DESCRIPTION : THIS MAP FIRST APPEARED IN MATHEW CAREY'S GENERAL ATLAS, 58 MAPS, FOL., PHILADELPHIA: 1814 AS MAP # 16. IT LATER APPEARED IN THE EDITIONS OF THE ATLAS DATED 1817 AND 1818, BOTH AS MAP # 16. THESE ISSUES HAVE NOT BEEN EXAMINED. THE 1796 AND 1802 EDITIONS OF THE ATLAS CONTAINED MAPS OF MARYLAND ATTRIBUTED TO SAMUEL LEWIS. THIS 1814 EDITION DROPS ANY REFERENCE TO SAMUEL LEWIS ON THE MAP. THE MAP HAS LEWIS'S INSET OF WESTERN MARYLAND, BUT THERE ARE MANY DIFFERENCES. THE CAREY ISSUE IS DIVIDED INTO COUNTIES, WHICH THE LEWIS WAS NOT, AND NUMEROUS CHANGES IN GEOGRAPHICAL DETAILS ARE EVIDENT.

SHOALS ARE SHOWN BY DOTTED LINES. THERE ARE NO SOUNDINGS. DELAWARE AND VIRGINIA HAVE BEEN BLANKED OUT AS TO DETAILS. THE MAP IS IN OUTLINE COLORING. THE DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA IS MARKED OUT AS TO BOUNDRY AND THE CITY OF WASHINGTON IS REPRESENTED BY ENGRAVED DOTS AND OVERPRINTED WITH THE WORDS "PRESIDENT" AND "CAPITOL".

MATHEW CAREY, A NATIVE OF DUBLIN, CAME TO PHILADELPHIA IN 1784 WHERE HE FOUNDED A PRINTING AND PUBLISHING FIRM THE FOLLOWING YEAR. HIS FIRST CARTOGRAPHIC EFFORT, A GENERAL ATLAS FOR THE PRESENT WAR, WAS PUBLISHED IN 1794. IN 1795, CAREY PUBLISHED THE GENERAL ATLAS FOR CAREY'S EDITION OF GUTHRIE'S GEOGRAPHY IMPROVED. THE SIXTEEN MAPS OF AMERICAN STATES IN CAREY'S GENERAL ATLAS FOR THE PRESENT WAR, WERE REPRINTED WITH FIVE OTHERS IN HIS AMERICAN ATLAS, ALSO PUBLISHED IN 1795. CAREY HAD A NUMBER OF ENGRAVERS WHO DID CONTRACT WORK FOR HIM INCLUDING WILLIAM BARKER (WHO DID THE MAP DESCRIBED HEREIN), JOSEPH SCOTT, JAMES THACKARA AND JOHN VALLANCE OF PHILADELPHIA, SAMUEL HILL OF BOSTON, AMOS DOOLITTLE OF NEW HAVEN, BENJAMIN TANNER OF NEW YORK AND SAMUEL LEWIS. CAREY RETIRED IN 1822 AND THE BUSINESS WAS CARRIED ON BY HIS SON HENRY C. CAREY AND HIS SON-IN-LAW ISAAC LEA UNDER THE CAREY & LEA IMPRINT.

DATA IS FROM RISTOW, PHILLIPS ATLASES AND FROM OBSERVATION OF THE COPY IN THE HUNTINGFIELD COLLECTION.

EDITION & STATE INFO : THE MAP WAS ISSUED IN 1814, 1817 AND 1818 IN EDITIONS OF CAREY'S GENERAL ATLAS, ALL HAVING THE PAGE NUMBER 16. COPIES OF THE 1817 AND 1818 ISSUES HAVE NOT BEEN EXAMINED. HOWEVER, THE 1814 ISSUE IS UNDATED, SO THEY MAY ALL BE THE SAME STATE. THE DATING ON THE BACK OF THE HUNTINGFIELD COPY OF 1808 IS IN ERROR.

HFC OWNERSHIP DATA : THE HUNTINGFIELD COLLECTION HAS A GOOD COPY IN OUTLINE COLOR ON HEAVY PAPER BACKED WITH LINEN AND WITHOUT ANY WATERMARK. IT HAS VERY WIDE MARGINS. ON THE REVERSE SIDE IS A PRINTED NOTE THAT READS "STATE MAP PUBLISHED BY MATHEW CAREY PHILADELPHIA, PENNA. EDITION OF 1808", WHICH IS PROBABLY IN ERROR. THE MAP HAS AN ACQ. # OF BB023-DFF AND A MDHR # OF MSA SC1399-40. IN ADDITION, THE COLLECTION HAS A COLORED COPY FROM THE LIBRARY OF CONGRESS COLLECTION WITH A MDHR # OF MSA SC1399-321 (REPRO).
