DESCRIPTION : THIS SMALL SCALE MAP IS DERIVED FROM AND ATTRIBUTED TO THE JOHN MITCHELL MAP OF 1755 (SEE MAP # 255M5). UNLIKE THE MITCHELL MAP, THIS TIRION MAP IS ON A SINGLE SHEET. IT EXTENDS FROM NEWFOUNDLAND TO NORTHERN FLORIDA IN THE SOUTH AND TO THE MISSISSIPPI IN THE WEST. AS SUCH, THE REPRESENTATION OF MARYLAND IS TOO SMALL TO BE VERY SIGNIFICANT TO A MARYLAND COLLECTION.

THE MAP SHOWS THE ENGLISH COLONIES IN NORTH AMERICA, FRENCH TERRITORIAL CLAIMS, TOWNS AND CITIES, FORTS, ROADS AND TRAILS, INDIAN VILLAGES AND TRIBAL TERRITORY. THE DISPUTED FRENCH AND ENGLISH AREA IS SHOWN IN PINK. THE BOUNDARIES OF THE COLONIES ARE SHOWN IN DOTTED LINES EXTENDING TO THE MISSIS- SIPPI RIVER. PHILLIPS ATLASES INDICATES THAT THIS MAP WAS INCLUDED AS MAP # 104 IN NIEUWE EN BEKNOPTE HAND-ATLAS..., 111 COL. MAPS, FOL., TE AMSTERDAM, I. TIRION, 1744-1769. ALSO, THAT MOST OF THE MAPS IN THE ATLAS ARE IN THOMAS SALMON'S HEDENDAAGSCHE HISTORIE, OF TEGENWOORDIGE STAAT VON AMERICA, 3 V., 8o, TE AMSTERDAM, I. TIRION, 1766-69.

TIRION LIVED FROM 1705 TO 1765. HIS WIFE CONTINUED THE SHOP FOR TEN YEARS AFTER HIS DEATH. KOEMAN STATES THAT TIRION HIMSELF PROBABLY WAS NOT THE AUTHOR OR EDITOR OF THE MAPS PUBLISHED BY HIM. HE WAS MORE A BOOKSELLER AND PUBLISHER THAN A GEOGRAPHER OR CARTOGRAPHER.

DATA IS FROM KOEMAN, PHILLIPS ATLASES, SELLERS & VAN EE, AND FROM OBSERVATION OF THE COPY IN THE HUNTINGFIELD COLLECTION.

EDITION & STATE INFO : SEE MAP # 255M5 FOR A LISTING OF THE EDITIONS AND STATES OF THE JOHN MITCHELL MAP. ONLY A SINGLE EDITION AND STATE OF THE MAP DESCRIBED HEREIN IS KNOWN TO THE WRITER.

HFC OWNERSHIP DATA : THE HUNTINGFIELD COLLECTIONHAS A GOOD COLORED COPY WITH THE NUMBER "96" INSCRIBED BY HAND ON THE TOP RIGHT ON THE REVERSE SIDE. IT HAS AN ACQ. # OF BB023-HNT AND A MDHR # OF MSA SC1399-64.
