DESCRIPTION : THIS SMALL SCALE MAP SHOWS THE THREE STATES DIVIDED INTO COUNTIES. IT SHOWS CANALS AND FINISHED, CHARTERED AND PROPOSED RAILROADS. THIS MAP APPEARED IN SEVERAL PUBLICATIONS IN 1835. ONE WAS A COMPREHENSIVE ATLAS GEOGRAPHICAL, HISTORICAL & COMMERCIAL, 4o, BOSTON: AMERICAN STATIONERS' COMPANY, 1835. ANOTHER COPY OF THIS ATLAS WITH THE MAP WAS PUBLISHED IN BOSTON BY W.D. TICKNOR AND IN NEW YORK BY WILEY & LONG ETC., 1835. THESE ATLASES ALSO CONTAIN A SMALL PLAN OF BALTIMORE. THE MAP ADDITIONALLY APPEARED IN ATLAS DESIGNED TO ILLUSTRATE THE ABRIDGEMENT OF UNIVERSAL GEOGRAPHY, MODERN & ANCIENT. CHIEFLY COMPILED FROM THE ABREGE DE GEOGRAPHIE OF ADRIAN BALBI, 4o, BOSTON: W.D. TICKNOR AND NEW YORK BY FREEMAN HUNT & CO. ETC. 1835 AS MAP # 7 AND IN THE SAME ATLAS BY DE SILVER, THOMAS & CO. OF PHILADELPHIA. KARPINSKI INDICATES THAT A NEW UNIVERSAL ATLAS, BOSTON: EDWARD R. BROADERS, 1835 CONTAINED THE SAME MAPS AS THE FOREGOING BRADFORD ATLASES. HE ALSO NOTES THAT THE MICHIGAN MAP FROM THE BRADFORD ATLASES WAS IN THE AMERICAN POPULAR ATLAS...., NEW YORK: FREEMAN HUNT & CO. 1835. IT IS LIKELY THAT THE VIRGINIA, MARYLAND & DELAWARE MAP WAS ALSO INCLUDED, ALTHOUGH WRITER HAS NOT YET EXAMINED A COPY OF THIS ATLAS.

RISTOW WRITES AS FOLLOWS: "THOMAS GAMALIEL BRADFORD (1802-87) OF BOSTON SERVED AS AN ASSISTANT EDITOR OF THE AMERICAN ENCYCLOPEDIA BEFORE ENTERING THE FIELD OF ATLAS PUBLISHING. HIS FIRST EFFORT, PUBLISHED IN 1835 AND TITLED ATLAS DESIGNED TO ILLUSTRATE... IS A CONDENSED VERSION OF A FRENCH WORK BY ADRIAN BALBI. BRADFORD'S ATLAS IS A SMALL AND RATHER UNDISTINGUISHED VOLUME WITH THIRTY MAPS AND FOUR PAGES OF COMPARATIVE TABLES AND STATISTICAL CHARTS. NONE OF THE MAPS CARRIES AN ENGRAVER'S CREDIT. HALF ARE OF NORTH AMERICA AND THE UNITED STATES AND THE REMAINDER SHOW THE WORLD AND VARIOUS FOREIGN COUNTRIES.

DATA IS FROM PHILLIPS ATLASES AND KARPINSKI.

EDITION & STATE INFO : ONLY A SINGLE EDITION IS KNOWN TO THE WRITER. BOTH COPIES IN THE HUNTINGFIELD COLLECTION HAVE PAGE "36" ON THE EAST MARGIN, INDICATING THAT THEY ARE FROM THE AMERICAN STATIONERS' COMPANY PUBLISHED ATLAS. IT IS POSSIBLE THAT THIS PAGE NUMBER IS DIFFERENT IN SOME OF THE OTHER PUBLICATIONS, ALTHOUGH WRITER HAS NOT YET SEEN SUCH VARIANTS.

DATA IS FROM PHILLIPS MAPS.

HFC OWNERSHIP DATA : THE HUNTINGFIELD COLLECTION HAS TWO COPIES OF THIS MAP AS DESCRIBED. ONE IS IN FULL COLOR AND ONE IS IN OUTLINE COLOR, WITH THE COUNTIES AND STATE LINES COLORED. BOTH COPIES HAVE AN ACQ. # OF BB023-2N. THEY HAVE MDHR #s, RESPECTIVELY OF MSA SC1399-174 AND 173.
