DESCRIPTION : THIS SMALL MAP APPEARS IN GENERAL LAYOUT TO BE A SMALL SCALE VERSION, WITH SOME OMISSIONS BECAUSE OF SIZE, OF THE SAMUEL LEWIS MAP OF THE STATE OF MARYLAND OF 1794. THE CAREY MAP WAS FIRST PUBLISHED AS MAP # 13 IN CAREY'S AMERICAN POCKET ATLAS IN 1796 (SEE MAP # 296C5). IT WAS ENGRAVED BY WILLIAM BARKER. THE STATE DESCRIBED HEREIN WAS PUBLISHED IN THE SECOND EDITION OF THE AMERICAN POCKET ATLAS, PHILADELPHIA: MATHEW CAREY, 1801, AS MAP # 13 AND AN 1802 ISSUE WAS RELEASED THAT WAS IDENTICAL TO THE ONE OF 1801. FEW FEATURES OUTSIDE OF MARYLAND ARE GIVEN. THE CHESAPEAKE BAY IS EMPHASIZED WITH ENGRAVED PARALLEL LINES ALONG THE COASTS. THE COASTLINE PRESENTATION IS CRUDELY DRAWN.

ADDITIONAL STATES WERE PUBLISHED IN 1805, WITH A SIMILAR 1810 ISSUE C5AND IN 1813 WITH AN IDENTICAL 1814 ISSUE. "A NEW MAP OF MARYLAND" WAS ALSO PUBLISHED IN 1814 AND APPEARED IN CAREY'S GENERAL ATLAS. IT WAS LARGER THAN THIS SERIES AND QUITE DIFFERENT, ALTHOUGH WITH THE SAME TITLE.

MATHEW CAREY, A NATIVE OF DUBLIN, CAME TO PHILADELPHIA IN 1784 WHERE HE FOUNDED A PRINTING AND PUBLISHING FIRM THE FOLLOWING YEAR. HIS FIRST CARTOGRAPHIC EFFORT, A GENERAL ATLAS FOR THE PRESENT WAR, WAS PUBLISHED IN 1794. IN 1795, CAREY PUBLISHED THE GENERAL ATLAS FOR CAREY'S EDITION OF GUTHRIE'S GEOGRAPHY IMPROVED. THE SIXTEEN MAPS OF AMERICAN STATES IN CAREY'S GENERAL ATLAS FOR THE PRESENT WAR, WERE REPRINTED WITH FIVE OTHERS IN HIS AMERICAN ATLAS, ALSO PUBLISHED IN 1795. CAREY HAD A NUMBER OF ENGRAVERS WHO DID CONTRACT WORK FOR HIM INCLUDING WILLIAM BARKER (WHO DID THE MAP DESCRIBED HEREIN), JOSEPH SCOTT, JAMES THACKARA AND JOHN VALLANCE OF PHILADELPHIA, SAMUEL HILL OF BOSTON, AMOS DOOLITTLE OF NEW HAVEN, BENJAMIN TANNER OF NEW YORK AND SAMUEL LEWIS. CAREY RETIRED IN 1822 AND THE BUSINESS WAS CARRIED ON BY HIS SON HENRY C. CAREY AND HIS SON-IN-LAW ISAAC LEA UNDER THE CAREY & LEA IMPRINT.

DATA IS FROM RISTOW, WHEAT & BRUN, PHILLIPS ATLASES, FROM AN EXAMINATION AND COMPARISON OF THE ATLASES IN THE LIBRARY OF CONGRESS AND FROM OBSERVATION OF THE STATES OF THIS MAP IN THE HUNTINGFIELD COLLECTION.
