DESCRIPTION : THIS IS STATE 3 OF THE PIRATED SECOND EDITION OF THE LEWIS EVANS MAP OF 1755. SEE MAP # 255E5 FOR A MUCH MORE COMPLETE DESCRIPTION OF THIS MAP. WE ARE UNABLE TO DATE THIS MAP EXACTLY. KLINEFELTER ASSIGNS A ca.1768 DATE AND STEVENS BELIEVES THE ABSENCE OF THE WORDS "AND PART OF NEW-FRANCE" FROM THE TITLE INDICATES THAT IT WAS PUBLISHED AFTER THE TREATY OF PARIS IN 1763. THE MAP ALSO APPEARED AS PLATE NO. 32 IN SAYER & JEFFERY'S A GENERAL TOPOGRAPHY OF NORTH AMERICA AND THE WEST INDIES, LONDON, 1768.

THE SECOND EDITION OF THE EVANS MAP WAS PIRATED BY THOMAS KITCHINS IN 1756. AS IN STATE 2 OF THIS EDITION, DATED 1758, THE MAP DESCRIBED HEREIN HAS THE NAMES OF SEVERAL NEW FORTS ON THE BACK SETTLEMENTS ADDED AND "Ft. duQUESNE DESTROY'D 1758 NOW CALLED PITTSBURG." IN PLACE OF "Ft. duQUESNE".

THIS EDITION OF THE MAP IS INTERESTING BECAUSE OF THE NOTE ON THE CENTER RIGHT AS FOLLOWS: "WERE THERE NOTHING AT STAKE BETWEEN THE CROWN OF GREAT BRITAIN AND FRANCE BUT THE LANDS ON THE OHIO, WE MAY RECKON IT AS GREAT A PRIZE AS HAS EVER BEEN CONTENDED FOR BETWEEN TWO NATIONS. FOR THIS COUNTRY IS OF THAT VAST EXTENT WESTWARD AS TO EXCEED IN GOOD LAND ALL THE EUROPEAN DOMINIONS OF GREAT BRITAIN FRANCE AND SPAIN, AND WHICH ARE ALMOST BEEN MADE ACQUAINTED WITH ITS VALUE AND GREAT IMPORTANCE, THE LARGE STRIDES THE FRENCH HAVE BEEN MAKING FOR SEVERAL YEARS PAST IN THEIR INCROACHMENTS ON HIS DOMINIONS, THAT HIS MAJESTY WOULD SACRIFICE ONE OF THE BEST GEMS IN HIS CROWN TO THEIR USURPATION AND BOUNDLESS AMBITION."

DATA IS FROM KLINEFELTER AND STEVENS AND FROM OBSERVATION OF THE COPY OF THIS MAP IN THE HUNTINGFIELD COLLECTION.

EDITION & STATE INFO : THREE EDITIONS IN A TOTAL OF 19 STATES ARE KNOWN AND OTHERS ARE LIKELY. SOME ARE ATTRIBUTED TO EVANS AND SOME NOT. KLINEFELTER'S STUDY IN THE AMERICAN PHILOSOPHICAL SOCIETY TRANSACTIONS IS THE BEST SOURCE. WHEAT AND BRUN AND GIPSON ARE GOOD ON EDITION 1. THEY SUGGEST THAT THERE MAY HAVE BEEN AN ADDITIONAL STATE PRIOR TO STATE 1, WITH THE INSET OF THE ILLINOIS COUNTRY OMITTED. KLINEFELTER AND STEVENS ARE THE BEST SOURCES ON THE OTHER EDITIONS AND STATES. SEE MAP # 255E5 FOR A COMPLETE ENUMERATION OF THE EDITIONS AND STATES OF THE MAP.
