DESCRIPTION : THIS IS THE KEY MAP IN A SINGLE SHEET TO HENRY POPPLE'S ATLAS A MAP OF THE BRITISH EMPIRE IN AMERICA..., LONDON, 1733, IN 20 SHEETS. IT CONTAINS REFERENCE NUMBERS LOCATING VARIOUS PLACES IN SPECIFIC MAP SHEET NUMBERS. IT COVERS THE AREA FROM NORTHERN SOUTH AMERICA TO HUDSON'S BAY AND FROM NEWFOUNDLAND TO PRESENT DAY TEXAS. CUMMING INDICATES THAT POPPLE RELIED ON BARNWELL'S MAP OF CA. 1722 FOR THE SOUTHEAST AND DELISLE'S MAP OF 1718 FOR THE MISSISSIPPI AND GREAT LAKES. THE REPRESENTATION OF THE DELMARVA PENINSULA SHOWS AN EASTERN BULGE IN THE SOUTHERN PART, WHICH WAS LATER FOLLOWED BY BOWEN IN 1747 AND BY OTHERS.

THE MAP INDICATES THAT IT WAS UNDERTAKEN WITH "THE APPROBATION OF THE RIGHT HONOURABLE THE LORDS COMMISSIONERS OF TRADE AND PLANTATIONS; AND GREAT CARE HAS BEEN TAKEN BY COMPARING ALL THE MAPS, CHARTS, AND OBSERVATIONS THAT COULD BE FOUND, ESPECIALLY THE AUTHENTICK RECORDS & ACTUAL SURVEYS TRANSMITTED TO THEIR LORDSHIPS BY THE GOVERNORS OF THE BRITISH PLANTATIONS AND OTHERS, TO CORRECT THE MANY ERRORS COMMITTED IN FORMER MAPS." HOWEVER, IT IS KNOWN THAT THERE WERE FEW OFFICIAL COLONY MAPS OF ACCURACY DONE BY THE PROPRIETORS OF THE COLONIES UNTIL ALMOST 20 YEARS FROM THE PUBLICATION OF POPPLE'S MAP. LOWERY NOTES A REVIEW BY THE FRENCH COMMISSARIES IN 1755 QUESTIONING WHETHER POPPLE'S MAP WAS EVER APPROVED BY THE BOARD OF TRADE AND QUESTIONING ITS ACCURACY.

JUSTIN WINDSOR STATES THAT THE MANUSCRIPT DRAFT OF THIS MAP DATED 1727 IS LOCATED IN THE BRITISH MUSEUM, MANUSCRIPT NO. 23,615 (FOLIO 72).

DATA IS PRIMARILY FROM CUMMING AND LOWERY.

EDITION & STATE INFO : CUMMING AND LOWERY BOTH IDENTIFY 3 STATES OF THIS MAP. THE ONE DESCRIBED HEREIN IS BELIEVED TO BE THE FIRST STATE. A SECOND STATE HAS NOTHING AT THE BOTTOM LEFT MARGIN. A THIRD HAS THE INSCRIPTION "SOLD AT STEPHEN AUSTEN'S BOOK SELLER IN NEWGATE STREET AND BY THOs. WILLDEY AT THE GREAT TOY SHOT IN St. PAULS CHURCH YARD LONDON. PRICE 2 SHILLINGS." IN THE BOTTOM LEFT MARGIN.

HFC OWNERSHIP DATA : THE HUNTINGFIELD COLLECTION HAS A BEAUTIFUL COLORED COPY OF THIS KEY MAP AS A PART OF A BOUND ATLAS CONTAINING THE KEY MAP AND 20 DETAILED SHEETS. THE ATLAS IS IN THE ORIGINAL BOARDS. IT HAS AN ACQ. # OF HS022-EG2Q* AND A MDHR # OF G1399-259.
