DESCRIPTION : THIS MAP, WHICH COVERS FROM PHILADELPHIA IN THE NORTH TO THE NORTHERN PART OF NORTH CAROLINA IN THE SOUTH AND FROM THE ATLANTIC OCEAN TO WEST OF THE ALLEGHANY MOUNTAINS, IS BASED ON THE FRY AND JEFFERSON MAP. THE REPRESENTATION OF THE ALLEGHANY MOUNTAINS IS SIMILAR BUT NOT IDENTICAL. COUNTIES ARE NAMED BUT NO COUNTY BOUNDARIES ARE INCLUDED. THIS MAP DOES NOT SHOW ROADS, AS DID THE FRY & JEFFERSON MAP. THE BOUNDARY LINE BETWEEN MARYLAND AND DELAWARE IS SHOWN IN A VERY PECULIAR WAY, WITH AN S SHAPED CURVE NEAR WILMINGTON. NO BOUNDARY BETWEEN THE TWO STATES WAS SHOWN IN THE FRY AND JEFFERSON MAP. DELAWARE IS NOT SHOWN AS HAVING A COMMON BOUNDARY WITH PENNSYLVANIA. VERNER CHARACTERIZES THE ENGRAVING AS CRISP AND CLEAR, BUT THE MAP IS PRINTED ON POOR QUALITY PAPER. VERNER IDENTIFIES THE PRIMARY WATERMARK AS BRITTANIA SEATED IN A CIRCLE SURMOUNTED BY A CROWN AND THE COUNTERMARK AS AN R IN A CIRCLE WITH FLOWERS[?].

THIS MAP WAS PUBLISHED IN THE POLITICAL MAGAZINE IN LONDON, 1780, VOL. 1, DEC. 1780, OPPOSITE PAGE 787 AND THE CARTOGRAPHER IS ANONYMOUS. IT WAS ENGRAVED BY JOHN LODGE. THIS MAP SERVED AS THE BASIS FOR AN ABBREVIATED DERIVATIVE ENGRAVED BY A. BELL FOR THE SCOTS MAGAZINE IN 1781. (SEE MAP # 281B5).

BEW WAS A BOOKSELLER AND PUBLISHER AT 29 PATERNOSTER ROW IN LONDON. HE PUBLISHED THE POLITICAL MAGAZINE FROM 1780 TO 1785, WITH MAPS, AND DIED IN 1793. JOHN LODGE (FL. 1754-96) WAS A GEOGRAPHER AND ENGRAVER AT 45 SHOE LANE IN LONDON. HE WORKED ON THE POLITICAL MAGAZINE FROM 1780 TO 1790.

THIS MAP WAS ALSO PUBLISHED IN THE AMERICAN REVOLUTION ATLAS IN 1780 AND 1782 AS MAP # 15. THIS WAS A PUT-TOGETHER WAR MAP ATLAS IN WHICH ALL THE MAPS WERE TAKEN FROM THE POLITICAL MAGAZINE FOR 1780 AND 1782.

DATA IS FROM PHILLIPS, VERNER'S NOTES, TOOLEY'S DICTIONARY AND FROM OBSERVATION OF THE COPY IN THE HUNTINGFIELD COLLECTION.

EDITION & STATE INFO : ONLY A SINGLE EDITION AND STATE IS KNOWN AND IS AS DESCRIBED, ALTHOUGH THE MAP SERVED AS THE BASIS FOR ONE BY BELL IN THE SCOTS MAGAZINE IN 1781 (SEE MAP # 281B5).

HFC OWNERSHIP DATA : THE HUNTINGFIELD COLLECTION HAS A GOOD BLACK AND WHITE COPY OF THIS MAP. IT WAS FOLDED TO FIT INTO A MAGAZINE. THERE ARE FIVE PINHOLES IN THE MAP. THE BACK OF THE MAP SHOWS SOME BLEED THROUGH FROM THE ACCOMPANYING ARTICLE, WHICH WAS ENTITLED "BRITISH MANIFESTO". THE MAP HAS AN ACQ. # OF A021- DIG AND A MDHR # OF MSA SC1399-52.
