DESCRIPTION : THIS IS A COMPOSITE MAP CONSISTING OF JOHN SMITH'S MAP OF 1612 [MARKED 1606 ON THE COMPOSITE MAP], AUGMENTED WITH A SECTION COVERING DELAWARE AND NEW NETHERLANDS FROM A DUTCH MAP OF AROUND 1650. THE MOST NOTABLE DUTCH MAP OF THE TIME OF THIS AREA WAS BY VISSCHER ENTITLED "NOVI BELGII NOVAEQUE ANGLIAE NEC NON PARTIS VIRGINIA TABULA" PUBLISHED IN 1656. THIS MAP SUPPORTED THE POSITION OF THE PENNS IN THE BOUNDARY DISPUTE WITH LORD BALTIMORE. ONLY A FEW SETTLEMENTS ARE SHOWN ON THE MAP. FORT CASIMIR (NOW NEWCASTLE, DELAWARE) IS SHOWN. THE PURPOSE OF THE MAP WAS TO INDICATE WHAT INFORMATION WAS AVAILABLE TO THE KING IN 1685 WHEN HE RULED THAT THE THREE LOWER COUNTIES (NOW DELAWARE) BELONGED TO PENN, NOT TO BALTIMORE AND TO THOSE WHO FORMULATED THE DECREE OF NOV. 13, 1685 THAT "THE TRACT OF LAND LYING BETWEEN THE RIVER AND THE EASTERN SEA ON THE ONE SIDE & CHESAPEAKE BAY ON THE OTHER BE DIVIDED INTO EQUAL PARTS BY A LINE FROM THE LATITUDE OF CAPE HINLOPEN TO THE FORTIETH DEGREE OF NORTHERN LATITUDE." THE QUESTION ABOUT THE EXISTENCE OF A CAPE CORNELIUS AND THE LOCATION OF CAPE HENLOPEN WAS THE BASIS OF THE DISPUTE. FOR FURTHER INFORMATION ON THE CONTROVERSY, SEE MAP # 232S5.

THE LAWYER FOR THE PENNS, JOHN FERNANDO PARIS, AT CONSIDERABLE EXPENSE, HAD JOHN SENEX MAKE UP THIS COMPOSITE MAP. THE MAP SUPPORTED THE GEOGRAPHY IN THE ONE THAT BALTIMORE HAD USED IN THE ARTICLES OF AGREEMENT OF 1732, THEN LATER REPUDIATED, SINCE IT ESTABLISHED CAPE HENLOPEN SOME 20-25 MILES SOUTH OF A NON-EXISTENT CAPE CORNELIUS, WHICH HAD BEEN PRESENT ON THE VISSCHER MAP. THAT EARLIER MAP WAS ALSO DONE BY JOHN SENEX.

PARIS HAD THE ARTICLES OF AGREEMENT OF 1732 REPRINTED. LAID IN MOST OF THE COPIES WERE THE UNTITLED "LORD BALTIMORE'S OWN PLAN" MAP OF 1732 AND IN SOME COPIES THIS SMITH-COMPOSITE MAP AS WELL. THIS PAMPHLET WAS USED IN THE LEGAL FIGHT BETWEEN THE PENNS AND BALTIMORE IN LONDON. VERNER IN HIS UNPUBLISHED NOTES ON THE MAPS OF VIRGINIA INDICATES THAT THIS FIRST STATE IS RARE. HE WAS ONLY ABLE TO LOCATE A SINGLE COPY IN HIS RESEARCH.

A REUSE OF THE COMPOSITE MAP BY CAPT. FAYR HALL WAS PERMITTED BY PARIS, AND IT APPEARED LATER IN 1735 IN HIS LONDON PAMPHLET TITLED A SHORT ACCOUNT OF THE FIRST SETTLEMENT OF THE PROVINCES OF VIRGINIA, MARYLAND, NEW-YORK, NEW JERSEY, AND PENNSLVANIA BY THE ENGLISH.... THE COPIES USED IN THAT ISSUE ARE IDENTIFIED BY THE ADDITION OF EXPLANATORY COMMENT ALONG THE 39TH AND 40TH PARALLELS OF THE MAP IN WHICH HE ADVOCATED SUCH EXTRAVAGANT LAND CLAIMS IN FAVOR OF THE PENNS THAT THEY WERE DISPLEASED. THE MAP PUTS THE SOUTHERN BOUNDARY OF PENNSYLVANIA WELL BELOW PRESENT DAY WASHINGTON D.C.!!

