DESCRIPTION : THIS PRELIMINARY CHART COVERS THE HAMPTON ROADS AND ELIZABETH RIVER AREAS OF VIRGINIA. IT WAS ILLUSTRATION NO. 23 IN THE REPORT OF THE SUPERINTENDENT OF THE COAST SURVEY SHOWING THE PROGRESS OF THE SURVEY DURING THE YEAR 1857. ALMOST NONE OF THE TOPOGRAPHY WAS COMPLETED FOR THIS CHART. IT WAS PROBABLY DONE BY LITHOGRAPHY. A LATER EDITION WAS PUBLISHED IN 1864.

DATA IS FROM NOAA MANUSCRIPT CHART HISTORY CARDS AND COPPERPLATE RECORDS AND FROM OBSERVATION OF THE COPIES IN THE HUNTINGFIELD COLLECTION.

EDITION & STATE INFO : IT IS LIKELY THAT THIS PRELIMINARY CHART WAS DONE BY LITHOGRAPHY, SINCE NOAA RECORDS INDICATE THAT NO COPPERPLATE NUMBER WAS ASSIGNED TO IT. AN ORIGINAL COPPERPLATE # 953 WAS COMMENCED IN SEPTEMBER, 1863 AND WAS COMPLETED IN 1864 AND AN EDITION WAS PUBLISHED CARRYING THAT DATE. A LATER STATE, CORRECTED TO APRIL 25, 1878 AND AIDS TO NAVIGATION TO JUNE 16, 1879 WAS PUBLISHED. AN ALPHA COPPERPLATE WAS MADE ON JANUARY 13, 1885 FROM PLATE 953 AND WAS GIVEN THE NUMBER 755. THE CHART WAS CANCELLED IN APRIL, 1891 AND WAS SUPERSEDED BY CHART # 400 ENTITLED "HAMPTON ROADS" ON A SCALE OF 1-20,000. THE FIRST EDITION WAS IN FEBRUARY, 1893. BY 1990 IT HAD GONE THROUGH 49 EDITIONS. ON EDITION # 38, DATED AUGUST 17, 1974, THE CHART NUMBER WAS CHANGED TO 12245, SINCE A NEW NUMBERING SYSTEM WAS ADOPTED ON JULY 1, 1974. THE 1983 NORTH AMERICAN DATUM WAS ADDED ON EDITION # 48 OF OCTOBER 14, 1989. SEE MAP # MSA SC1399-787 (484N1) FOR EDITION # 47.

DATA IS PRIMARILY FROM THE 1857 USCS ANNUAL REPORT AND NOAA MANUSCRIPT RECORDS.

HFC OWNERSHIP DATA : THE HUNTINGFIELD COLLECTION HAS A COPY ON THIN PAPER WITH SLIGHT BROWNING AT THE FOLDS. THE BOTTOM LEFT MARGIN IS CROPPED, WITHOUT LOSS OF THE NEAT LINE. THE ACQ. # IS B014-DHH AND THE MDHR # IS MSA SC1399-628.
