THE MAP FIRST APPEARED IN PART III OF A NEW AMERICAN ATLAS, FOL., PHILADELPHIA: H. S. TANNER, WHICH WAS ISSUED IN 5 PARTS OVER A PERIOD FROM 1818 TO 1823. PART III HAS A NOTICE DATED JAN. 1, 1821. THE TITLE OF THAT FIRST STATE OF THE MAP WAS "VIRGINIA, MARYLAND AND DELAWARE. 1820." ADDITIONAL ISSUES WERE IN THE SAME PUBLICATION, PUBLISHED IN PHILADELPHIA BY TANNER, VALLANCE, KEARNEY & CO. IN 1821, THE TANNER 1823 ISSUE, THE 1825 TANNER ISSUE (FROM WHICH THE MAP DESCRIBED HEREIN WAS TAKEN), THE 1833 AND THE 1839 ISSUES OF THE SAME ATLAS. THESE ISSUES HAVE NOT YET BEEN COMPARED.

RISTOW DESCRIBED THE NEW AMERICAN ATLAS "AS ONE OF THE MOST MAGNIFICENT ATLASES EVER PUBLISHED OF THE UNITED STATES. IT WAS ALSO ONE OF THE LAST AMERICAN ATLASES PUBLISHED DURING THE PERIOD IN WHICH MAPS WERE STILL ENGRAVED". THE TITLE PAGE OF THIS ATLAS WAS DESIGNED AND ENGRAVED BY JOSEPH PICKENS. RISTOW CONTINUES, "HENRY S. TANNER, YOUNGER BROTHER OF BENJAMIN TANNER, WAS BORN IN NEW YORK CITY IN 1786. HE MOVED TO PHILADELPHIA IN 1810 TO JOIN HIS OLDER BROTHER, WHO WAS AN ESTABLISHED ENGRAVER TRAINED BY PETER MAVERICK, ONE OF NEW YORK CITY'S EARLIEST ENGRAVERS. TANNER SERVED AS BENJAMIN'S APPRENTICE." HENRY ENGRAVED FOR JOHN MELISH, WHICH MAY HAVE CAUSED HIM TO BECOME INTERESTED IN MAP PUBLISHING, AN ACTIVITY HE ENTERED AROUND 1820. TANNER'S ATLASES REPRESENTED A MAJOR CONTRIBUTION TO AMERICAN ATLAS PRODUCTION IN THE FIRST HALF OF THE 19TH CENTURY. TANNER DIED IN 1856.

DATA IS FROM RISTOW, PHILLIPS ATLASES AND FROM OBSERVATION OF THE COPIES IN THE HUNTINGFIELD COLLECTION.
