DESCRIPTION : THIS MAP COVERS FROM THE MOUTH OF THE PATUXET RIVER TO BELOW CAPE HENRY, INCLUDING THE LOWER CHESAPEAKE AND VIRGINIA. IT SHOWS AND NAMES THE MAJOR ROADS, TOWNS AND COUNTIES. THE MAP IS INCLUDED AS PLATE VIII IN DR. WILLIAM GORDON'S THE HISTORY OF THE RISE, PROGRESS, AND ESTABLISHMENT OF THE INDEPENDENCE OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, INCLUDING AN ACCOUNT OF THE LATE WAR; AND OF THE THIRTEEN COLONIES, FROM THEIR ORIGIN TO THAT PERIOD, LONDON, 1788. SABIN NOTES THAT "GORDON IS DESERVEDLY RECKONED AS ONE OF THE MOST IMPARTIAL AND RELIABLE OF THE NUMEROUS HISTORIANS OF THE AMERICAN REVOLUTION." THOMAS CONDER IS LISTED AS THE ENGRAVER ON THE MAP, ALTHOUGH WE HAVE NOT YET DETERMINED WHETHER HE DREW IT. VERNER STATES THAT THE MAP IS BASED ON THE FRY & JEFFERSON MAP OF 1753.
