DESCRIPTION : THE AMERICAN COAST PILOT, 15TH EDITION IN 1847 IN WHICH THIS MAP APPEARED, WAS BUT ONE OF 23 EDITIONS OF THIS CLASSIC MARITIME WORK, WHICH WAS FIRST PUBLISHED IN 1796 AND WAS REPUBLISHED UNTIL 1867. THIS CHART REPLACED THE ONE ENTITLED "THE BAY OF CHESAPEAKE FROM ITS ENTRANCE TO BALTIMORE", WHICH APPEARED UP THROUGH THE 1817 EDITION (SEE MAPS # 304B5 AND 309B5). IN FACT, THE FIRST EDITION TO CONTAIN ANY CHARTS WAS THE 4TH IN 1804, ACCORDING TO SABIN. NOT ALL EDITIONS BETWEEN 1804 AND 1867 HAVE BEEN EXAMINED BY THE WRITER. THE CHART WAS PREPARED BY EDMUND BLUNT, AMERICA'S MOST NOTABLE HYDROGRAPHER. HUNTINGFIELD HAS COPIES OF THE 1833, 1841 AND 1847 STATES, WHICH DIFFER ONLY INSOFAR AS THE DATES AND THE NUMBER OF THE AMERICAN COAST PILOT EDITION.

THE CHART COVERS THE AREA FROM MOB JACK BAY AT NEW PT. COMFORT IN THE NORTH TO SOUTH OF CAPE HENRY. SHOALS ARE NOTED IN DOTTED LINES. SOUNDINGS ARE IN FATHOMS EXCEPT WHEN SPECIFIED IN FEET. NO LONGITUDE OR LATITUDE MARKINGS ARE SHOWN. THE SCALE IS IN NAUTICAL MILES, WITH 6 NAUTICAL MILES EQUAL TO 4.1 CM. NO LAND FEATURES EXCEPT NAVIGATIONAL LIGHTS ARE NOTED. THE CHART MEASURES 18.4 X 21.1 CM.

DATA IS FROM OBSERVATION OF THE COPIES IN THE HUNTINGFIELD COLLECTION.

EDITION & STATE INFO : RESEARCH HAS NOT BEEN COMPLETED TO IDENTIFY ALL THE VARIOUS EDITIONS AND/OR STATES OF THIS CHART. REVIEWING THE MANY, BUT NOT COMPLETE RUN OF THE AMERICAN COAST PILOT IN THE LIBRARY OF CONGRESS, THE FIRST TIME THIS CHART APPEARED WAS IN THE 1818 EDITION. THE HUNTINGFIELD COLLECTION HAS COPIES THAT WERE IN THE 12TH (1833), 14TH (1841) AND 15TH (1847) EDITIONS. SEE MAPS # 333B3 AND 341B5). THE ONLY DIFFERENCES ARE IN THE DATE AT THE CENTER BOTTOM AND IN THE NUMBER OF THE COAST PILOT EDITION IN THE TOP MARGIN. UNDOUBTEDLY OTHER EDITIONS AND/OR STATES EXIST.

DATA IS FROM OBSERVATION OF THE COPIES IN THE HUNTINGFIELD COLLECTION.

HFC OWNERSHIP DATA : THE HUNTINGFIELD COLLECTION HAS A BLACK AND WHITE COPY ON THIN UNWATERMARKED PAPER IN GOOD CONDITION WITH AN ACQ. # OF LSS018-DNN AND A MDHR # OF MSA SC1399- 115.
