DESCRIPTION : THIS IS A REISSUE OF THE CORRECTED 1732 STATE OF THIS MAP (SEE MAP # 232S5). IT WAS INCLUDED IN A 5 PAGE FOLIO DOCUMENT OF TEXT WHICH SHOWS THREE MAP SURVEYS AND A DOCKET TITLE PENNSYLVANIA. BETWEEN TIMOTHY PEACEABLE (UPON THE DEMISE OF JOHN FOTHERGILL...) [BEING THE LONDON COMPANY] APPELLANT. AND CHRISTIAN STOVER, RESPONDENT. THE RESPONDENT'S CASE. THIS IS THE RESPONDENT'S CASE IN A LAND DISPUTE.

THE BOUNDARIES BETWEEN PENNSYLVANIA (INCLUDING PRESENT DELAWARE) AND MARYLAND WERE IN DISPUTE FROM ABOUT 1682. DESPITE A RULING IN 1685 WHICH GAVE THE LOWER COUNTIES TO PENNSYLVANIA, THE ARGUMENTS CONTINUED UNTIL 1732, WHEN AGREEMENT WAS REACHED BETWEEN PENN AND BALTIMORE. EACH PRODUCED MANUSCRIPT MAPS AT THEIR 1732 MEETING, AND BALTIMORE'S WAS ACCEPTED AND WAS TAKEN TO JOHN SENEX IN LONDON TO BE ENGRAVED ON A COPPERPLATE. THE RESULTING MAP SHOWED 2 CAPES AT THE MOUTH OF THE DELAWARE BAY, CAPE CORNELIUS AND CAPE HINLOPEN, 20 MILES SOUTH. THE AGREEMENT WAS SIGNED ON MAY 10, 1732, BUT BALTIMORE LEARNED THAT HENLOPEN WAS REALLY AT THE POSITION SHOWN FOR CAPE CORNELIUS, WHICH WOULD HAVE COST HIM OVER ONE-FOURTH OF THE PRESENT STATE OF DELAWARE. CONSEQUENTLY, HE REFUSED TO HONOR THE AGREEMENT AND THE PENNS TOOK THE DISPUTE TO COURT IN LONDON TO FORCE COMPLIANCE. THE DISPUTE CONTINUED UNTIL 1750, WHEN THE ENGLISH COURTS DECLARED THAT THE 1732 AGREEMENT WAS VALID AND SHOULD BE PERFORMED ON. IN 1763 AN AGREEMENT WAS REACHED TO HIRE MASON AND DIXON TO DO THE SURVEY WORK AND THE SURVEYS WERE COMPLETED IN 1767.

THE 1732 STATE OF THIS MAP IS SIGNIFICANT BECAUSE IT PROLONGED THE DISPUTE DUE TO ITS INCORRECT REPRESENTATION OF THE DELAWARE COAST AREA, BUT WAS ULTIMATELY ACCEPTED AS THE BASIS FOR THE MASON-DIXON SURVEY.

THIS DATA IS FROM THE WAINWRIGHT PAPER AND FROM PERSONAL OBSERVATION OF THE 1766 DOCUMENT.

EDITION & STATE INFO : TWO EDITIONS ARE THOUGHT TO HAVE EXISTED. THE FIRST IN 1732 BY SENEX AND THE SECOND IN 1733 BY BENJAMIN FRANKLIN.

1ST EDITION - (1732) - PROOF COPY - CONTAINS SCALE IN THE BOTTOM LEFT. MANY PLACE NAMES WERE OMITTED AND THE NEWCASTLE CIRCLE WAS COMPLETE TO THE DELAWARE RIVER. NO SOUTHERN BOUNDARY OF MARYLAND WAS SHOWN.

- (1732) - CORRECTED STATE - THE DOTTED LINE OF THE NORTHERN BOUNDARY OF MARYLAND WAS EXTENDED TO THE BORDER. THE SCALE WAS ELIMINATED ALTHOUGH TRACES SHOW THROUGH. THE SOUTHERN BOUNDARY OF MARYLAND WAS INSERTED. NUMEROUS NAMES WERE ADDED. THE CIRCLE BELOW NEWCASTLE WAS DROPPED. SEE MAP # 232S5.

- (1735) - REPRINT - SEVERAL HUNDRED COPIES WERE REPRINTED. NEARLY ALL ARE ENDORSED IN THE BOTTOM RIGHT CORNER INSIDE THE BORDER WITH "THIS IS LORD BALTIMORE'S OWN PLAN ANNEXT TO THE ARTICLES OF AGREEMENT OF 10 MAY 1732". THESE REPRINTS APPEARED APPENDED TO A PAMPHLET ENTITLED TRUE COPIES, LONDON, 1735.

- (1742) - REISSUE -SIXTY COPIES WERE REISSUED BY SENEX IN NOVEMBER, 1742 FOR USE IN THE BREVIATE, A 116 PAGE PRINTED BRIEF BY HENRY WOODFALL. THE MAPS WERE FROM THE ORIGINAL COPPERPLATE. LINES ON THE MORE IMPORTANT BOUNDARIES WERE OVERDRAWN IN RED FOR EMPHASIS.

