DESCRIPTION : THIS PRE-CIVIL WAR MAP SHOWS THE AREA FROM CENTRAL PENNSYLVANIA TO NORTHEASTERN GEORGIA AND HAS INSETS OF WASHINGTON, D.C., CHARLESTON AND BALTIMORE. THE MAP IS DIVIDED INTO COUNTIES FOR THE STATES IN THE TITLE. THE MOUNTAINS ARE SHOWN IN RELIEF. THE SCALE OF THE MAP IS TOO SMALL TO HAVE BEEN VERY USEFUL IN FOLLOWING THE WAR.

THE "ENTERED" STATEMENT INDICATES THAT IT WAS PUBLISHED BY J. H. COLTON & CO. IN 1858. WE CANNOT FIND A LISTING IN PHILLIPS THAT CONTAINS A REFERENCE TO THIS MAP AND HAVE BEEN UNABLE TO IDENTIFY ITS SOURCE. THE DECORATIVE BORDER WITH FLOWERS AND LEAVES IS COMPLETELY DIFFERENT THAN THE INTERTWINED STRAPWORK BORDER IN COLTON'S GENERAL ATLAS. J. H. COLTON & CO. PUBLISHED SCHOOL ATLASES IN 1856 AND 1859 CALLED COLTON AND FITCH'S INTRODUCTORY SCHOOL GEOGRAPHY. THE MAPS WERE DONE BY G. W. COLTON. THAT COMPANY ALSO PUBLISHED J. H. COLTON'S SCHOOL ATLAS DESIGNED TO ACCOMPANY COLTON'S AMERICAN SCHOOL GEOGRAPHY, NEW YORK: 1860. GEORGIA BARNHILL, CURATOR OF GRAPHIC ARTS FOR THE AMERICAN ANTIQUARIAN SOCIETY OF WORCESTER, MASS. ON 11/7/91 CHECKED THEIR EXTENSIVE COLLECTION OF SCHOOL GEOGRAPHIES BY COLTON AND COULD NOT FIND THE MAP. SHE CONCLUDED THAT IT WAS PROBABLY ISSUED SEPARATELY IN A SMALL BINDING, SINCE COLTON PUBLISHED MANY MAPS IN THAT FORMAT.

EDITION & STATE INFO : NO INFORMATION HAS YET BEEN FOUND.

HFC OWNERSHIP DATA : THE HUNTINGFIELD COLLECTION HAS A COPY COLORED FOR THE STATES IN THE TITLE BY COUNTIES. IT HAS AN ACQ. # OF G018-DHG AND A MDHR # OF MSA SC1399-4.
