DESCRIPTION : THIS MAP COVERS THE WHOLE OF THE UNITED STATES FROM NEWFOUNDLAND TO FLORIDA AND WEST TO THE MISSISSIPPI RIVER. ITS REPRESENTATION OF THE MARYLAND/CHESAPEAKE AREA IS TOO SMALL TO BE SIGNIFICANT TO A MARYLAND/CHESAPEAKE COLLECTION. THE MOUNTAINS ARE PROMINENTLY OUTLINED IN BROWN. IT WAS PUBLISHED IN BOOK 2 OF C.F. VOLNEY'S TABLEAU DE CLIMAT ET DU SOL DES ETATS UNIS D'AMERIQUE, PARIS: CHEZ COURCIER, 1803. THIS FIRST EDITION IN FRENCH WAS REPUBLISHED IN ENGLISH IN PHILADELPHIA IN 1804 BY J. CONRAD & CO. AND IN LONDON FOR J. JOHNSON THAT SAME YEAR.

EDITION & STATE INFO : THREE EDITIONS OF THE TABLEAU WERE PUBLISHED, IN PARIS IN 1803, IN PHILADELPHIA IN 1804 AND IN LONDON IN 1804. THERE WAS A TRANSLATION OF THE MAP TO ENGLISH, WITH THE TITLE "MAP OF THE UNITED STATES OF NORTH AMERICA" (PHILLIPS). THIS UNDOUBTEDLY WAS A DIFFERENT PLATE AND IS IN THE EDITION OF THE BOOK PUBLISHED IN LONDON. WHETHER THE PHILADELPHIA EDITION IS A THIRD PLATE IS NOT KNOWN TO THE WRITER.

HFC OWNERSHIP DATA : THE HUNTINGFIELD COLLECTION HAS A COPY IN OUTLINE COLORING WITH CONSIDERABLE BROWNING THROUGHOUT. IT HAS AN ACQ. # OF CO027-H2 AND A MDHR # OF MSA SC1399-475.
