DESCRIPTION : THIS IS THE FIRST USCS CHART OF ANY PART OF THE CHESAPEAKE BAY. DRAWN ON A SCALE OF 1-60,000, THIS CHART HAS A WEALTH OF HYDROGRAPHIC AND TOPOGRAPHIC INFORMATION. VARIOUS SHADES OF STIPLING DENOTE DEPTH CHANGES AND THE 6'12' AND 18' DEPTH CONTOURS. BOTTOM CONDITIONS ARE INSERTED. COURSE DIRECTIONS ARE SHOWN FOR NAVIGATING INTO THE HARBOR AND CHANNELS ARE MARKED BY SINGLE LINES. THE DIRECTION AND STRENGTH OF EBB AND FLOW TIDES ARE SHOWN BY ARROWS. SCALES ARE IN BOTH STATUTE AND NAUTICAL MILES. MAGNETIC VARIATION, THOUGH NOT CHANGE IS SHOWN. SAILING DIRECTIONS ARE GIVEN ON THE CHART. SEVERAL OF THE FEATURES WERE SUBSEQUENTLY INCORPORATED IN LATER USCS CHARTS. HOWEVER, THE CHART IS A TRANSITION CHART, SINCE IT SHOWS FOUR VIEWS OF THE SHORELINE, WHOSE LOCATIONS ARE INDICATED ON THE CHART. THESE ARE MUCH MORE CHARACTERISTIC OF EARLY AND MIDDLE 19TH CENTURY THAN OF LATER CHARTS. THE TOPOGRAPHY INCLUDES ROADS, FIELDS, AND A SMALL STREET LAYOUT OF THE TOWN OF ANNAPOLIS. THE FIELDS ARE SHOWN IN ENOUGH DETAIL TO INDICATE THE DIRECTION THAT THE FIELDS WERE PLOWED.

THE EARLY OUTPUT OF THE USCS WAS TRULY REMARKABLE. AS THOMAS PRICE POINTS OUT: "A COMPARISON WITH ANYTHING, WHICH HAS PREVIOUSLY BEEN CALLED A CHART OF OUR COAST, MAKES THE FIRST PRODUCTS OF THE COAST SURVEY LOOK LIKE AN ENTIRELY NEW FORM OF THE ART. THE OUTSTANDING IMPROVEMENTS...[INCLUDED] UNIFORMLY HIGH ACCURACY OF GEOGRAPHICAL POSITION THROUGHOUT AND COMPLETE TOPOGRAPHY."

DATA IS FROM OBSERVATION OF THE LIBRARY OF CONGRESS COPY AND ONE IN THE HUNTINGFIELD COLLECTION AND FROM PRICE.

EDITION & STATE INFO : THE LIBRARY OF CONGRESS COPY IS BLANK IN THE TOP MARGIN AND MAY HAVE BEEN THE ORIGINAL ISSUE, WHICH WAS ON HEAVY PAPER. AN ISSUE ON THIN PAPER (DESCRIBED HEREIN) WAS INCLUDED IN THE ANNUAL REPORT OF THE USCS TO CONGRESS FOR 1846.

THE NOAA PLATE RECORDS INDICATE THAT THE ORIGINAL PLATE FOR THIS CHART WAS # 154, WHICH WAS COMMENCED FEBRUARY, 1846. AN ALTO PLATE, # 163, WAS DONE ON AUGUST 9, 1850. THE RECORDS INDICATE THAT THE CHART "COMPRISES TITLE, SEAL, NOTES, SAILING DIRECTIONS, BUOYS, LIGHT HOUSES, SAILING LINES & NAMES OF CHESAPEAKE BAY AND KENT ISLAND." THE LONGITUDE NOTE ON THE BOTTOM BORDER WAS LATER ERASED FROM THE ALTO PLATE TO MAKE BASSO #4 IN 1878.

