DESCRIPTION : THIS PRELIMINARY CHART # 392 OF THE ENTRANCE TO THE RAPPAHANNOCK RIVER IS ONE OF SIX THAT WERE ULTIMATELY DONE TO COVER THE LENGTH OF THE RIVER. THIS SHEET, ON THIN PAPER, WAS DONE BY THE U.S. COAST SURVEY TO ILLUSTRATE THE PROGRESS OF THE SURVEY AND WAS ATTACHED, AS ILLUSTRATION NO. 20 TO THE USCS ANNUAL REPORT TO CONGRESS FOR 1857. THAT REPORT HAS THIS TO SAY ABOUT THE RAPPAHANNOCK WORK FOR THAT YEAR: "THE TRIANGULATION OF CURRATOMAN RIVER [SPELLED CORROTOMAN ON THE CHART!]...WAS CARRIED BY ASSISTANT JOHN FARLEY, FROM THE MOUTH OF THE CURRATOMAN, UPWARDS TO THE STEAMBOAT WHARF AT MERRY POINT. THIS WORK CHECKS THE PRELIMINARY TRIANGULATION PREVIOUSLY EXECUTED OF THE VICINITY BY THE PLANE-TABLE PARTY OF ASSISTANT I. HULL ADAMS, ON THE BASIS OF WHICH THE SHORES OF CURRATOMAN RIVER AND CARTER'S CREEK WERE COMPLETED DURING THE SEASON." "THE PRELIMINARY TOPOGRAPHY OF THE RAPPAHANNOCK RIVER, WHICH HAS BEEN FOR SEVERAL SUCCESSIVE SEASONS IN PROGRESS BETWEEN FREDERICKSBURG AND THE ENTRANCE INTO CHESAPEAKE BAY, WAS COMPLETED DURING THE YEAR BY THE PARTY OF ASSISTANT I. HULL ADAMS." "THE WORK OF THE SEASON LIES IMMEDIATELY ADJACENT TO THE MOUTH OF CURRATOMAN RIVER..."

[THE HYDROGRAPHY OF RAPPAHANNOCK RIVER] "IN WHICH STEADY ADVANCE HAS BEEN MADE SINCE ITS COMMENCEMENT BY THE PARTY OF LIEUT. COMG. RICHARD WAINWRIGHT, U.S.N., ASSISTANT COAST SURVEY, HAS BEEN COMPLETED WITHIN THE SEASON JUST CLOSED. THE SCHOONER NAUTILUS, WITH THE HYDROGRAPHIC PARTY, REACHED HER STATION FROM THE HUDSON, ON THE 22d OF NOVEMBER, NEAR THE UPPER LIMIT OF THE TOPOGRAPHICAL SHEET LAST EXECUTED BY ASSISTANT I. HULL ADAMS IN 1856... AND THE SOUNDINGS WERE CONTINUED FROM THAT POINT DOWN THE RAPPAHANNOCK TO THE MOUTH OF URBANA CREEK, AND UP THE CHANNEL OF THAT STREAM BEYOND THE TOWN OF URBANA. A MONTH HAD BEEN SPENT IN THE WORK, WHEN FURTHER PROGRESS WAS STOPPED BY THE ICE, AND THE OPERATIONS WERE SUSPENDED UNTIL SPRING. ON THE 6TH OF MAY LIEUT. COMG. WAINWRIGHT TOOK UP THE SOUNDINGS BELOW URBANA CREEK, AND PUSHED THE SURVEY TOWARD THE ENTRANCE, FOLLOWING CLOSELY, AND KEEPING PACE, THROUGHOUT THE SEASON, WITH THE TOPOGRAPHICAL PARTY THEN AT WORK ON THE SHORES. THE SHORE LINE OF CURRATOMAN RIVER, HAVING BEEN FURNISHED BY ASSISTANT ADAMS, THAT BRANCH OF THE RAPPAHANNOCK WAS ALSO INCLUDED IN THE HYDROGRAPHY. SKETCH 20 PRESENTS IN THE FORM OF A PRELIMINARY CHART THE DETAILS OF THE WORK REFERRED TO, AND SHOWS ITS CONNECTION WITH THE HYDROGRAPHY OF CHESAPEAKE BAY." SOME 329 MILES OF SOUNDINGS WERE RUN AND 23,663 SOUNDINGS WERE TAKEN. THE SURVEY OF THE RAPPAHANNOCK WAS COMPLETED ON THE 22D OF JUNE...."

