DESCRIPTION : THIS IS THE THIRD EDITION, STATE 1, 1767 ISSUE OF JOHN THORNTON'S MAP OF THIS TITLE. IT IS ALMOST AN EXACT COPY OF EDITION 1, STATE 5 (SEE MAP 189T5). IT WAS FIRST USED IN A PIRATED EDITION OF THE ENGLISH PILOT THE FOURTH BOOK, PRINTED IN DUBLIN BY GEORGE GRIERSON IN 1749. THIS ISSUE OF THE 1749 MAP WAS BY HIS SON, BOULTER GRIERSON. IT IS EXTREMELY RARE. THE ENGRAVING IS NOT AS GOOD QUALITY AS THE ORIGINAL AND THE PAPER IS OF POOR QUALITY AND UNWATERMARKED. GEORGE GRIERSON LIVED FROM 1709 TO 1753 AND WAS THE FIRST OF A FAMILY OF PRINTERS PROMINENT IN DUBLIN PUBLISHING CIRCLES FOR MANY YEARS. IN 1727 HE BECAME KING'S PRINTER.THIS MAY HAVE PROMPTED HIS PIRACIES BECAUSE,IN ADDITION TO THE ENGLISH PILOT, HE APPROPRIATED MOLL'S THE WORLD DESCRIBED IN 1733.

BOULTER GRIERSON, GEORGE'S SECOND SON, ACQUIRED POSSESSION OF THE PLATES AND PUBLISHED THE SECOND PRINTING IN 1767. HIS MOTHER, GEORGE'S SECOND WIFE, WAS THE SISTER OF THE NOTED PRINTER JAMES BLOW OF BELFAST.

THE ORIGINAL CHART FROM WHICH THIS ED. WAS COPIED FROM JOHN THORNTON'S MOST NOTABLE CONTRIBUTION TO VA-MD CARTOGRAPHY.THE VA-MD PORTION IS A CAREFUL COPY OF THE HERRMAN MAP OF 1673, ALTERED OVER THE YEARS BY NEW INFO FROM OTHER SOURCES, SUCH AS MARK TIDDEMAN AND OTHERS. THE THORNTON CHART IS ENGRAVED ON TWO PLATES: A JOINED IMPRESSION MEASURES 79.7 CM N-S BY 50 CM E-W. IT IS ORIENTED TO THE WEST. NAVIGATIONAL RATHER THAN LAND FEATURES ARE EMPHASIZED. THORNTON'S CHART WAS IN USE FOR SOME 105 YEARS BUT WAS OBSOLETED BY THE HOXTON CHART OF 1735, SOME 32 YEARS BEFORE THE PUBLICATION OF THE GRIERSON ISSUE.

DATA IS FROM VERNER'S STUDY OF THE ENGLISH PILOT THE FOURTH BOOK.

EDITION & STATE INFO : THERE ARE THREE EDITIONS. THE FIRST (SEE MAP #189T5) HAS 5 STATES. THE SECOND (SEE MAP #243M3) HAS 2 STATES AND THE THIRD, THE PIRATED EDITION DESCRIBED HEREIN, HAS A SINGLE STATE IN TWO ISSUES (SEE ALSO MAP # 249G5).

- STATE 4-(1706-1728)- BOTH GEOGRAPHICAL AND BIBLIOGRAPHICAL CHANGES ARE MADE. PART OF THE PLATE IS RECUT BUT SOME SIGNS OF PLATE WEAR ARE APPARENT.

- STATE 5-(1728-1737)- THE IMPRINT IS REMOVED.CHANGES ARE BOTH GEOGRAPHICAL AND BIBLIOGRAPHICAL. SOUNDINGS ARE ADDED ALONG THE ENTIRE OCEAN COAST.

ED. 2- STATE 1-(1743-1770)- SEE MAP # 243M3 FOR DETAILS ON THIS EDITION. THE IMPRINT WAS ADDED AS FOLLOWS: SOLD BY WILLIAM MOUNT & THOS. PAGE TOWER HILL.
