DESCRIPTION : THIS IS AN IMPORTANT, DETAILED, TOPOGRAPHICAL MAP, THE BEST OF MARYLAND TO THAT TIME. ROADS, POLITICAL BOUNDARIES AND MANY OTHER FEATURES ARE NOTED. THE MAP STANDS COMPARISON WITH THE BEST MAPS YET PUBLISHED OF THE NORTHERN BORDER OF THE STATE. THIS MAP IS A SHEET 29.5 BY 51.75 INCHES ON A SCALE OF 1" = 5 MILES. THE COUNTIES ARE OUTLINED IN DIFFERENT COLORS. ALTHOUGH SUPPOSEDLY BASED ON AN ORIGINAL SURVEY, NO REFERENCE TO THE MAN OR HIS WORK HAS BEEN FOUND AND IT IS PROBABLE THAT ONLY CERTAIN PORTIONS OF THE AREA WERE VISITED BY HIM. THE WORK IS EXECUTED WITH GREAT SKILL. IT SHOWS THE IRON WORKS AT PRINCIPIO, NORTH OF ELKTON IN WASHINGTON COUNTY, THE GLASS WORKS AT MIDDLETOWN, AND THE COPPER MINES AT CREEGARSTOWN. HAGERSTOWN IS CALLED ELIZABETHTOWN, HAVRE DE GRACE IS CALLED SUSQUEHANNA CITY AND ROCKVILLE IS INDICATED AS MONTGOMERY C.H.

THE INSET OF THE CITY OF WASHINGTON IS 22 9/16" X 22 5/8" AND HAS A SCALE OF 1" = 200 POLES.

A REDUCED SIZE AND TRANSLATED VERSION OF THIS MAP BY VON D.F. SOTZMANN WAS PUBLISHED IN EBERLINGS ERDBESCHREIBUNG VON AMERIKA IN 1797. THE SOTZMANN MAP GAINED WIDE RECOGNITION IN EUROPE (SEE MAP #297S5).
