DESCRIPTION : THIS IS LISTED BY COOLIE VERNER IN MCS # 45, SMITH'S VIRGINIA AND ITS DERIVATIVES, AS EDITION 2 OF THE ORIGINAL JOHN SMITH MAP. IT WAS A REENGRAVING OF THE 10TH STATE OF THE MAP (SEE MAP # 112S5) IN 1819 TO ACCOMPANY AN EDITION OF SMITH'S GENERALL HISTORIE OF VIRGINIA... THIS SAME REPRODUCTION WAS USED IN THE 1873 REPORT OF THE COMMISSIONERS ON THE BOUNDARY. THE SMITH MAP IS INCLUDED AMONG THOSE REPRODUCED WITH THE NOTE:

"SMITH'S MAP IS PRINTED FROM AN ENGRAVED COPPERPLATE, WHICH IS THE PROPERTY OF A GENTLEMAN OF THIS CITY, WHO OBTAINED IT FROM A TOWN IN PENNSYLVANIA WHEN IT WAS FOUND IN A LOT OF OLD METAL IMPORTED FROM ENGLAND. AN EXAMINATION OF IT PROVES THAT IT IS THE ONE WHICH WAS ENGRAVED FOR AND USED IN THE PUBLICATION OF THE REPRINT OF SMITH'S HISTORY... THE...MAPS WERE PRINTED... BY ORDER OF THE SENATE, BY RESOLUTION ADOPTED FEBRUARY 28, 1873." THE MAP IS MOST EASILY IDENTIFIED BY THE ABSENCE OF THE NAME OF WILLIAM HOLE, WHICH HAS BEEN OMITTED FROM THE IMPRINT IN THE CARTOUCHE. IN ADDITION, THE ENGRAVING STYLE IS QUITE DIFFERENT. THE REPRINT EDITION WAS PRODUCED BY FRANCIS WALLER GILMER AND JOHN HOLT RICE, WHO WERE MEMBERS OF THE WILLIAM WIRT LITERARY CIRCLE IN RICHMOND. IT WAS REVIEWED IN THE NORTH AMERICAN REVIEW, APRIL, 1832. THE MAP MEASURES 31.7 X 40.7 CM AND IS ORIENTED WITH WEST TO THE TOP.

FOR A MORE COMPLETE REVIEW OF THE SMITH MAP, SEE MAP #112S5.

DATA IS FROM COOLIE VERNER'S "SMITH'S VIRGINIA AND ITS DERIVATIVES", MCS # 45.

EDITION & STATE INFO : THIS MAP IS THE SECOND EDITION OF THE JOHN SMITH MAP.

1ST. ED. - (1612) - SEE MAP # 112S5 FOR A COMPLETE REVIEW OF THE 12 STATES OF THIS EDITION.

2ND. ED. - (1819) - THIS IS THE MAP AS DESCRIBED HEREIN. IT CAN EASILY BE IDENTIFIED BECAUSE OF THE ABSENCE OF THE LINE IN THE IMPRINT "GRAVEN BY WILLIAM HOLE". OTHERWISE, THIS EDITION WAS COPIED FROM STATE 10 OF THE 1ST EDITION. THE STYLE OF THE ENGRAVING IS DIFFERENT THAN IN EDITION 1. THE LONGITUDE MARKS 311-307 ARE PRESENT, BUT NO NOTE IS MADE AS TO THE LOCATION OF THE PRIME MERIDIAN. IN 1980, WRITER WAS TOLD THAT THE ORIGINAL COPPERPLATE FOR THIS EDITION STILL EXISTS AND MIGHT BE AVAILABLE FOR PURCHASE, BUT WAS UNABLE TO LOCATE IT.

HFC OWNERSHIP DATA : HFC HAS A COPY OF THIS MAP IN OUTLINE COLORING. IT ALSO HAS THREE COPIES, STATE 6 (VERNER) IN A 1627 ED. OF SMITH'S GENERALL HISTORIE OF VIRGINIA, A DETACHED STATE 9 AND A STATE 10 SEPARATE OF THE ORIGINAL PRINTED SMITH MAP. THE STATE 6 IS SHORT CROPPED IN THE UPPER MARGIN WITHOUT LOSS INSIDE THE BORDER. THE STATE 9 IS COMPLETE. THE STATE 10 IS SHORT CROPPED IN THE LOWER MARGIN WITH ABOUT 1/4 INCH OF THE CARTOUCHE MISSING. THE STATE 6 HAS AN HFC ACQ. # OF S022-HN3Q* AND A MDHR # OF G1399-268 THE STATE 9 HAS AN HFC ACQ. # OF A018-UIG1 AND A MDHR # OF G1399-101. THE STATE 10 HAS AN HFC ACQ. # OF N022-G2 AND A MDHR # OF G1399-25.

BIBLIGRAPHICAL REFS. : VERNER, COOLIE, SMITH'S VIRGINIA AND ITS DERIVATIVES, MCS # 45, LONDON,1968, P. 28. SEE MAP #112S5 FOR A BIBLIOGRAPHY ABOUT THE SMITH MAP ITSELF.