DATA IS PRIMARILY FROM THE USCS ANNUAL REPORT FOR 1857, FROM NOAA MANUSCRIPT RECORDS AND FROM OBSERVATION OF THE COPY OF THIS CHART IN THE HUNTINGFIELD COLLECTION.

EDITION & STATE INFO : THE NOAA CHART RECORDS DO NOT INDICATE A PLATE NUMBER FOR THIS PRELIMINARY EDITION, WHICH WAS PROBABLY LITHOGRAPHED FOR THE ANNUAL REPORT. THE FINAL EDITION WAS ENGRAVED ON PLATE 655. IT WAS COMMENCED IN FEBRUARY, 1858 AND WORKED ON UP TO OCTOBER, 1858. THE COPPER WAS BAD AND THE PLATE WAS CONDEMNED JUNE 13, 1871. THE PLATE WAS MISSING IN 1878 AND PROBABLY DESTROYED. AN ALPHA PLATE # 107 WAS MADE FROM PLATE 655 AND COMPLETED SEPTEMBER 29, 1863. A BASSO PLATE # 680 WAS MADE FROM PLATE 107, BUT IT WAS CONDEMNED ON NOVEMBER 10, 1864. A SECOND ALPHA PLATE # 300 WAS MADE FROM PLATE # 680 AND WAS COMPLETED ON FEBRUARY 16, 1861. A SECOND BASSO, THIS ONE # 854, FROM PLATE # 300, WAS MADE BECAUSE PLATE # 680 WAS BROKEN. THIS WAS DONE ON FEBRUARY 18, 1861 AND COPIES WERE ISSUED SUBSEQUENTLY, WITH AIDS TO NAVIGATION CORRECTED AS LATE AS 1878. THE CHART LAST APPEARED IN THE 1911 CATALOG. IT WAS REPLACED BY CHARTS # 534 AND # 535, BOTH ON A SCALE OF 1-40,000.

CHART # 534 IS ENTITLED "RAPPAHANNOCK RIVER ENTRANCE & GREAT WICOMICO RIVER. IT WAS PUBLISHED BEGINNING NOVEMBER, 1910. ITS NUMBER WAS CHANGED WITH EDITION 16 OF OCTOBER 18, 1975 TO # 12235. THE 23RD EDITION DATED DECEMBER 11, 1982 CANCELLED SMALL CRAFT CHART # 12236SC COVERING THE SAME AREA. EDITION # 25 OF SEPTEMBER 2, 1989 INCORPORATED THE 1983 NORTH AMERICAN DATUM. CHART # 535 IS ENTITLED "RAPPAHANNOCK RIVER TOLLS POINT TO MARSH POINT". ITS FIRST EDITION WAS IN MARCH, 1911. THE LIMITS OF THE CHART WERE ALTERED WITH EDITION 3 OF 1946 AND # 535 AND # 536 WERE JOINED TO FORM CHART 535-536 ON DECEMBER 12, 1954 ON A SCALE OF 1-20,000. THE DATA WAS INCORPORATED INTO CHART # 12235 (SEE ABOVE).

DATA IS FROM MANUSCRIPT NOAA CHART HISTORY AND COPPERPLATE RECORDS.

HFC OWNERSHIP DATA : THE HUNTINGFIELD COLLECTION HAS A COPY OF THIS PRELIMINARY CHART ON THIN PAPER WITH BROWNING AND SOME SEPARATION AT THE FOLDS, BUT WITHOUT LOSS OF DATA. IT HAS AN ACQ. # OF C015-2U1 AND A MDHR # OF MSA SC1399-587. THE COLLECTION ALSO HAS A COPY OF A SECOND SHEET OF THIS CHART"....FROM OCCUPACIA CREEK TO DEEP CREEK...." ON THIN PAPER WITH AN ACQ. # OF B014-DHH AND A MDHR # OF MSA SC1399-632.
