DESCRIPTION : THIS MAP FIRST APPEARED AS MAP # 26 IN BRADFORD'S AN ILLUSTRATED ATLAS, GEOGRAPHICAL, STATISTICAL, AND HISTORICAL, OF THE UNITED STATES, AND THE ADJACENT COUNTRIES, 39 MAPS, FOLIO, PHILADELPHIA: E.S. GRANT & CO. ANOTHER IMPRINT OF THE SAME ATLAS IS BOSTON, WEEKS, JORDAN & CO. THE MAP WAS LATER PUBLISHED AS MAP # 26 IN A UNIVERSAL ILLUSTRATED ATLAS, EXHIBITING A GEOGRAPHICAL, STATISTICAL AND HISTORICAL VIEW OF THE WORLD, 49 MAPS, FOLIO, BOSTON: CHARLES D. STRONG IN 1842 BY T.G. BRADFORD AND S.G. GOODRICH. THE MAP WAS APPARENTLY UNCHANGED AND IT CONTINUED TO CARRY THE 1838 DATE. IT IS POSSIBLE THAT THE MAP WAS ALSO IN A GENERAL ATLAS OF THE WORLD EDITED BY S.G. GOODRICH, BOSTON: C.D. STRONG, 1841 WITH THE IMPRINT "ENTERED... 1841 BY C.D. STRONG...", BUT ADDITIONAL RESEARCH IS NECESSARY TO CONFIRM THIS.

THE ILLUSTRATED ATLAS... WAS ONE OF THE EARLIEST ATLASES TO CONTAIN FOLIO SIZE MAPS OF BOTH MARYLAND AND BALTIMORE. THE MAPS ARE USUALLY FOUND TINTED IN SOFT PASTEL COLORS.

RISTOW WRITES AS FOLLOWS ABOUT BRADFORD: "THOMAS GAMALIEL BRADFORD (1802-1887) OF BOSTON SERVED AS AN ASSISTANT EDITOR OF THE AMERICAN ENCYCLOPEDIA BEFORE ENTERING THE FIELD OF ATLAS PUBLISHING. HIS FIRST EFFORT, PUBLISHED IN 1835...[WAS] A SMALL AND RATHER UNDISTINGUISHED VOLUME... IN 1838 BRADFORD PRODUCED A MUCH MORE ELABORATE ATLAS IN AN ENLARGED FORMAT (50 X 40 CM.) WHICH WAS PUBLISHED BY WEEKS, JORDAN & COMPANY OF BOSTON. THE TITLE, ON AN ORNATELY ENGRAVED AND HAND-COLORED TITLE PAGE IS AN ILLUSTRATED ATLAS GEOGRAPHICAL, STATISTICAL AND HISTORICAL OF THE UNITED STATES AND THE ADJACENT COUNTRIES. THE TITLE PAGE WAS ENGRAVED BY JAMES ARCHER OF BOSTON, WHO HAD PREVIOUSLY PREPARED MOST OF THE PLATES FOR JOHN H. HINTON'S HISTORY AND TOPOGRAPHY OF THE UNITED STATES, WHICH WAS PUBLISHED IN 1834. BRADFORD'S ILLUSTRATED ATLAS INCLUDES MAPS OF NORTH AMERICA, THE UNITED STATES, AND THE WEST INDIES; INDIVIDUAL MAPS OF THE STATES AND THE PROVINCES OF CANADA; AND PLANS OF THE CITIES OF WASHINGTON, D.C., NEW ORLEANS, CINCINNATI, PHILADELPHIA, NEW YORK, BOSTON, AND LOUISVILLE AND JEFFERSON, KENTUCKY. MOST OF THE MAPS WERE ENGRAVED BY G.W. BOYNTON, WHO OPERATED AN ENGRAVING COMPANY IN BOSTON DURING THE 1830S AND 1840S. THE MAPS ARE ATTRACTIVE AND LEGIBLE AND ARE PRINTED ON STRONG PAPER.

"TWO OTHER EDITIONS OF THE ATLAS, WITH EXTENSIVE DESCRIPTIVE TEXT ADDED, WERE PUBLISHED IN 1838, ONE BY WEEKS, JORDAN & COMPANY AND THE OTHER BY E. S. GRANT & COMPANY OF PHILADELPHIA. IN ADDITION TO THE HAND-COLORED ENGRAVED TITLE PAGE, BOTH OF THESE ATLASES HAVE A SECOND BLACK AND WHITE TITLE PAGE, WHICH WAS 'STEREOTYPED AND PRINTED BY FOLSOM, WELLS, AND THURSTON, PRINTERS TO HARVARD UNIVERSITY, CAMBRIDGE.' THERE ARE FORTY MAPS IN EACH EDITION. BRADFORD'S ILLUSTRATED ATLAS WAS ONE OF THE FIRST AMERICAN GENERAL ATLASES TO SUPPLEMENT THE

DATA IS FROM PHILLIPS MAPS, PHILLIPS ATLASES, KARPINSKI AND FROM OBSERVATION OF THE COPY IN THE HUNTINGFIELD COLLECTION.

EDITION & STATE INFO : ONLY ONE EDITION OF THIS MAP IS KNOWN TO EXIST. THERE IS A POSSIBILITY OF TWO STATES OF THE MAP, ALTHOUGH THE SECOND STATE IS CONJECTURAL UNTIL FURTHER RESEARCH HAS BEEN DONE. THE SECOND STATE IS BASED ON A NOTE ON PAGE 259 OF KARPINSKI THAT MAP # 22 ("MICHIGAN") ALSO APPEARED IN A GENERAL ATLAS OF THE WORLD... EDITED BY S.G. GOODRICH, BOSTON: C.D. STRONG, WITH THE IMPRINT OF THE MAP CHANGED TO "ENTERED.... 1841 BY C.D. STRONG....". IT IS LIKELY THAT THE OTHER MAPS WERE SIMILARLY ALTERED.

1ST STATE - (1838) - THIS IS THE MAP AS DESCRIBED HEREIN.

2ND STATE - (1841) - THIS STATE, IF IT EXISTS, HAS THE IMPRINT CHANGED TO "ENTERED.... 1841 BY C.D. STRONG....". IT WOULD HAVE BEEN IN A GENERAL ATLAS OF THE WORLD.... EDITED BY S.G. GOODRICH, BOSTON: C.D. STRONG (A COPY OF WHICH IS IN THE BOSTON PUBLIC LIBRARY).

DATA IS FROM PHILLIPS AND KARPINSKI.

HFC OWNERSHIP DATA : THE HUNTINGFIE;LD COLLECTION HAS A BEAUTIFUL COLORED COPY WITH WIDE MARGINS OF STATE 1. IT HAS AN ACQ. # OF BB023-DHE AND A MDHR # OF MSA SC1399-177.
