DESCRIPTION : THE MAP WAS PUBLISHED IN THE SCOTS MAGAZINE, 1781, EDINBURGH, VOL. 43, OPPOSITE PAGE 635. THIS MAP IS UNUSUAL BECAUSE OF THE S SHAPE OF THE BORDER BETWEEN DELAWARE AND MARYLAND AROUND WILMINGTON. IN THAT REGARD, IT APPEARS TO BE AN ABBREVIATED DERIVATIVE AS TO AREA COVERED AND PLACE NAMES OF A MAP PUBLISHED BY JOHN BEW DATED DECEMBER 31, 1780 (SEE MAP # 280B5), WHICH IS THE ONLY OTHER MAP TO GIVE THIS PECULIAR REPRESENTATION OF THE BORDER. THE 1780 MAP WAS DONE ANONYMOUSLY FOR THE POLITICAL MAGAZINE, LONDON, 1780, VOL. I, DEC., 1780, OPPOSITE PAGE 787.

THE BELL MAP COVERS AN AREA WEST TO ONLY NEAR THE 76TH LONGITUDE LINE, WHEREAS THE BEW MAP EXTENDS BEYOND THE ALLEGHANY MOUNTAINS PAST LONGITUDE 78. BEW'S MAP ALSO EXTENDS SLIGHTLY INTO NORTH CAROLINA, WHEREAS THE BELL MAP STOPS JUST SOUTH OF CAPE HENRY. THE BEW MAP FOLLOWS THE BROAD OUTLINES OF THE FRY AND JEFFERSON MAP, ALTHOUGH IT DOESN'T SHOW ROADS AND DOES FILL IN BOUNDARIES (INCORRECTLY) THAT WERE OMITTED IN THE FRY AND JEFFERSON MAP. VERNER CONCLUDES THAT THE BELL MAP IS OF NO SIGNIFICANCE.

DATA IS FROM PHILLIPS MAPS AND FROM OBSERVATION OF THE COPY IN THE HUNTINGFIELD COLLECTION.

EDITION & STATE INFO : ONLY A SINGLE EDITION AND STATE OF THE MAP IS KNOWN.

HFC OWNERSHIP DATA : THE HUNTINGFIELD COLLECTION HAS A GOOD COPY OF THE MAP DESCRIBED IN OUTLINE COLORING. IT HAS AN ACQ. # OF BB023-DHN AND A MDHR # OF MSA SC1399-226.