- (1760) - REISSUE - THIS MAP WAS USED ON THE MANUSCRIPT DOCUMENTS APPOINTING BOTH THE PENNSLVANIA AND MARYLAND REPRESENTATIVES TO THE MASON-DIXON COMMISSION. TWO COPIES OF THE PENNSYLVANIA DOCUMENT AND TWO OF THE MARYLAND ONE ARE KNOWN. IN ADDITION TO THE COPY OF THE PENNSYLVANIA ONE IN THE HUNTINGFIELD COLLECTION, THE UNIVERSITY OF MARYLAND HAS THE SECOND. THE MARYLAND ARCHIVES HAS ONE COPY OF THE MARYLAND DOCUMENT. NO PLATE CHANGES ARE NOTED. THE DOCUMENTS ARE ON VELLUM. (SEE MAP # 260S5).

- (1766) - REISSUE - THIS MAP WAS REISSUED AND INCLUDED ALONG WITH A LARGE 5 PAGE FOLIO DOCUMENT OF TEXT, WHICH SHOWS THREE MAP SURVEYS AND A DOCKET TITLE PENNSLVANIA. BETWEEN TIMOTHY PEACEABLE (UPON THE DEMISE OF JOHN FOTHERGILL...)[BEING THE LONDON COMPANY] APPELLANT. AND CHRISTIAN STOVER, RESPONDENT. THE RESPONDENT'S CASE. JULY, 1766. THIS ISSUE IS PRINTED ON PAPER WITH A DUCK WATERMARK. TRACES OF THE SCALE REMOVED IN THE BOTTOM LEFT ARE STILL VISIBLE, SO THIS IS OBVIOUSLY FROM THE SAME PLATE AS THE 1732 EDITION. THIS IS THE MAP DESCRIBED HEREIN.

2ND ED. - 1ST ISSUE - (1733) - 500 COPIES OF THIS ISSUE WERE PRINTED IN 1733. THE MAP WAS COPIED FROM THE THOMAS PENN COPY OF THE ARTICLES OF AGREEMENT AND REPRODUCED AS A WOODCUT FROM THE COPPERPLATE IMPRESSION. THE UNION LIBRARY CATALOG, WASHINGTON, LISTS 11 LIBRARIES AS HOLDERS OF THIS IMPRINT. SEVERAL OTHERS ARE KNOWN TO EXIST. SEE MAP # 233S5.

- 2ND ISSUE - (1736/7) - ALL THAT IS KNOWN OF THIS EDITION IS THAT IT WAS ADVERTISED IN THE PENNSYLVANIA GAZETTE FROM JAN. 27-FEB, 3,1736/7 BY BENJAMIN FRANKLIN. FROM THE TITLE IN THE ADVERTISEMENT IT APPEARS THAT THIS IS A 2ND ISSUE OF THE 1733 PRINTING OF THE AGREEMENT. IF SO, THE SAME WOODCUT MAP WAS PROBABLY USED. HOWEVER, THERE ARE NO KNOWN COPIES.

HFC OWNERSHIP DATA : THE COPY IN THE HUNTINGFIELD COLLECTION OF THE MAP DESCRIBED HEREIN IS WITH A 5 PAGE FOLIO DOCUMENT OF THE LAND DISPUTE CASE. IT HAS A DUCK WATERMARK ON THE PAPER. PART OF THE MAP IS FAINTLY TINTED A PINKISH COLOR. IT HAS AN ACQ. # OF HS016-HUGF AND A MDHR # OF G1399-486(1). THE COLLECTION HAS A COPY OF THE CORRECTED 1732 EDITION WHICH HAS AN "IV" WATERMARK AND AN ACQ. # OF A021-U3 AND A MDHR # OF G1399-190. THE COLLECTION HAS A BLACK AND WHITE COPY OF THE 1ST EDITION, 1735 ISSUE WITH THE HANDWRITTEN INSCRIPTION. ON THE REVERSE SIDE, IN THE HANDWRITING OF JOHN FERNANDO PARIS, THE PENN'S LAWYER, ARE THE WORDS "LORD BALTIMORE'S OWN PLAN" AT THE TOP AND "PARIS" AT THE BOTTOM. THE ACQ. # IS A020-GG2 AND THE MDHR # IS G1399-189. FINALLY, THE COLLECTION ALSO HAS ONE OF THE TWO COPIES OF THE DOCUMENT APPOINTING THE PENNSYLVANIA REPRESENTATIVES TO THE MASON-DIXON COMMISSION IN 1760. IT IS ON VELLUM WITH THE MAP ON PAGE 1. THE ACQ. # IS N-CR018-NF2 AND THE MDHR # IS G1399-37. IT IS FROM THE CHEW FAMILY PAPERS.
