DESCRIPTION : THIS DETAILED MAP OF THE SIEGE OF YORKTOWN SHOWS LOCATION AND SIZE OF BRITISH, AMERICAN AND FRENCH FORCES. IT SHOWS THE NAME AND LOCATIONS OF SHIPS OF WAR AND GIVES DETAILED TOPOGRAPHICAL INFORMATION OF THE AREA OF THE ENGAGEMENT. THIS MAP APPEARED IN VOLUME 4 OF WILLIAM GORDON'S 4 VOLUME HISTORY OF THE RISE, PROGRESS AND ESTABLISHMENT OF THE INDEPENDENCE OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA..., LONDON, 1788, OPPOSITE 196. SABIN NOTES THAT "GORDON IS DESERVEDLY RECKONED AS ONE OF THE MOST IMPARTIAL AND RELIABLE OF THE NUMEROUS HISTORIANS OF THE AMERICAN REVOLUTION".

NEBENZAHL'S BIBLIOGRAPHY INDICATES THAT THE MAP ITSELF IS BASED ON ONE ENTITLED "PLAN OF THE INVESTMENT OF YORK & GLOUCESTER BY THE ALLIED ARMIES IN SEPTR. & OCTR. 1781", WHICH APPEARED IN DAVID RAMSAY'S HISTORY OF THE REVOLUTION OF SOUTH CAROLINA FROM A BRITISH PROVINCE TO AN INDEPENDENT STATE, ISAAC COLLINS, TRENTON, 1785, VOL. 2, OPPOSITE 326.

THOMAS CONDER IS LISTED AS THE ENGRAVER ON THE MAP, ALTHOUGH WE HAVE NOT YET DETERMINED WHO DREW IT.

EDITION & STATE INFO : NEBENZAHL INDICATES THAT THIS MAP IS BASED ON ONE 22 X 20 CM. ENTITLED "PLAN OF THE INVESTMENT OF YORK & GLOUCESTER BY THE ALLIED ARMIES IN SEPTR. & OCTR. 1781", WHICH WAS INCLUDED IN DAVID RAMSAY'S HISTORY OF THE REVOLUTION OF SOUTH CAROLINA, ISAAC COLLINS, TRENTON, 1785, VOL. 2 OF 2, OPPOSITE 326. THIS MAP IS ON A SCALE OF 1:29,500. SEE MAP # 285R5. THE RAMSAY MAP WAS ALSO THE BASIS FOR A MAP 22 X 20 CM. ENTITLED "PLAN DU SIEGE D'YORK ET DE GLOUCESTER PAR LES ARMEES ALLIEES, EN SEPTEMBRE ET OCTOBRE 1781. PICQUET SCULPT." IT APPEARS IN THE 1787 DAVID RAMSAY HISTOIRE DE LA REVOLUTION D'AMERIQUE, CHEZ FROULLE, PARIS, OPPOSITE 398. THE MAP IS ON A SCALE OF 1:50,000. A LATER STATE OF THIS MAP WAS ISSUED IN 1796 WHEN THE HISTOIRE WAS REPUBLISHED WITH CHEZ MOUTARDIER AS PUBLISHER. THIS STATE HAS "TOM. II, PL. 4" ON THE LEFT TOP MARGIN AND "PAG. 399" ADDED ON THE RIGHT TOP MARGIN.
