DESCRIPTION : THIS COLORED MAP COVERS FROM CAPE COD TO NORTH CAROLINA AND INCLUDES THE EASTERN TWO-THIRDS OF MARYLAND AND ALL OF THE CHESAPEAKE BAY. THIS MAP IS SIGNIFICANT BECAUSE IT WAS INCLUDED IN VOLUME 4 OF A SIX VOLUME ATLAS, ENTITLED ATLAS UNIVERSEL DE GEOGRAPHIE, PHYSIQUE, POLITIQUE, STATISTIQUE ET MINERALOGIQUE..., BRUXELLES, 1827. THIS WAS THE FIRST TOTALLY LITHOGRAPHED ATLAS AND IT WAS DONE ON A UNIFORM SCALE FOR THE ENTIRE WORLD. THE MAP DESCRIBED HEREIN IS MAP #51 OF VOLUME 4 OUT OF 77 COLORED MAPS IN THAT VOLUME. THE LITHOGRAPHY OF THIS PARTICULAR MAP APPARENTLY WAS DONE, OR AT LEAST STARTED IN 1825 AND IT IS ATTRIBUTED TO H. OLE, ALTHOUGH VANDERMAELEN DESIGNED AND DREW THE MAP.

THE MAP SHOWS COUNTIES, COUNTY SEATS, ROADS, MINERALS AND POPULATION FIGURES.

DATA IS FROM PHILLIPS ATLASES, PERSONAL OBSERVATION OF THE HFC COPY, AND FROM BARBARA MCCORKLE OF YALE, WHO CHECKED THEIR COPY OF THE ATLAS TO MAKE SURE THE MAP WAS IDENTICAL TO THE ONE IN THEIR COPY, SINCE PHILLIPS DOES NOT LIST ALL THE MAPS BY TITLE.

EDITION & STATE INFO : NOT YET RESEARCHED. PHILLIPS, ATLASES, LISTS ONLY A SINGLE EDITION OF VANDERMAELEN'S ATLAS UNIVERSEL AND THAT WAS DATED 1827 AND PUBLISHED IN BRUSSELS.

HFC OWNERSHIP DATA : HFC HAS A GOOD COLORED COPY WITH WIDE MARGINS. IT HAS NO TEARS.

BIBLIGRAPHICAL REFS. : PHILLIPS, ATLASES, # 749.