BASSO # 1 WAS DATED AUGUST 16, 1850 AND WAS PLATE # 155. THIS PLATE WAS CONDEMNED AND THE PLATE WAS LOST. BASSO # 2 FROM THE ALTO OF 1850 WAS DATED OCTOBER 19, 1857 AND WAS PLATE # 633, DONE APPARENTLY WITHOUT CHANGE BECAUSE THE AGENCY HAD RUN OUT OF COPIES. BASSO # 3 WAS DATED JUNE 16, 1863 AND WAS PLATE # 945. ON IT THE AIDS TO NAVIGATION WERE CORRECTED TO 1874, SO PRESUMABLY THERE WERE CORRECTIONS ON THE PLATE AND SEVERAL ISSUES. BASSO # 4 WAS DATED OCTOBER 18, 1878 AND WAS PLATE # 1452. A SECOND ALTO PLATE, # 635, WAS MADE ON SEPTEMBER 22, 1880 ON WHICH THE AIDS TO NAVIGATION WERE CORRECTED TO JULY, 1879.

A TOTALLY NEW EDITION OF THE ANNAPOLIS HARBOR CHART THAT MEASURED 33 INCHES X 35 1/4 INCHES ON A SCALE OF 1-10,000 WAS DONE ON SEPTEMBER 11, 1895. IT WAS PLATE # 2434. AN ALTO ON PLATE # 1175 WAS DONE JANUARY 8, 1897 AND A BASSO WAS PUBLISHED APRIL 13, 1897 ON PLATE 2501.

THE ORIGINAL CHART OF 1846 WAS NUMBERED 385. THE NEW EDITION IN 1895 CARRIED THE SAME NUMBER. NOAA CHANGED ITS NUMBERING SYSTEM ON JULY 1, 1974 AND THE NEW NUMBER ASSIGNED EDITION 15 OF FEBRUARY 8, 1975 WAS 12283. THE NORTH AMERICAN DATUM OF 1983 WAS ADDED WITH EDITION 20 OF FEBRUARY 3, 1990.

LITHOGRAPHIC COPIES OF BASSO # 3 FROM PLATE # 945 WERE MADE FOR THE BICENTENNIAL CELEBRATION IN 1976. THAT PRINT IS IDENTIFIED BY A LARGE "BiC-29" IN THE LEFT BOTTOM MARGIN AND BY THE LEGEND IN FOUR LINES, "PUBLISHED AT WASHINGTON, D.C./ U.S. DEPARTMENT OF COMMERCE/ NATIONAL OCEANIC AND ATMOSPHERIC ADMINISTRATION/ NATIONAL OCEAN SERVICE" UNDER THE SCALES IN THE CENTER BOTTOM MARGIN. IN ADDITION, A NUMBER OF ENGRAVED PRINTS WERE MADE AND MARKETED BY NOAA FOR THE BICENTENNIAL.

HFC OWNERSHIP DATA : THE HUNTINGFIELD COLLECTION HAS A COPY ON THIN PAPER WITH SOME BROWNING AT THE FOLDS AND A PARTIAL SEPARATION ON THE BOTTOM LEFT FOLD. IT HAS AN ACQ. # OF B014-UD AND A MDHR # OF MSA SC1399-618. THE COLLECTION ALSO HAS A FULL SIZE BLACK AND WHITE PHOTOCOPY OF THE LIBRARY OF CONGRESS COPY OF THIS CHART WITH A MDHR # OF MSA SC1399-353 (REPRO). IT HAS A COPY OF BASSO # 3, WITH THE AIDS TO NAVIGATION UPDATED TO 1874 REPRINTED FOR THE BICENTENNIAL CELEBRATION IN 1976. IT HAS A MDHR # OF MSA SC1399-868. IN ADDITION, THE COLLECTION HAS GOOD COPIES OF EDITIONS 16, 19 AND 20 OF CHART 12283, WITH ACQ. #s OF NOAA010-GIFT AND MDHR #s OF MSA SC1399-928, 826 AND 929, RESPECTIVELY, AND OF EDITION 21 WITH AN ACQ. # OF NOAA008-GIFT AND A MDHR # OF MSA SC1399-965.
