DESCRIPTION : THIS MAP APPEARED IN THE 1847 EDITION OF S. AUGUSTUS MITCHELL'S A NEW UNIVERSAL ATLAS. IT IS A DIFFERENT STATE OF A MAP DONE ORIGINALLY BY H.S. TANNER IN 1833 WHICH WAS INCLUDED IN THE FIRST EDITION OF THE ATLAS IN 1836. IN 1845, MITCHELL ACQUIRED THE COPYRIGHT TO A NEW UNIVERSAL ATLAS FROM CAREY & HART, WHO HAD ACQUIRED IT FROM H.S. TANNER IN 1842. MITCHELL INFORMED HIS READERS IN AN 1846 ADVERTISEMENT THAT HE HAD ACQUIRED THE COPYRIGHT ON MAY 1, 1845 AND WAS RESPONSIBLE FOR THE MANUFACTURE AND SALE OF TANNER'S ATLAS. HE CLAIMED THAT THE PLATES, ORIGINALLY COSTING OVER $10,000, HAD BEEN IMPROVED AND CORRECTED AND WERE OFFERED AS THE LEAST EXPENSIVE WORK OF ITS KIND EVER PUBLISHED IN THE UNITED STATES.

THIS MAY HAVE BEEN SO BECAUSE MITCHELL'S 1846 AND SUBSEQUENT ATLAS EDITIONS APPARENTLY WERE REPRODUCED BY TRANSFERRING THE ENGRAVED IMAGES TO LITHOGRAPHIC STONES FROM WHICH THE MAPS WERE PRINTED. THIS WAS A CONSIDERABLY LESS EXPENSIVE MANUFACTURING PROCESS THAN USE OF ENGRAVED COPPER PLATES, WHICH HAD BEEN USED ON THE ATLAS PREVIOUSLY. RISTOW BELIEVES THAT THE LITHOGRAPHIC TRANSFER OF THIS AND THE OTHER MAPS WAS PROBABLY DONE IN THE PHILADELPHIA SHOP OF PETER S. DUVAL. HIS FOREMAN, FREDERICK BOURQUIN, A NATIVE OF SWITZERLAND, WAS SKILLED IN THE TRANSFER TECHNIQUE.

THIS MAP IS SIMILAR TO THE ONE IN THE SECOND 1846 EDITION OF THE ATLAS EXCEPT FOR A CHANGED BORDER, THE ADDITION OF THE DATE 1847 AFTER THE TITLE AND THE REENGRAVING OF THE COPYRIGHT IMPRINT, WHICH NOW BEGINS TO THE WEST OF THE 1oW LONGITUDE LINE. THE DATE OF 1846 IS NOT CHANGED IN THE IMPRINT. THE COPYRIGHT NAME ON THE MAP AND MOST OF THE OTHERS IN THE ATLAS IS H.N. BURROUGHS. RISTOW SAYS THAT NOTHING IS KNOWN OF THIS PERSON, BUT THAT HE WAS UNDOUBTEDLY AN EMPLOYEE OR ASSOCIATE OF MITCHELL.

DATA IS PRIMARILY FROM RISTOW'S AMERICAN MAPS AND MAPMAKERS, FROM PHILLIPS ATLASES AND FROM OBSERVATION OF THE COPIES IN THE HUNTINGFIELD COLLECTION AND THOSE IN THE LIBRARY OF CONGRESS.

EDITION & STATE INFO : THIS MAP IS KNOWN IN AT LEAST TWO EDITIONS, EACH WITH SEVERAL STATES. THERE ARE SO MANY ISSUANCES AND STATES OF THE MAP THAT IT IS CERTAIN THAT WE HAVE NOT LISTED ALL OF THEM.

ED. 1 - STATE 1 - (1833) - THIS MAP WAS IN THE FIRST FOLIO RELEASED IN 1833 OF A NEW UNIVERSAL ATLAS, PHILADELPHIA: H.S. TANNER, AS MAP # 12. IT WAS ALSO SOLD AS A SEPARATE. SEE MAP # 333T5.

- STATE 2 - (1836) - THIS STATE IS THE SAME AS THE FIRST STATE EXCEPT THAT "1836" IS SUBSTITUTED IN THE LEFT BOTTOM MARGIN IMPRINT. THE MAP WAS IN THE 1836 EDITION OF THE SAME ATLAS. SEE MAP # 336T5.

- ANOTHER STATE - (1841) - THIS IS PROBABLY A REISSUE OF STATE 2 IN A GEOGRAPHICAL, HISTORICAL AND STATISTICAL VIEW OF THE CENTRAL OR MIDDLE UNITED STATES, PHILADELPHIA: H.S. TANNER, 1841, ON PAGE 295. WRITER HAS NOT SEEN THIS ISSUE AND THEREFORE CANNOT BE SURE OF ITS DISTINGUISHING FEATURES.

- ANOTHER STATE - (1841) - THIS STATE WAS IN THE SAME ATLAS AS THE OTHER 1841 STATE, PUBLISHED BY CAREY AND HART. WHETHER THE CAREY AND HART LEGEND REPLACES THAT OF H.S. TANNER IS UNKNOWN. THIS ISSUE HAS NOT BEEN SEEN BY THE WRITER.

