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

A SECOND EDITION WAS PUBLISHED IN 1859, APPARENTLY BECAUSE A NEW CHANNEL WAS BEING EXCAVATED IN THE PATAPSCO. THE SAILING DIRECTIONS WERE REVISED, INFORMATION ON THE NEW CHANNEL APPENDED, THE VIEWS WERE LABELED, THE TOPOGRAPHY COMPLETED, AND ADDITIONAL INFORMATION ADDED. A THIRD EDITION WAS PUBLISHED IN 1870 BECAUSE A RESURVEY OF THE CHANNELS WAS DONE IN 1869 AND 1870, AND A FOURTH IN 1877 WHEN THE TITLE WAS CHANGED TO "PATAPSCO RIVER & BALTIMORE HARBOR". A NEW CHART ENTITLED "BALTIMORE HARBOR & APPROACHES", ALSO CHART 384, WAS PUBLISHED FROM MARCH, 1892 THROUGH FEBRUARY,1899 ON A LARGER SCALE OF 1/40,000. IT REPLACED THE CHART DESCRIBED HEREIN. IN APRIL, 1900, THIS CHART WAS SUPERSEDED BY CHART 549 ENTITLED "APPROACHES TO BALTIMORE HARBOR", ALSO ON A SCALE OF 1/40,000. THE CHART NUMBER WAS CHANGED ON EDITION 40 OF NOVEMBER 9, 1974 TO 12278, WHEN THE NOAA NUMBERING SYSTEM WAS CHANGED. THE NORTH AMERICAN DATUM WAS ADDED OCTOBER 20, 1990 ON EDITION 60.

DATA IS FROM THE NOAA CHART HISTORY CARD FOR CHARTS 384, 549 AND 12278, FROM THE USCS ANNUAL REPORTS TO CONGRESS AND FROM OBSERVATION OF THE COPIES IN THE HUNTINGFIELD COLLECTION.

EDITION & STATE INFO : THE NOAA CHART HISTORY CARD FOR CHART 384 SHOWS FIVE DIFFERENT PLATES WERE USED FROM 1849 THROUGH THE NOVEMBER, 1880 EDITION. WHILE THE DATE OF THE FIRST, OR PRELIMINARY EDITION IS GIVEN AS 1849, THE USCS ANNUAL REPORTS INDICATE THAT THE FIRST ACTUAL PUBLICATION WAS IN 1856. THE FIFTH EDITION INVOLVED A NAME CHANGE TO "PATAPSCO RIVER & BALTIMORE HARBOR". FROM MARCH, 1892 THROUGH FEBRUARY, 1899, THERE WERE FIVE MORE RELEASES OF CHART 384 UNDER THE NAME "BALTIMORE HARBOR & APPROACHES". THE SCALE WAS ENLARGED TO 1/40,000. CHART 384 WAS SUPERSEDED BY NUMBER 549 ENTITLED "APPROACHES TO BALTIMORE HARBOR" ON A SCALE OF 1/40,000. FREQUENT EDITIONS AND PRINTS WERE SUBSEQUENTLY RELEASED. THE NOAA CHART HISTORY CARD SHOWS 40 FROM 1900 THROUGH 1974. IN 1974, NOAA CHANGED ITS NUMBERING SYSTEM AND THE CHART NUMBER BECAME 12278 AND NUMEROUS EDITIONS OF THAT CHART FOLLOWED.

ED. 1 - (1856) - UNDER THE TITLE IS ".... PUBLISHED IN 1856 SCALE 1/60,000". NOTHING IS IN THE BOTTOM MARGIN EXCEPT THE TWO SCALES. "No.8" IS IN THE LEFT TOP MARGIN. "ELECTROTYPE COPY No. 2..." IS IN THE RIGHT TOP MARGIN. THERE IS NO "NOTE" ABOVE THE TIDES TABLE. THERE IS A SINGLE TABLE REGARDING LATITUDE, LONGITUDE AND MAGNETIC VARIATION IN THE TOP RIGHT CORNER. THE THREE SHORELINE VIEWS ARE UNTITLED. THERE IS NOTHING IN THE CENTER RIGHT, WHERE THE USCS SEAL ETC. IS LOCATED IN THE 2ND EDITION. THERE IS NO DATA ON THE NEW PATAPSCO RIVER CHANNEL EXCAVATION BEING UNDERTAKEN WHEN THE 2ND EDITION WAS PUBLISHED. THE COMPASS ROSE IS ON TOP OF THE NAVIGATION COURSE ENTERING THE PATAPSCO. THIS IS THE CHART DESCRIBED HEREIN.

ED. 2 - (1859) - THE NEW CHANNEL IN BALTIMORE HARBOR IS SHOWN BY DOTTED LINES. RANGE LIGHTS ARE ADDED. MARGINAL CHANGES ARE MADE. THE TOPOGRAPHY IS COMPLETED. THE COMPASS ROSE IS MOVED FURTHER EAST. IT IS ELECTROTYPE COPY # 5 ON PLATE 787. SEE CHART # 359U5.

ED. 3 - (1870) - UNDER THE TITLE IS "...PUBLISHED IN 1870". "NO. 9" IS IN THE LEFT TOP MARGIN. "ELECTROTYPE COPY NO. 7..." IS IN THE RIGHT TOP MARGIN. TOPOGRAPHY AND HYDROGRAPHY CREDITS ARE ALTERED. THE NOTE UNDER THE TITLE INDICATES THAT THE PATAPSCO CHANNELS WERE RESURVEYED IN 1869 AND 1870. THIS EDITION WAS ON PLATE # 1134. SEE MAP # 370U5.

ED. 4 - (1877) - AIDS TO NAVIGATION WERE CORRECTED TO 1877 AND THE CHART WAS REISSUED ON PLATE 1159. AN ADDITIONAL STATE INCORPORATING CORRECTIONS AS OF 3/12/79 WAS ISSUED. WRITER HAS NOT SEEN THIS EDITION AND DOESN'T KNOW HOW ELSE THE PLATE WAS CHANGED.

ED. 5 - (1880) - THE TITLE WAS CHANGED TO "PATAPSCO RIVER & BALTIMORE HARBOR" AND WAS ISSUED ON PLATE 1620. WRITER HAS NOT SEEN A COPY OF THIS EDITION.

DATA IS FROM THE NOAA CHART HISTORY CARD FOR CHARTS 384, 549 AND 12278 AND FROM OBSERVATIONS OF THE COPIES IN THE HUNTINGFIELD COLLECTION. ONLY THE FIRST EDITION IS NOTED IN PHILLIPS, A LIST OF MAPS OF AMERICA IN THE LIBRARY OF CONGRESS.

HFC OWNERSHIP DATA : THE HUNTINGFIELD COLLECTION HAS ONE COPY OF THE 1856 EDITION ON THIN PAPER WITH SOME BROWNING AT THE FOLDS WITH AN ACQ. # OF B016-DUG AND A MDHR # OF MSA SC1399- 508.
