DESCRIPTION : THIS MAP IS GENERALLY BASED ON THE SAMUEL LEWIS MAP OF 1794, ALTHOUGH IT WAS REENGRAVED AND HAS A NUMBER OF MAJOR CHANGES. IT INCLUDES ONLY INFORMATION ON MARYLAND, CONTAINS DOTTED LINES DEPICTING COUNTY BORDERS AND IS NOT ENGRAVED AS CLEARLY AS THE EARLIER MAP. THE CHESAPEAKE BAY IS SHOWN SHADED WITH HORIZONTAL PARALLEL LINES. ROCK HALL, WHICH WAS NOT IN THE 1794 MAP, IS SHOWN INCORRECTLY WELL NORTH OF SWAN POINT. THIS MAP FIRST APPEARED IN THE ARROWSMITH & LEWIS A NEW AND ELEGANT GENERAL ATLAS, 4o, PHILADELPHIA: JOHN CONRAD & CO., 1804.

THE MAP WAS LATER PUBLISHED IN THE SAME ATLAS IN 1805 TO ACCOMPANY THE NEW IMPROVED EDITION OF MORSE'S GEOGRAPHY, 4o, BOSTON: THOMAS & ANDREWS. THE LIBRARY OF CONGRESS COPY APPEARS IDENTICAL TO THE 1804 STATE. THE ISSUES OF 1812 AND 1819, BOTH PUBLISHED IN BOSTON BY THOMAS & ANDREWS TO ACCOMPANY MORSE'S GEOGRAPHY, HAVE NOT BEEN EXAMINED FOR ANY PLATE CHANGES, BUT RISTOW INDICATES THAT THE MAPS IN ALL FOUR RELEASES OF THE ATLAS WERE UNCHANGED.

DATA IS FROM RISTOW AND FROM PHILLIPS ATLASES.

EDITION & STATE INFO : THE MAP APPEARED IN THE ARROWSMITH & LEWIS A NEW AND ELEGANT GENERAL ATLAS IN 1804, 1805, 1812 AND 1819. THE 1805 ISSUE APPEARS IDENTICAL TO THAT OF 1804. THE 1812 AND 1819 ISSUES HAVE NOT YET BEEN EXAMINED, BUT RISTOW INDICATES THAT THE MAPS IN ALL FOUR RELEASES OF THE ATLAS WERE UNCHANGED.

HFC OWNERSHIP DATA : THE HUNTINGFIELD COLLECTION HAS A WEAK COPY OF THE 1804 ATLAS, WITH THIS MAP IN OUTLINE COLOR. IT HAS CONSIDERABLE BROWNING. THE ATLAS IS IN ITS ORIGINAL BOARDS, BUT THEY ARE DETACHED. IT HAS AN ACQ. # OF H018-UIEQ* AND A MDHR # OF MSA SC1399-266. THE COLLECTION ALSO HAS A REPRODUCTION OF THE LIBRARY OF CONGRESS COPY OF THE 1805 ISSUE WITH A MDHR # OF MSA SC1399-342 (REPRO).
