE MARGINS. THEY WERE RECEIVED AS EXTRA COPIES FROM NOAA OF STRIKES MADE AROUND 1970 FROM THE ORIGINAL HAND ENGRAVED PLATE # 713. ALL HAVE AN ACQ. # OF NOAA012-GIFT AND MDHR #s OF MSA SC1399-688, 689, AND 690. THE FOURTH COPY IS FROM THE 1858 USCS ANNUAL REPORT TO CONGRESS. IT IS ON THIN PAPER WITH SLIGHT BROWNING AT THE FOLDS AND A SMALL HOLE AT THE FOLD INTERSECTION WITH NO LOSS OF DATA. THIS COPY IS CLOSE CROPPED ON THE LOWER LEFT SIDE, WITH LOSS OF PART OF THE LEFT NEAT LINE. IT HAS AN ACQ. # OF B014-DHH AND A MDHR # OF MSA SC1399-631.
