DESCRIPTION : THIS SKETCH COVERS A MARINE AREA ABOUT 7 MILES BY 7 MILES FROM THE MOUTH OF THE SUSQUEHANNA RIVER AND THE NORTH EAST RIVER SOUTH TO THE ELK RIVER AT THE NORTHERN END OF THE CHESAPEAKE BAY. IT SHOWS THE PROPOSED LOCATION FOR A NAVIGATIONAL LIGHT AT FISHING OR DONOHO'S BATTERY, NORTH OF LOCUST POINT ON SPESUTIE ISLAND. IT WAS THE THIRD PUBLISHED U.S. COAST SURVEY CHART IN THE CHESAPEAKE BAY. THE CHART WAS INCLUDED IN THE REPORT OF THE SUPERINTENDENT OF THE COAST SURVEY SHOWING THE PROGRESS OF THE SURVEY DURING THE YEAR 1851. NO LONGITUDE OR LATITUDE MARKS ARE SHOWN IN THE BORDERS. DETAILED SOUNDINGS ARE IN FEET AND THE BOTTOM CONDITIONS ARE GIVEN. THE 6', 12', AND 18' SOUNDINGS ARE JOINED BY DOTTED LINES TO DEPICT THE SHOAL AREAS. THIS SKETCH WAS DONE ON PLATE # 64, WHICH WAS BEGUN AND FINISHED IN DECEMBER, 1851. IT WAS NOT SUPERSEDED BY ANY OTHER SKETCH AND NO OTHER PLATE WAS USED.

DATA IS FROM OBSERVATION OF THE COPIES IN THE HUNTINGFIELD COLLECTION.

EDITION & STATE INFO : THERE WAS ONLY A SINGLE EDITION AND STATE OF THIS SKETCH. IT WAS ON PLATE 64, WHICH WAS DONE IN DECEMBER, 1851.

HFC OWNERSHIP DATA : THE HUNTINGFIELD COLLECTION HAS AN EXCELLENT COPY ON HEAVY PAPER WITH EXTREMELY WIDE MARGINS. IT IS A STRIKE FROM THE ORIGINAL HAND ENGRAVED PLATE FOR THIS SKETCH, USCS PLATE 64. THE PLATE WAS DONE IN 1851 AND THE STRIKE FOR THE HUNTINGFIELD COPY WAS PULLED AROUND 1970. IT HAS AN ACQ. # OF NOAA012-GIFT AND A MDHR # OF MSA SC1399-696. THE COLLECTION ALSO HAS TWO BLACK AND WHITE FULL SIZE PHOTOCOPIES OF THE LIBRARY OF CONGRESS COPY, WITH A MDHR # OF MSA SC1399-330 (REPRO).
