DESCRIPTION : THIS CHROMOLITHOGRAPHED MAP GIVES AN EXTREMELY DETAILED VIEW OF THE STATE OF VIRGINIA JUST PRIOR TO THE CIVIL WAR. THE ENTIRE STATE OF MARYLAND IS SHOWN AND ALL OF THE CHESAPEAKE BAY, BUT WITHOUT THE DETAILED NAMES AND CULTURAL INFORMATION GIVEN FOR VIRGINIA. THE MARYLAND PORTION OF THE MAP, LIKE VIRGINIA AND DELAWARE, IS DIVIDED INTO COUNTIES, BUT THE COUNTIES ARE UNCOLORED, UNLIKE THE OTHER STATES. THE CHESAPEAKE BAY IS DEPICTED BY SHORE-CONFORMING PARALLEL LINES. NO HYDROGRAPHIC DATA IS SHOWN.

PHILLIPS MAPS REFERS TO AN 1848 MAP BY THIS APPROXIMATE NAME, BY CROZET, BUT IT IS SMALLER IN SIZE THAN THIS 1855 MAP. THE MAP DESCRIBED SHOWS SOME SIGNS OF REENGRAVING. THE WORD "RIV." AFTER "WYE" ON THE EASTERN SHORE IS REWORKED. "ROCK HALL", "CHESTER", "MAGOTHY RIV.", "LIGHT H.", "STONEY PT." AND "BOKIN PT." ALL APPEAR NEWLY ENGRAVED OR REWORKED, AS WELL AS MANY OTHER NAMES.

DATA IS FROM PHILLIPS AND FROM OBSERVATION OF THE MAP IN THE HUNTINGFIELD COLLECTION.

EDITION & STATE INFO : THIS HAS NOT BEEN RESEARCHED. HOWEVER, PHILLIPS, MAPS, 988, NOTES A MAP DATED 1848 ENTITLED "A MAP OF THE INTERNAL IMPROVEMENTS OF VIRGINIA. PREPARED BY C. CROZET, UNDER A RESOLUTION OF THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY, ADOPTED MARCH 15, 1848", ENGRAVED AT P.S. DUVALS LITH. ESTABLT., PHILADELPHIA: [1848]. THE MAP IS NOTED AS 19 X 32 INCHES, SUBSTANTIALLY SMALLER THAN THIS MAP. WRITER HAS NOT SEEN THE MAP AND CAN'T YET ESTABLISH WHETHER THE MAP DESCRIBED HEREIN IS A DIFFERENT EDITION OF THE 1848 MAP, OR A COMPLETELY DIFFERENT MAP.

HFC OWNERSHIP DATA : THE HUNTINGFIELD COLLECTION HAS A GOOD COLORED COPY, CUT INTO 16 SECTIONS AND PASTED ON CONTEMPORARY LINEN, BOUND IN GREEN RIBBON. THE MAP SHOWS SOME SIGNS OF FADING. IT HAS AN ACQ. # OF SW015-UIG AND A MDHR # OF MSA SC1399-567.

BIBLIGRAPHICAL REFS. : PHILLIPS, PHILIP LEE, A LIST OF MAPS OF AMERICA IN THE LIBRARY OF CONGRESS, NEW YORK: BURT FRANKLIN, UNDATED REPRINT OF A 1901 LIBRARY OF CONGRESS PUBLICATION, 988.
