DESCRIPTION : THIS SKETCH OF THE CHESAPEAKE BAY AREA WAS ISSUED TO ILLUSTRATE THE REPORT OF THE SUPERINTENDENT OF THE U.S. COAST SURVEY SHOWING THE PROGRESS OF THE SURVEY DURING THE YEAR ENDING OCTOBER, 1847. IT GIVES THE MAJOR AND SECONDARY TRIANGULATION LINES FOR THE BAY AND ITS RIVERS. IN FISCAL 1847, THE PRIMARY TRIANGULATION CONTINUED DOWN THE CHESAPEAKE TOWARD THE POTOMAC RIVER. VERIFICATION WORK WAS EXECUTED AT AND NEAR KENT ISLAND BASE. ASTRONOMICAL OBSERVATIONS WERE MADE AT ANNAPOLIS AND POOLE'S ISLAND. MAGNETIC OBSERVATIONS WERE MADE AT THE ENTRANCE TO THE PATAPSCO AND NEAR BALTIMORE FOR THE CHART OF BALTIMORE HARBOR AND THE PATAPSCO RIVER. THE SECONDARY TRIANGULATION OFF CAPE HENLOPEN WAS EXTENDED TO THE SOUTHWARD, ALONG THE IMMEDIATE SHORE OF THE OCEAN. FOUR TOPOGRAPHICAL PARTIES WERE ACTIVE - ONE ON THE CHESTER RIVER; ONE ON THE EASTERN SHORE OF MARYLAND, NEAR EASTERN BAY, THE WYE, ST. MICHAEL'S, AND THE CHOPTANK RIVERS; ONE NEAR EASTON BAY AND THE CHOPTANK AND ON THE WESTERN SHORE, ON THE SOUTH RIVER; AND ONE UP THE BAY IN THE SASSAFRAS RIVER, AND ON THE WESTERN SHORE FROM HERRING BAY TO THE PATUXENT.

THE HYDROGRAPHY OF THE SASSAFRAS RIVER HAD BEEN EXECUTED AND THAT OF THE CHESTER RIVER HAD BEEN COMPLETED. THE HYDROGRAPHY OF EASTERN BAY, AND ITS RIVERS, AND OF THE CHESAPEAKE FROM THE WORK OF FORMER SEASONS, NEARLY TO THE MOUTH OF THE PATUXENT WAS COMPLETED. LTHE HYDROGRAPHY OFF SHORE, SOUTH OF CAPE HENLOPEN WAS EXTENDED SOUTH OF INDIAN RIVER. THE SKETCH ALSO SHOWS THE TIDAL, ASTRONOMICAL, MAGNETIC AND CURRENT STATIONS IN USE, AND IDENTIFIES THE TOPOGRAPHICAL AND HYDROGRAPHICAL SHEETS, WHICH WERE IN MANUSCRIPT BUT NOT PUBLISHED AND ISSUED TO THE PUBLIC.

DATA IS FROM THE 1847 USCS ANNUAL REPORT TO CONGRESS AND FROM OBSERVATION OF THE COPY IN THE HUNTINGFIELD COLLECTION.

EDITION & STATE INFO : INFORMAL REPORTS WERE MADE ANNUALLY BY THE SUPERINTENDENT OF THE COAST SURVEY FROM 1816 THROUGH 1850. THESE WERE PUBLISHED BY THE TREASURY DEPARTMENT AND WERE SENT TO CONGRESS. BEGINNING WITH 1851, THESE PROGRESS REPORTS BECAME MORE FORMAL. THEY WERE PRODUCED IN MUCH LARGER QUANTITY AND WERE MORE WIDELY DISTRIBUTED TO SCHOOLS AND OTHER INSTITUTIONS AND INDIVIDUALS IN ADDITION TO CONGRESS. THE U.S. COAST SURVEY BECAME THE PUBLISHER BEGINNING IN 1851. THE WIDER DISSEMINATION WAS AN ATTEMPT BY THE AGENCY TO BUILD A WIDER BASE OF SUPPORT FOR THE ACTIVITIES OF THE COAST SURVEY. BEGINNING IN 1844, THESE REPORTS DESCRIBED IN CONSIDERABLE DETAIL THE PROGRESS OF THE SURVEY INCLUDING IN SECTION III, WHICH PRIMARILY CONSISTED OF THE CHESAPEAKE BAY AND THE OCEAN FRONT OF DELAWARE, MARYLAND AND VIRGINIA. ANNUAL PROGRESS SKETCHES WERE APPENDED, SHOWING THE EXTENT OF THE TRIANGULATION, TOPOGRAPHY, HYDROGRAPHY AND OTHER WORK ACCOMPLISHED UP TO THAT TIME.

HFC OWNERSHIP DATA : THE HUNTINGFIELD COLLECTION HAS A COPY OF THIS CHART ON THIN PAPER WITH BROWNING ON THE FOLDS, WHERE THE PAPER HAS BEEN STRENGTHENED. IT HAS AN ACQ. # OF J017- DDT AND A MDHR # OF MSA SC1399-465.