THE HUNTINGFIELD COLLECTION HAS A MANUSCRIPT MAP WITH WRITING BY JOHN FERNANDO PARIS THAT WAS ALSO USED IN THE COURT CASE (SEE MAP # 23_A5). THIS MANUSCRIPT MAP MAY HAVE BEEN DONE TO ADJUST THE TERRITORY CLAIMED BY THE SECOND STATE OF THE SENEX MAP BY PENNSYLVANIA TO MORE REASONABLE PROPORTIONS.

DATA IS FROM NICOLAS WAINWRIGHT'S "TALE OF A RUNAWAY CAPE:THE PENN-BALTIMORE AGREEMENT OF 1732", PHILLIPS MAPS, PHILLIPS VIRGINIA CARTOGRAPHY, E.B. MATHEWS, VERNER'S NOTES, THE CRISTIE'S CATALOG FOR SALE # 5152, AND FROM OBSERVATION OF THE HUNTINGFIELD COLLECTION HOLDINGS.

EDITION & STATE INFO : THIS MAP IS KNOWN IN A SINGLE EDITION IN TWO STATES, BOTH ISSUED IN 1735.

STATE 1 - (1735) - THIS IS THE MAP AS DESCRIBED HEREIN. IT WAS INCLUDED IN SOME COPIES OF THE REPRINT OF THE ARTICLES OF AGREEMENT OF 1732 AS AN ATTACHMENT, ALONG WITH THE UNTITLED MAP "LORD BALTIMORE'S OWN PLAN" (SEE MAP # 232S5). THE SMITH COMPOSITE MAP IN THIS STATE CAN BE RECOGNIZED BY THE MANUSCRIPT WRITING ON THE REVERSE SIDE AND BY THE WAY THE MAP IS FOLDED FOR IT TO FIT INTO THE ARTICLES. THIS STATE IS VERY RARE.

STATE 2 - (1735) - THIS MAP WAS INCLUDED BY CAPT. FAYR HALL IN HIS PAMPHLET TITLED A SHORT ACCOUNT OF THE FIRST SETTLEMENT OF THE PROVINCES OF VIRGINIA, MARYLAND, NEW-YORK, NEW JERSEY, AND PENNSYLVANIA BY THE ENGLISH... IN 1735. THE COPIES USED IN THIS ISSUE OF THE MAP ARE IDENTIFIED BY THE ADDITION OF 2 PRINTED LINES ALONG THE 39oN LAT. READING "THE TRUE BOUNDS OF PENSILVANIA ON THE SOUTH ACCORDING TO THE CHARTER./ THE TRUE BOUNDS OF MARYLAND ON THE NORTH ACCORDING TO THE CHARTER." AND OF TWO PRINTED LINES ALONG THE 40o N LAT. READING "HITHERTO LORD BALTIMORE CLAIMS, ALTHOUGH ALL TO THE NORTHWARD OF/ THE 39TH DEGREE IS EXPRESSLY WITHOUT HIS GRANT AND WITHIN Mr. PENNS." IN ADDITION, THE LETTERS A-G,I,P-T,V & W HAVE BEEN ADDED TO THE DOTTED LINES, WHICH ALSO APPEARED IN STATE 1. WRITER HAS NOT REVIEWED THE HALL PAMPHLET, BUT PRESUMABLY THE TEXT REFERS TO THE CODED POINTS TO PRESS AND EXPLAIN THE PENN CLAIMS. SEE MAP # 235S6.

DATA IS FROM WAINWRIGHT'S ARTICLE, STEVENS AND TREE IN MCS #39, VERNER'S NOTES, AND FROM COMPARISON OF THE TWO STATES IN THE HUNTINGFIELD COLLECTION.

HFC OWNERSHIP DATA : THE HUNTINGFIELD COLLECTION HAS A BLACK AND WHITE COPY OF THIS RARE FIRST STATE WHICH HAS A TEAR ALONG THE CENTERFOLD, THAT HAS BEEN NEATLY REPAIRED, WITH SOME MINOR LOSS OF TEXT. THERE IS A SLIGHT DISCOLORATION ALONG THE FOLDS. THE MAP HAS BEEN DEACIDIFIED AND STRENGTHENED ALONG THE FOLDS IN THE BACK. IT HAS AN ACQ. # OF A-CR018-HDET AND A MDHR # OF G1399-123. THE COLLECTION ALSO HAS A FULL SIZE REPRODUCTION OF THE LIBRARY OF CONGRESS COPY OF STATE 2 WITH A MDHR # OF G1399- 762(REPRO).
