INSET ENTITLED "THE CONTINUATION OF EAST FLORIDA, ON THE SAME SCALE." (TO LEFT OF INSET OF NORTH AMERICA, MEASURING 10 7/8" X 7 1/8", SCALE OF 1-1,750,000). DESCRIPTION : THIS MAP APPEARS TO BE ONE OF FOUR OR MORE SECTIONS OF A LARGER MAP, COVERING MUCH OF THE UNITED STATES. THE FULL MAP MUST BE MORE THAN 4' X 6'. THE SECTION IN THE HUNTINGFIELD COLLECTION, THE SOUTHEAST MOST OF THE MAP, IS MOUNTED ON 19TH CENTURY LINEN AND IS CUT INTO SMALLER SECTIONS APPROXIMATELY 6 1/4" X 9 1/2" TO BE FOLDED INTO THAT SIZE PACKET. ON THE REVERSE SIDE, TWO OF THE SMALL SECTIONS HAVE PAPER PASTED OVER THE LINEN GIVING ADVERTISEMENTS ON WYLD ATLASES, MAPS AND PLANS. THE ADDRESS "CHARING CROSS, LONDON, FOUR DOORS FROM TRAFALGAR SQUARE" IS GIVEN.

MARYLAND IS SHOWN IN FULL, WITH ITS MAIN ROADS, COUNTIES, CITIES AND TOWNS. SHOAL AREAS IN THE CHESAPEAKE BAY ARE DEPICTED WITH DOTTED LINES. THE MAP IS IN OUTLINE COLORING.

THE ONLY REFERENCE WE FOUND TO A J. WYLD MAP DATED 1839 IN PHILLIPS MAPS IS TO ONE MARKED "NORTH AMERICAN BOUNDARY. MAPS A & B, APPENDED TO THE REPORT OF THE BRITISH COMMISSIONERS, APPOINTED IN 1839, TO SURVEY AND EXPLORE THE TERRITORY IN DISPUTE BETWEEN THE GOVERNMENTS OF GREAT BRITAIN AND THE UNITED STATES UNDER THE SECOND ARTICLE OF THE TREATY OF 1783", 2 SHEETS, 4o, LONDON, J. WYLD (1840). HOWEVER, THIS DOES NOT APPEAR TO BE THIS MAP.

TOOLEY NOTES THAT JAMES WYLD, THE YOUNGER (1812-1887) TOOK OVER HIS FATHER'S BUSINESS IN 1836 ON HIS FATHER'S DEATH. FROM 1837 TO 1840, THE IMPRINT "GEOGRAPHER TO THE QUEEN" WAS USED BY WYLD. IN 1840, IT WAS CHANGED TO "GEOGRAPHER TO THE QUEEN AND H.R.H. PRINCE ALBERT".

DATA IS FROM TOOLEY'S DICTIONARY, PHILLIPS MAPS AND FROM OBSERVATION OF THE SECTION OF THE MAP IN THE HUNTINGFIELD COLLECTION.
