DESCRIPTION : THIS EXTREMELY DETAILED SEA CHART GIVES SOUNDINGS IN FEET UP TO 18, THEN IN FATHOMS. IT HAS VERY WIDESPREAD INDICATIONS OF THE CONDITION OF THE BOTTOM AND HAS SHOALS IN FEET SHADED AND IN FATHOMS MARKED BY DOTTED LINE. BUOYS AND CHANNEL COURSES ARE DRAWN. IN SHORT, THIS CHART SUMMARIZES THE VERY BEST DATA AVAILABLE FROM THE ONGOING COAST SURVEY WORK AT THE TIME. THE SCALE OF THE INSET OF THE ENTRANCE TO THE CHESAPEAKE BAY IS TWICE AS LARGE AS THE MAIN CHART. THE MAIN CHART INCLUDES THE ATLANTIC OCEAN AREA SOME 10' OFFSHORE FROM ASSAWOMAN I. TO FALSE CAPE, SOUTH OF CAPE HENRY.

THE CHART WAS CHART # 11 IN THE REPORT OF THE SUPERINTENDENT OF THE COAST SURVEY SHOWING THE PROGRESS OF THE SURVEY DURING THE YEAR 1855., H.R. EX. DOC. NO. 6, 34TH CONGRESS, 1ST SESSION, WASHINGTON: U.S. HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES, 1856. IT WAS PROBABLY LITHOGRAPHED FOR THIS REPORT. THE PLATE OF THIS PRELIMINARY CHART WAS COMPLETED IN 1856, ACCORDING TO THE 1856 ANNUAL REPORT.

EDITION & STATE INFO : THE CHART "THE SEACOAST OF VIRGINIA AND ENTRANCE TO CHESAPEAKE BAY" WAS ORIGINALLY IN 1854 IN TWO PARTS, AN UPPER AND LOWER, ON PLATES 306 AND 351 RESPECTIVELY. IN 1855 AN ALPHA PLATE # 128 WAS MADE BY JOINING THE TWO PLATES AND ENLARGING THEM. THREE BASSO PLATES FOLLOWED, # 488 IN JUNE, 1858, # 698 IN AUGUST, 1858 AND # 1013 IN JULY, 1865. CORRECTIONS WERE MADE IN THE FIRST BASSO AFTER THE ALPHA PLATE WAS FINISHED. THE ORIGINAL PLATE WAS CONDEMNED MARCH 27, 1871.

THE INFORMATION FROM THIS CHART WAS INCORPORATED INTO "A GENERAL CHART OF DELAWARE AND CHESAPEAKE BAYS AND THE SEACOAST FROM CAPE MAY TO CAPE HENRY" IN MAY, 1882 ON A SCALE OF 1-400,000. THE TITLE WAS CHANGED WITH EDITION 3 OF JANUARY, 1892 TO "DELAWARE AND CHESAPEAKE BAYS". THE CHART WAS DECLARED OBSOLETE AFTER THE 6TH EDITION OF JULY, 1915.

THIS CHART WAS SUPERSEDED BY CHART # 78 ENTITLED " CHESAPEAKE BAY UPPER AND LOWER ON A SCALE OF 1-200,000 IN SEPTEMBER, 1912. THE NAME WAS CHANGED TO "CHESAPEAKE BAY SOUTHERN PART ON JULY 21, 1916 AND WAS RENUMBERED 12220 WITH EDITION 23 OF SEPTEMBER 14, 1974. LORAN "C" LINES OF POSITION WERE ADDED WITH THAT EDITION. EDITION 33 OF NOVEMBER 17, 1990 ADDED THE 1983 NORTH AMERICAN DATUM.

DATA IS FROM MANUSCRIPT NOAA RECORDS OF CHARTS AND COPPERPLATES.

HFC OWNERSHIP DATA : THE HUNTINGFIELD COLLECTION HAS THREE COPIES OF THIS PRELIMINARY CHART ON THIN PAPER WITH SOME BROWNING AT THE FOLDS. IT HAS AN ACQ. # OF A016-HDU AND A MDHR # OF MSA SC1399-448. THE SECOND COPY HAS AN ACQ. # OF B016-DHU AND A MDHR # OF MSA SC1399-509. THE THIRD COPY HAS AN ACQ. # OF B015-DUD AND A MDHR # OF MSA SC1399-589.
