DESCRIPTION : THIS IS THE SECOND STATE OF THE MONTANUS-OGILBY MAP "NOVA VIRGINAE TABULA" WITH ALL THE ORIGINAL CARTOUCHE DELETED AND REPLACED BY A SINGLE CARTOUCHE. NEW SCALES, LONGITUDE FIGURES AND 3 NEW NAMES IN EASTERN MARYLAND HAVE BEEN ADDED. VERNER DESCRIBES THE EARLIER STATE AS THE EIGHTH DERIVATIVE OF THE 1612 JOHN SMITH MAP (SEE MAP # 112S5). THE PLATE WAS PREPARED BY J. MEURS FOR THE 1671 DUTCH EDITION OF A. MONTANUS'S "DE NIEUWE EN ONBEKENDE WEERELD... T'AMSTERDAM, J. MEURS, 1671" AND IS A CAREFUL COPY OF THE HONDIUS-BLEAU DERIVATIVE OF THE SMITH MAP (SEE MAP # 118H5) BUT IS SOMEWHAT SMALLER IN SIZE AND MORE DECORATIVE. JOHN OGILBY USED THE MONTANUS PLATE, UNALTERED, IN HIS 1671 WORK AMERICA. THE PLATE WAS THEN USED IN 1673 IN THE HIGH GERMAN EDITION OF MONTANUS, WHICH IS ATTRIBUTED TO OLFERT DAPPER. LATER THE PLATE WAS ACQUIRED BY PIERRE VANDER AA, WHO SO THOROUGHLY ALTERED IT THAT IT WAS NOT RECOGNIZABLE AS THE MEURS PLATE. IT WAS INCLUDED IN THE MONUMENTAL WORK LA GALERIE AGREABLE DU MONDE... BY PIERRE VANDER AA IN LEIDEN IN 1729 AS MAP # 1 IN VOLUME 64 OF 66. THE WORK CONTAINED OVER 3000 PLATES AND MAPS. AA STATES IN THE PREFACE, ACCORDING TO PHILLIPS, THAT NEARLY ALL THE PLATES HAD BEEN PURCHASED FROM VARIOUS DUTCH PUBLISHERS. THE AA PLATE SUBSEQUENTLY PASSED TO COVENS AND MORTIER, WHO ADDED THEIR IMPRINT AFTER DELETING PART OF THE AA IMPRINT.

PIETER VAN DER AA WAS BORN IN LEIDEN IN 1659, BECAME APPRENTICED TO THE BOOKSELLERS TRADE AT AGE 9 AND DIED IN 1733. MANY OF HIS ATLASES WERE MADE TO ORDER FROM OUTDATED PLATES ACQUIRED FROM MANY OF THE OLDER WELL-KNOWN CARTOGRAPHERS. HIS WORK LACKS ORIGINALITY AND OFTEN IS BADLY DEFORMED AS A RESULT OF INADEQUATE MAP PROJECTION. CARTOGRAPHICALLY, AA'S MAPS ARE OF LITTLE INTEREST.

DATA IS FROM KOEMAN, ATLANTES NEERLANDICI, VERNER, MCS #45 AND HIS UNPUBLISHED NOTES ON THE MAPS OF VIRGINIA, FROM PHILLIPS, ATLASES, AND FROM OBSERVATION OF THE THREE STATES IN THE HUNTINGFIELD COLLECTION.

EDITION & STATE INFO : THERE IS ONE EDITION, WHICH WAS ISSUED IN THREE STATES. THE FIRST IS BY MONTANUS AND OGILBY FROM 1671-1673, THE SECOND IS BY AA IN 1729 AND THE THIRD IS BY COVENS AND MORTIER IN 1761.

1ST STATE - (1671-1673) - THREE IMPRESSIONS ARE KNOWN, WITH NO PLATE CHANGES. THE WATERMARK ON THE MONTANUS 1671 (IMPRESSION 1) AND 1673 (IMPRESSION 3) PRINTINGS IS A JESTER. THE MARK ON THE OGILBY 1671 (IMPRESSION 2) PRINTING IS A COCKATRICE. NOT ALL PRINTINGS CARRY THESE MARKS. THE HUNTINGFIELD COLLECTION'S COPY HAS NO WATERMARK. COPIES OF ALL THREE IMPRESSIONS ARE IN THE NYPL. IMPRESSION 1 IS ALSO IN THE NEWBERRY AND # 2 IS IN THE JCB AND HARVARD. SEE MAP # 171M5.

2ND STATE - (1729) - ALL OF THE ORIGINAL CARTOUCHES, SCALE TITLE, AND NOTARUM ARE REPLACED BY A SINGLE CARTOUCHE. A NEW SCALE OF GERMAN AND FRENCH LEAGUES IS PROVIDED. LONGITUDE FIGURES ARE ADDED. THREE NEW NAMES IN EASTERN MARYLAND AND SOME OTHER NAMES HAVE BEEN ADDED. THE TITLE IN THE CARTOUCHE IS AS SHOWN IN THE TITLE DATA. THIS MAP APPEARED IN LA GALERIE AGREABLE DU MONDE..., A'LEIDE, PIERRE VANDER AA, 1729, VOL 64. THESE MAPS ARE ON UNWATERMARKED PAPER. COPIES ARE IN THE L.C., NEWBERRY, YALE, HARVARD AND THE NYPL. THIS IS THE MAP DESCRIBED HEREIN.

3RD STATE - (1761) - THE ONLY CHANGE FROM THE SECOND STATE IS THAT THE AA IMPRINT HAS BEEN DELETED IN PART AND REPLACED WITH THE FOLLOWING: "A AMSTERDAM CHEZ I COVENS ET C MORTIER." A COPY IS IN THE LIBRARY OF CONGRESS. SEE MAP # 261A5.

DATA IS FROM VERNER, MCS # 45, PP. 36-7.

HFC OWNERSHIP DATA : THE HUNTINGFIELD COLLECTION HAS A COPY IN OUTLINE COLORING OF STATE 1 WITH NO WATERMARK, SO POSITIVE IDENTIFICATION IS IMPOSSIBLE. IT HAS AN ACQ. # OF BB023-UNN AND A MDHR # OF G1399-229. THE COLLECTION ALSO HAS A COPY OF STATE 2 DESCRIBED HEREIN IN FULL COLOR WITH WIDE MARGINS. IT HAS AN ACQ. # OF SW0150-THN AND A MDHR # OF G1399-549. FINALLY, IT HAS A COPY IN OUTLINE COLORING WITH EXTREMELY WIDE MARGINS OF STATE 3, WITH AN ACQ. # OF BB023-HEN AND A MDHR # OF G1399-246.
