DESCRIPTION : THIS SMALL MAP COVERS THE AREA FROM PHILADELPHIA TO ALBEMARLE SOUND AND FROM EAST OF CAPE MAY TO THE "ALLAGANY MOUNTAINS". IT WAS INCLUDED IN TOBIAS SMOLLETT'S A COMPENDIUM OF AUTHENTIC AND ENTERTAINING VOYAGES..., LONDON, R. & J. DODSLEY, 1756, VOL 3, P. 125. BASED ON THE SHAPE OF THE DELMARVA PENINSULA, THE MAP IS DERIVED FROM THE FRY & JEFFERSON MAP OF 1753. THE MAP APPEARS TO HAVE BEEN REENGRAVED BY H. GAVIN IN 1767 AND INCLUDED IN THOMAS SALMON'S NEW GEOGRAPHICAL AND HISTORICAL GRAMMAR. (SEE MAP # 267G5).

THE MAP IS CRUDELY DONE, ALTHOUGH THIS FIRST EDITION IS CONSIDERABLY BETTER THAN THE SECOND. THE BORDERS BETWEEN STATES ARE DOTTED LINES. LONGITUDE IS GIVEN WEST FROM LONDON AT THE TOP AND BOTTOM. LATITUDE IS FROM 36 TO 40 DEG. NORTH.

DATA IS FROM OBSERVATION OF COPIES OF THESE TWO MAPS IN THE LIBRARY OF CONGRESS, FROM NOTES APPENDED TO THOSE MAPS, AND FROM THE COPY IN THE HUNTINGFIELD COLLECTION.

EDITION & STATE INFO : TWO EDITIONS ARE KNOWN TO EXIST AND THERE MAY HAVE BEEN OTHERS. ONLY A SINGLE STATE IS KNOWN FOR EACH EDITION.

ED. 1 - (1756)- THIS IS THE MAP DESCRIBED. "T. JEFFERYS. SCULP." IS BELOW THE BOTTOM NEAT LINE TO THE RIGHT. THE LETTER C IN NORTH CAROLINA IS CUT BY AN EXTENSION OF THE PAMPTICO R. FROM THE SOUTH. THE LETTERING AND DOTTED BORDERS BETWEEN STATES IS NEATER IN THIS EDITION THAN IN THE SECOND EDITION. QUEENS T. IS SHOWN ON THE EASTERN SHORE.

ED. 2 - (1767?)- H. GAVIN. SC. IS BELOW THE CARTOUCHE. THE JEFFERYS IMPRINT HAS BEEN REMOVED. THE LETTER C IN NORTH CAROLINA IS NOT CUT BY THE RIVER. THE DOTTED BORDERS BETWEEN STATES ARE SO IRREGULAR AS TO PROBABLY HAVE BEEN DRAWN FREEHAND. QUEENS T. HAS BEEN REENGRAVED AS QUEENS R. SEE MAP # 267G5.

DATA ON EDITIONS IS FROM OBSERVATION OF COPIES IN THE LIBRARY OF CONGRESS AND IN THE HUNTINGFIELD COLLECTION.

HFC OWNERSHIP DATA : THE HUNTINGFIELD COLLECTION HAS AN EXCELLENT COPY OF EDITION 1 IN OUTLINE COLORING WITH AN ACQ. # OF PG015-U2 AND A MDHR # OF G1399-609. HFC ALSO HAS A REPRODUCTION OF THE LIBRARY OF CONGRESS MAPS OF EDITIONS 1 AND 2, WITH MDHR #s OF (1756) G1399-337(REPRO) AND (1767) G1399-336(REPRO), RESPECTIVELY.
