NEBENZAHL NOTES: "WHILE ON A SMALL SCALE, THIS WELL-ENGRAVED MAP CONVEYS CONSIDERABLE USEFUL INFORMATION. THE RAVINES AND CREEK BEDS THAT FIGURED IN THE ACTION [AT THE BATTLE OF YORKTOWN, VA.] ARE CLEARLY INDICATED, AS ARE DETAILS OF THE SEVERAL PARALLELS OF THE SIEGE. TROOP ENCAMPMENTS AND THE ARTILLERY PACK OF THE FRANCO-AMERICAN FORCES ARE INDICATED, AND THE COMMANDERS' NAMES APPEAR... LINES OF FIRE SEAWARD FOR THE SHORE BATTERIES APPEAR AS TO THE SUNKEN BRITISH VESSELS AND TWO NAMED SHIPS OF THE LINE" (NEBENZAHL, # 197). UNLIKE THE 1ST EDITION, THIS EDITION SHOWS THE FORCES OF THE THREE COUNTRIES BY SYMBOLS RATHER THAN BY COLORS.

THIS SECOND EDITION WAS CONTAINED IN VOL. 2, OPPOSITE 412 OF CHARLES STEDMAN'S HISTORY OF THE ORIGIN, PROGRESS, AND TERMINATION OF THE AMERICAN WAR, 2 VOLS., LONDON: 1794. IT IS ON THE SAME SCALE AS THE FIRST EDITION. THE CHANGES FROM THE 1ST EDITION WERE COSMETIC. A LATER MAP EDITION WAS PRINTED IN 1795 IN THE GERMAN EDITION OF STEDMAN'S HISTORY, PUBLISHED IN BERLIN. THIS EDITION HAS NOT BEEN SEEN BY WRITER. NEBENZAHL'S BIBLIOGRAPHY (# 203) GIVES THE TITLE OF THE MAP IN THE GERMAN EDITION AS "PLAN DER BELAGERUNG VON YORK-TOWN IN VIRGINIA". ZU STEDMAN'S GESCHICHTE DES AMERIKANISCHEN KRIEGS. D.E. SOTZMANN DEL. A. SANDER FECIT." THE SCALE IS APPROXIMATELY 1: 36,800. (SEE MAP # 295S8). SABIN NOTES THAT "STEDMAN'S HISTORY IS GENERALLY CONSIDERED THE BEST CONTEMPORARY ACCOUNT OF THE REVOLUTION WRITTEN FROM THE BRITISH SIDE. ...[STEDMAN] WAS APPARENTLY THE AMERICAN LOYALIST, WHO WAS BORN IN PHILADELPHIA, SERVED AS COMMISARY OF PRISONERS UNDER HOWE, ETC., WAS RETIRED AS COLONEL ON HALF-PAY, WAS APPOINTED TO EXAMINE THE CLAIMS OF AMERICAN LOYALISTS AND DIED WHEN DEPUTY-COMPTROLLER OF THE STAMP OFFICE IN JUNE, 1812."

DATA IS FROM NEBENZAHL, VERNER, AND SABIN, AND FROM OBSERVATION OF THE EDITIONS IN THE HUNTINGFIELD COLLECTION.