- ANOTHER STATE - (1842-3) - THIS STATE WAS CONTAINED IN A NEW UNIVERSAL ATLAS..., PHILADELPHIA: CAREY AND HART AS MAP # 12. THE IMPRINT READS "ENTERED...CONGRESS". "PUBLISHED BY CAREY & HART" IS IN THE BOTTOM CENTER MARGIN AND THE ENGRAVER AND PAGE NUMBER ARE UNCHANGED. SEE MAP # 342T5.

- ANOTHER STATE - (1844) - THIS STATE IS LIKE THE 1842-3 STATE EXCEPT THAT THE PAGE # IS NOW "15". IT WAS CONTAINED IN THE 1844 EDITION OF A NEW UNIVERSAL ATLAS. SEE MAP # 344T5.

- ANOTHER STATE - (1846) - PHILLIPS NOTES AN 1844 DATE IN THE INSET. IT WAS PUBLISHED IN TANNER'S A NEW UNIVERSAL ATLAS, PHILADELPHIA: S. AUGUSTUS MITCHELL. A COPY OF THIS STATE HAS NOT BEEN SEEN BY THE WRITER. SEE MAP # 346M5.

- ANOTHER STATE - (1846) - A DECORATIVE BORDER HAS BEEN ADDED. THIS MAP WAS REPRODUCED BY LITHOGRAPHY. THE MARGINAL WRITING WAS DROPPED EXCEPT FOR THE PAGE NUMBER "15". "ENTERED...1846 BY H. N. BURROUGHS..." IS PRINTED ON THE INSIDE BORDER STARTING EAST OF 1oW LONGITUDE. "PUBLISHED BY S. AUGUSTUS MITCHELL,/N.E. CORNER OF MARKET & 7TH STREETS PHILADA., 1846" IS SUBSTITUTED AFTER THE TITLE. SEE MAP # 346M6.

- ANOTHER STATE - (1847) - THE BORDER IS CHANGED TO A SPIRAL SCROLL. "ENTERED..." IS REENGRAVED TO START TO THE WEST OF 1oW LONGITUDE. THE DATE FOLLOWING THE TITLE IS CHANGED TO 1847. THE BALTIMORE INSET REMAINS. THIS IS THE MAP DESCRIBED HEREIN.

- ANOTHER STATE - (1850) - "ENTERED..." IS ELIMINATED. "PUBLISHED BY THOMAS, COWPERTHWAIT & CO./NO. 253 MARKET ST PHILADELPHIA" IS SUBSTITUTED BELOW THE TITLE. SEE MAP # 350T5.

- ANOTHER STATE - (1850) - THIS STATE HAS BEEN EXTENSIVELY RELVISED TO INCLUDE VIRGINIA DATA. A POPULATION TABLE NOW IS INSET. "PUBLISHED BY/THOMAS, COWPERTHWAIT & CO./ NO. 253 MARKET STREET PHILADELPHIA." AND A SCALE OF MILES IS BELOW THE TITLE. "ENTERED...1850 BY THOMAS, COWPERTHWAIT & CO...." HAS BEEN ADDED IN THE LEFT BOTTOM MARGIN. THE LIBRARY OF CONGRESS COPIES OF A NEW UNIVERSAL ATLAS SHOW THAT THE 1852 EDITION WAS THE FIRST TO CONTAIN THE POPULATION TABLE, RATHER THAN THE MAP OF BALTIMORE. SEE MAP # 350T6.

- ANOTHER STATE - (1853) - THIS IS SIMILAR TO THE PRIOR STATE, WITH THE POPULATION TABLE, WITH A FEW MINOR EXCEPTIONS. "1853" HAS BEEN ADDED AFTER "PHILADELPHIA" BELOW THE TITLE. "GT. OAK MANOR 1658" AND "I.U.CH. 1672" IS ADDED. "ST. JAMES" NOW READS "ST. JAMES CH. 1710" IN KENT COUNTY. SEE MAP # 353T5.

- ANOTHER STATE - (1856) - AN ELABORATE BORDER HAS NO OUTSIDE NEAT LINE IN THIS STATE. THE IMPRINT NOW READS "ENTERED...1856 BY CHARLES DESILVER...". "PUBLISHED BY/CHARLES DESILVER/..." IS BELOW THE TITLE. SEE MAP # 356D5.

ED. 2 - STATE 1 - (1846) - THE TITLE IS CHANGED TO "NEUESTE KARTE VON MARYLAND UND DELAWARE MIT SEINEN CANAELEN, STRASSEN UND ENTFERNUNGEN DER HAUPTPUNKTE 1846." THE MAP IS 30 X 37 CM. "MEYER'S- HANDATLAS" IS IN THE LEFT TOP MARGIN AND "NO. 89" IS AT THE RIGHT TOP. SEE MAP # 346M4.

- STATE 2 - (1851) - THIS STATE IS DATED 1851 AFTER THE TITLE. "MEYER'S-GROSSER ZEITUNG-ATLAS" AND "94" ARE IN THE LEFT AND RIGHT TOP MARGIN RESPECTIVELY. "CARROLL" (C.) AND "GRESHAMS HALL" IN KENT COUNTY ARE ADDED. SEE MAP # 351M5.

DATA IS FROM OBSERVATION OF THE COPIES IN THE HUNTINGFIELD COLLECTION AND FROM PHOTOCOPIES OF SOME OF THE ITEMS IN THE LIBRARY OF CONGRESS.
